How to Plan a Tesla Model 3 Road Trip Around Charging Stops

Use the Model 3’s Trip Planner as your primary charging plan, then verify estimates and live station information as the trip unfolds.

For a long drive, enter your destination on the Model 3 touchscreen and use Trip Planner as the main charging plan. It can add Supercharger stops when needed, recommend how long to charge, and update estimates as the drive and charging session unfold. Treat those figures as guidance, not a promise: station availability, weather, speed, elevation, battery temperature, and other conditions can change the trip.

Build the route in the Model 3

  1. Enter your destination. Use the vehicle touchscreen’s navigation to set the final destination. Check that Trip Planner is enabled in navigation settings if the option is available in your vehicle and region. Tesla says the planner can calculate a route with Supercharger stops as needed. See the Model 3 Owner’s Manual for your local edition and current menu details.
  2. Review the proposed charging stops. The turn-by-turn directions can show the charging locations, recommended charging duration, and estimated energy on arrival. Check these details before setting off, then follow the in-car route to the charging site.
  3. Navigate to the site entrance. Tesla says navigation routes to a charging property’s entrance; once there, use the map and station details to locate the stalls. A pin on the map does not necessarily identify the exact stall entrance.
  4. Let the estimates update. The charging screen shows remaining time to the next stop or destination. Tesla says later charging-time estimates adjust to the actual charging duration at the previous stop, so a shorter or longer session can change the plan.

Tesla describes Trip Planner as selecting a route and charging times to reduce the combined time spent driving and charging. Its purpose is to help plan the whole trip, not to prescribe a fixed charge level for every stop. More on the feature is in Tesla’s Charging support.

Understand what the charging estimates mean

Arrival energy and stop duration are estimates

Use the estimated arrival energy and recommended stop duration to judge whether the route is practical, but expect them to move as real conditions differ from the planner’s assumptions. Range and charging performance can vary with vehicle configuration, battery state of charge and temperature, speed, weather, elevation, and charger type. Tesla lists these factors on its Navigation Features page.

Why the planner may not charge the car to 100%

Charging generally slows as the battery fills. Tesla says charging to 100% typically takes significantly longer than charging to 80%; that is general guidance, not a universal target. The useful charge for a particular stop depends on the next leg, route and conditions, as well as whether charging will be available at the destination. Follow the planner’s estimate and adjust for your actual needs rather than treating 80% as a rule.

Battery preconditioning can be part of the route

When navigating to a Supercharger—and, in some regions, an eligible third-party fast charger—the car may use energy to bring the battery toward an optimal temperature for charging. Tesla says this is intended to reduce charging time. Keep the charger set as the navigation destination so the vehicle can account for it; preconditioning does not guarantee a particular charging speed when you arrive.

Check availability and handle changes on the road

Use current vehicle or app information to check station status and, where displayed, available stalls. Tesla’s in-car station information can include availability, and the vehicle may notify you of an outage or reroute you if a planned Supercharger is unavailable. Live status is only a snapshot: a stall shown as open may be occupied by the time you arrive.

Plan differently for third-party fast chargers

Third-party charger integration is regional. In the cited Model 3 manual configuration, Trip Planner does not automatically navigate to third-party stations, so a driver may need to add one manually. Do not assume that behavior applies to every market or software version: check the charger options shown by your car and confirm that the station is compatible with your vehicle before relying on it.

Before you leave

  • Check tire pressure. Tesla recommends checking the pressure against the Tire and Loading Information label on the center door pillar before a long road trip. A digital tire-pressure gauge is one optional way to make the check; Tesla does not require a special gauge.
  • Review the route and stops. Confirm the destination, suggested charging locations, recommended stop times, and arrival-energy estimates on the touchscreen.
  • Check the current charger information. Review station status in the vehicle or app and be prepared for it to change.
  • Know what the network figures represent. Tesla’s Navigation Features page, accessed in 2026, advertises more than 80,000 Superchargers globally and up to 200 miles of range added in 15 minutes. These are manufacturer-reported claims, not independent measurements. Tesla’s footnote bases the 15-minute figure on vehicle efficiency at a constant 65 mph and says real outcomes vary.
