Use the SUV’s navigation or an EV route planner, verify each charger’s compatibility and current status, and keep a backup option for every critical leg. Range and charging time depend on conditions, so treat app estimates as a plan to inspect, not a guarantee.
Start with your SUV and the route
Before choosing stops, confirm the SUV’s model year, usable-range information, connector types, maximum DC charging capability and whether it supports battery preconditioning. Check the owner’s manual and in-car settings; vehicle features and charging limits vary by model.
Enter the trip in the vehicle’s navigation system, an EV-specific route planner, or both. Select the exact model if the planner offers it, then review its proposed stops. Government guidance names A Better Route Planner, Google Maps and PlugShare as examples, but the Australian Government does not endorse particular apps, and app coverage and features vary by market. Australian Government guidance and the U.S. EPA’s EV guidance describe factors to check; neither establishes a universal best planner.
When comparing planners, look at whether they support your exact model, account for season or temperature and charging performance, provide current charger status, show detours and charging-time estimates, and let you inspect alternative stops. The sources do not provide a head-to-head app test, so assess the route they generate rather than relying on a general ranking.

Check every planned charging stop
For each stop, confirm that the connector matches your SUV and that the charger’s location and access suit your route. Check live availability, charging speed, price, payment or access requirements, nearby amenities and the detour involved. A charger’s advertised power is its maximum output; your SUV may not accept power at that rate. The EPA explains this distinction.
Identify another compatible charger near each important stop, especially on remote legs or busy travel dates. Long weekends and school holidays can affect charger availability, according to the Australian Government. Some public chargers require a provider app or RFID access, so prepare the payment and access methods required by the networks on your route before leaving.

Allow for real-world range, not just the rating
Published or rated range is not a promise of the distance you will cover in every situation. The Australian Government identifies long distances, varied terrain, extreme temperatures and higher speeds as conditions that can reduce EV range. Use the vehicle’s live range estimate as conditions develop, and plan with a sensible arrival margin. There is no universal numerical buffer supported for every SUV and route.
Consider the specific trip: elevation changes, expected temperatures, speed and any load or towing that affects the vehicle. If conditions worsen or the live estimate falls, reassess the next leg and use a nearer compatible charger rather than pressing on to meet the original plan.

Plan charging time around the vehicle’s limits
Cold or hot conditions can slow charging, and the power shown on a charger is not necessarily the power the SUV will receive. If the vehicle supports battery preconditioning, using its built-in navigation to route to a fast charger may prepare the battery for charging. Check the manual for the model-specific behavior and settings. EPA guidance notes these factors.
At a DC fast charger, consider stopping around 80% when that leaves enough range for the next leg. Charging commonly slows as the battery nears full, so adding charge above that point may take longer. The Australian Government also gives 80% as an en-route rule of thumb. This is a time-saving heuristic, not an absolute battery-care rule: charge higher when the route requires it and follow the vehicle maker’s guidance. Starting with a high state of charge, even 100% when practical and appropriate for the vehicle, can reduce the need for an early stop.

Charging-time estimates are not interchangeable between vehicles or sessions. As broad context—not an individual-session promise—Dong-Yeon Lee, a research engineer and lead author of an NREL report, described contemporary DC fast charging as providing “100–200+ miles of range in about 30 minutes with today’s technology.” Actual results depend on the vehicle, charging station and conditions. The National Laboratory of the Rockies article dated November 15, 2023 presents the statement in the context of road-trip charging infrastructure.
Make the itinerary practical
- Confirm the vehicle: Check model year, usable-range information, connectors, maximum DC charging capability and preconditioning support in the owner’s manual and vehicle settings.
- Map the journey: Enter the route in the SUV’s navigation and/or an EV-specific planner; select the exact model when available and inspect each suggested stop.
- Verify the stops: Check connector, charging speed, current availability, price, access and payment requirements, and nearby amenities. Note a second usable option for critical or remote legs.
- Adjust for conditions: Account for speed, terrain and expected temperatures. Monitor the live range estimate and keep a practical arrival margin rather than relying on a fixed universal buffer.
- Choose departure and en-route charge levels: Start with a high charge if practical. At fast chargers, consider around 80% when the next stop is reachable; charge higher if the journey or vehicle guidance calls for it.
- Pair charging with breaks: Plan regular rest stops and use charging time for them where appropriate. The Australian Government guide recommends planning a rest break about every two hours.
- Prepare access and equipment: Install or set up any provider apps and access methods required at planned networks, and carry only equipment compatible with the SUV and itinerary.
Pack compatible essentials
There is no universal EV road-trip kit. The Australian Government lists an adjustable charging cable, a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable for untethered chargers, a heavy-duty 15A extension lead, tire repair supplies and a phone cable. Carry these only where they suit the SUV, charger, country and manufacturer’s instructions.

A Type 2-to-Type 2 cable can be useful at compatible untethered AC chargers, but it does not replace a DC fast-charging connector and cannot make incompatible equipment safe. Confirm what the vehicle already includes and what the chargers along your route require before packing electrical equipment.
What general charging figures can—and can’t—tell you
For context, the EPA cites a U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration figure based on the 2022 National Household Travel Survey: household vehicles were driven an average of 64.6 minutes on a typical day and parked the rest of the time, or about 95% of the day. That is general household travel context, not a prediction of road-trip charging needs.
The EPA also cites the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation / DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center count of around 75,000 public charging stations across the United States as of December 2024. That dated national total does not establish whether a particular charger is working, compatible or available on your route. The EPA page provides this context.
Infrastructure projections are likewise not a personal stop plan. A 2023 NREL analysis summarized by the National Laboratory of the Rockies modeled road trips to and from parks in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and Arizona in 2030. Its projected need ranged from 1,200 to 22,000 DC fast-charging ports and 70 MW to 400 MW, depending on assumptions including EV adoption, charging behavior, station spacing and utilization, and towing. Those wide modeled ranges concern infrastructure planning, not how many stops a driver should make. The study summary describes its scope and assumptions.
