You can pay for an IONITY charging session without the app either at a contactless payment terminal, where one is installed, or through the charger’s QR-code payment website. At a separate terminal, select the charger first and connect the car only after payment is approved. IONITY’s public information reviewed here does not identify “Birdhouse” as a terminal product or model, so this guide refers to it as the contactless terminal.
Choose the payment route available at the site
IONITY installs contactless terminals at selected locations, not at every charger. If there is no terminal, use the QR code on the charger or go to payment.ionity.eu to pay ad hoc. IONITY describes these as its two ways to pay without using the app. IONITY payment options

IONITY’s pages do not establish that the two routes have identical authorization steps or customer experience. Follow the instructions shown for the route you choose.
Pay at the contactless terminal
At a terminal mounted separately from the charger
- Press Start on the terminal.
- Select the charger you intend to use.
- Present a supported card or phone to the reader and follow the terminal prompts. The terminal may request a PIN and authorizes a payment reservation.
- Wait for payment approval on the display, then connect the car to the selected charger. IONITY says the charging session starts after connection. If the live display differs from these steps, follow the terminal and charger prompts. IONITY terminal payment instructions
At a terminal attached to an individual charger
Skip charger selection: present the payment method at the attached terminal and follow its prompts. Connect the car after the terminal shows approval.

Cards and mobile wallets accepted at terminals
IONITY lists Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, and Google Pay for terminal payment. Amex is accepted at terminals only in Germany and the United Kingdom, according to IONITY’s support page. IONITY says its ad-hoc payment website supports Amex in all countries. IONITY terminal payment instructions
Pay through the QR-code website
- Scan the direct-payment QR code on the charger, or open payment.ionity.eu.
- Choose Start charging, select a payment method, and complete the payment flow.
- Connect the car and follow the charger’s prompts. IONITY’s how-to says the session starts after connection. IONITY how-to
Understand the card reservation and final charge
For terminal payments, IONITY publishes €40—or a similar amount in the selected currency—as an authorization example. The reservation checks the card and available funds; it is not necessarily the final session cost. If the final amount is lower, IONITY says the difference is released or refunded. If it is higher, the difference is additionally reserved and booked. IONITY says final billing is completed overnight and that only the actual costs incurred are charged. IONITY says an authorization release can take up to four weeks, although it is usually quicker; the bank’s processing determines the timing. The €40 figure is IONITY’s published example, not a guaranteed amount for every currency, card, or session.
Find your terminal receipt
IONITY says a terminal receipt is generally available within 24 hours. Scan the QR code on the terminal receipt or visit receipts.ionity.eu. The portal requests the country, charge date, payment method, and last four digits of the card. For Apple Pay or Google Pay, enter the last four digits of the virtual card. Terminal sessions are billed at the standard IONITY DIRECT price. The terminal does not support PASSPORT tariffs; IONITY directs PASSPORT customers to use the IONITY app. Check the current price for your location before charging, since prices can vary by geography and change over time.
