You can patch a small puncture in a conventional bicycle inner tube if the tube and valve are otherwise in good condition. Find and mark the leak, remove whatever caused it, prepare the tube according to the patch kit’s instructions, and check the repair before riding. This guide covers traditional tire-and-tube setups; tubeless tires require a different repair method, as Park Tool explains.
What you need
- A bicycle inner-tube patch kit. A vulcanizing kit such as the Park Tool VP-1C is one example; follow the directions for the specific kit you use.
- Tire levers and a pump.
- A marker, clean towel, and—if the leak is hard to find—a container of water.
- A correctly sized spare tube if the damage cannot be repaired or you need to get back on the road quickly.
How to patch a conventional bicycle inner tube
1. Remove the wheel, tire, and tube
Remove the wheel and take the tire and tube off using the procedure appropriate for your bicycle. Keep track of the tube’s orientation relative to the tire and wheel; that can help you locate the puncture’s cause later.
2. Find and mark the leak
Add a little air to the tube and slowly rotate it while listening for a hiss. If you cannot hear the leak, submerge the tube and look for bubbles. Dry the tube, then mark the hole. A small amount of air can make a leak easier to find, but do not inflate the loose tube beyond what is safe for it.
3. Check whether the tube is repairable
A small puncture may be suitable for patching if the rest of the tube and its valve are serviceable. Replace the tube if the damage is extensive, the valve is damaged, or a patch will not hold. If you are on a ride, a spare tube can be the dependable way to get moving again; choose one that matches the size marked on the tire sidewall or specified in the bicycle owner’s manual.

4. Find and remove the cause
Before putting the tube back, carefully inspect the tire’s outside and inside for a thorn, glass, or a cut. Also check the rim strip and look for protruding spoke ends. Remove any debris that could puncture the repaired tube—or a replacement.
5. Prepare the patch area
Deflate the tube, clean the area around the hole, and let it dry completely. If your kit calls for roughening, lightly buff the area with its sandpaper or scuffer; too much sanding can groove or thin the tube. Park Tool says a clean rag and alcohol or another residue-free solvent can help remove residue, but the surface must be dry before patching.

6. Apply the patch
For a conventional vulcanizing patch, spread a thin layer of vulcanizing fluid over an area slightly larger than the patch and let it dry as directed by the kit. Center the patch over the hole and press it firmly, paying particular attention to the edges. Park Tool’s VP-1 instructions likewise direct users to lightly buff the area, apply a thin layer of glue larger than the patch, allow it to dry, then center and press the patch onto the tube.
Pre-glued patches are quicker to apply, but Park Tool describes them as temporary trailside fixes and advises replacing the tube when possible. Do not inflate a newly patched bare tube outside the tire to test a pre-glued patch: Park Tool warns that stretching the tube this way can weaken the bond. Patch products differ, so use the instructions supplied with your kit.

7. Refit the tube and check the repair
Allow the patch to set for the time specified by the kit. Put the tube back in the tire, reinstall the tire and wheel, and inflate to the pressure recommended on the tire. REI advises waiting several minutes after applying a glued patch, then adding only some air for a check rather than fully inflating before the glue has cured. Inspect that the tire is seated correctly before riding.
Special instructions for Aerothan TPU tubes
Do not assume conventional butyl-tube preparation applies to every tube material. Schwalbe says its Aerothan TPU tubes can be repaired with Schwalbe glueless patches; roughening is unnecessary, and the surface should be as clean as possible. For holes or cuts up to 4 mm, Schwalbe recommends two overlapping patches and says cleaning alcohol can help adhesion. It does not recommend puncture sprays for TPU tubes. These instructions are specific to Aerothan; check the tube and repair-product maker’s guidance for other materials. See Schwalbe’s Aerothan FAQ.

When to patch and when to replace
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Small puncture; tube and valve otherwise serviceable | Patch it, following the kit instructions. |
| Extensive damage, damaged valve, or patch that does not hold | Replace the tube. |
| Need a dependable field repair | Use a correctly sized spare tube if available; match it to the tire sidewall or owner’s manual. |
A vulcanizing patch takes more preparation than a pre-glued patch, but Park Tool describes a properly installed vulcanizing repair as more durable; it characterizes pre-glued patches as temporary. Whatever method you use, inspect the tire and rim area before reinstalling the tube so the original cause does not puncture it again.
