Unlock with a phone key, key card, key fob, or Tesla app, then use the model-specific handle or button. With no low-voltage power, use the manual release only when necessary—never while moving—and call Tesla Roadside Assistance if access fails.
The most important distinction is between normal powered access and a no-power emergency release. Model 3 and Model Y have flush handles, Model S has retractable handles, Model X has powered front and Falcon Wing doors, and Cybertruck has pillar-mounted exterior release buttons.

Key takeaways
- Tesla door-opening procedures are model- and generation-specific, so a Model 3 instruction should not be applied to a Model X, Cybertruck, or older Model S.
- Model 3 and Model Y use a flush exterior handle: press the wide section inward, then pull the handle.
- Model S uses a retractable exterior handle: press it lightly to extend it, insert your hand, and pull.
- Model X has powered front doors and Falcon Wing rear doors, while Cybertruck uses exterior release buttons on the door pillars.
- Current Tesla interiors generally use a powered button near the top of the interior handle; manual releases are for no-power or otherwise necessary situations.
- Tesla warns, “Do not use the manual door release while the vehicle is moving.”
Which Tesla door-opening method applies to your model?
The correct Tesla door-opening method depends on the model, model year, door type, and whether the vehicle has low-voltage electrical power. The comparison below is a quick reference; use the exact manual for the vehicle before attempting a no-power rear-door procedure.
| Tesla model | Normal outside entry | Normal inside opening | Front door with no power | Rear door with no power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Model 3 | Unlock the car, press the wide section of the flush handle inward, then pull. | Press the button at the top of the interior handle and push the door. | Pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. | The documented 2017–2023 guide says only the front doors have a manual release; verify the exact vehicle manual before giving rear-door advice. |
| Model Y | Unlock the car, press the wide section of the flush handle inward, then pull. A key card can be tapped at the driver-side pillar. | Press the button at the top of the interior handle and push the door. | Pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. | Depending on version and equipment, remove the cover at the bottom of the rear-door pocket and pull the mechanical cable forward. |
| Model S | Lightly press the retractable handle to extend it, insert your hand, and pull. | Press the button at the top of the interior handle and push the door. | On current vehicles, pull up the release in front of the window switches. Older vehicles may open normally with the interior handle. | Access the mechanical cable below or behind the rear-seat carpet; the exact location varies by generation. |
| Model X | Press the powered front-door handle. Operate Falcon Wing doors with their exterior handle, key fob, pillar switch, or touchscreen as applicable. | Press the interior door button. Falcon Wing doors also have pillar and touchscreen controls. | Pull up the release in front of the window switches. | Carefully remove the Falcon Wing speaker grille, pull the mechanical release cable down and toward the front, then manually lift the door. |
| Cybertruck | Press the exterior door-release button on the pillar to the right of the door, then pull the door from its top edge. | Press the interior door-open button at the top of the handle and push the door. | Pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. | Remove the rubber mat at the bottom of the rear-door map pocket, pull the mechanical cable forward, and push the door open. |
Tesla maintains an official owner-manual index because door controls and emergency procedures differ across models and generations.

How do you open a Tesla door from the outside?
First unlock the Tesla with an authenticated phone key, key card, key fob, or the Tesla app when supported. After the locks release, use the model-specific exterior handle or button; the opening motion is not the same on every Tesla.
How do you open a Tesla Model 3 door from outside?
After the Model 3 is unlocked, press the wide part of the flush exterior handle inward. Keep pressure on the wide section, pull the handle outward, and open the door. Tesla documents this press-in-then-pull motion in the 2017–2023 Model 3 emergency-response guide.
Do not pull the narrow end of the Model 3 handle as if it were a conventional door handle. If the phone key is unavailable, use a paired key card or supported key fob instead of forcing the handle.

How do you open a Tesla Model Y door from outside?
Model Y uses the same basic flush-handle movement as Model 3. Unlock the Model Y, press the wide section of the exterior handle inward, and pull the handle to open the door.
For Model 3 and Model Y key cards, tap the paired card at the reader on the driver-side door pillar to lock or unlock the vehicle. A key card must be paired and compatible with the specific vehicle; do not assume that an unpaired or third-party card will work.
How do you open a Tesla Model S door from outside?
Lightly press the Model S exterior handle. The handle extends outward; insert your hand behind it and pull the door open. Tesla says Model S handles can be configured to present automatically when the vehicle detects a phone key or key fob. The current Model S door instructions cover the handle and interior-release operation.
How do you open a Tesla Model X door from outside?
Model X front doors are electrically powered. When the vehicle detects an authorized key, press the exterior front-door handle and the door opens under power.
Falcon Wing rear doors can be operated with their exterior handles, a supported key fob, the driver-side pillar switch, or the touchscreen, depending on the situation and vehicle settings. Check for people, overhead clearance, and other obstacles before allowing a powered Falcon Wing door to move. The Model X owner manual describes the powered-door controls and no-power procedure.
How do you open a Cybertruck door from outside?
With a phone key, Cybertruck doors unlock as the authorized user approaches. Press the exterior door-release button on the pillar to the right of the door, then pull the door open from the top edge.
A Cybertruck does not automatically lock or unlock when approached with only a key card. If you use a key card, manually lock or unlock the vehicle according to Tesla’s Cybertruck door instructions.

Model X front doors use an interior door button. Falcon Wing rear doors can also be opened with the interior pillar switch or touchscreen controls. Keep hands, fingers, children, and objects away from powered door edges and moving mechanisms while a Model X or Cybertruck door operates.
Why will a Tesla rear door not open from the inside?
The most common model-specific reason documented in the supplied Tesla guidance is active child lock: when child lock is enabled, a rear door may not open from its interior button. Check the vehicle’s child-lock control on the touchscreen for supported models, then use the exterior control or an adult-controlled release if appropriate.
If the Tesla has no low-voltage power, the powered interior button may not function. Use the correct manual release for the model and generation only when the vehicle is stationary and the situation requires it.
How do you open a Tesla door with no power?
When a Tesla has no low-voltage electrical power, use the model-specific mechanical release rather than repeatedly pressing powered controls. Manual releases are usually located inside the vehicle, and rear-door equipment varies substantially by model and generation.

Pull up the manual door release in front of the window switches to open a Model 3 front door. Tesla’s documented 2017–2023 Model 3 emergency-response guide says only the front doors have a manual release, so do not assume that a rear-door cable exists on every Model 3. Check the exact vehicle documentation before attempting any rear-door procedure.
How do you open a Model Y door with no power?
For a Model Y front door, pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. For a Model Y rear door, the documented procedure uses an access point at the bottom of the rear-door pocket: remove the cover and pull the mechanical release cable forward.
Tesla notes that rear manual-release equipment is not identical on every Model Y. Do not remove trim or pull an unidentified cable unless the exact manual for that Model Y confirms the location and method. Tesla’s Model Y no-power instructions should take priority over a generic video or older procedure.
How do you open a Model S door with no power?
On current Model S vehicles, pull up the manual release in front of the window switches for a front door. For the rear doors, the mechanical cable is below or behind the rear-seat carpet, with access varying by generation.
Older 2012–2020 Model S instructions say the front doors open as usual with the interior door handles when electrical power is unavailable. The rear mechanical cable is exposed by folding back the carpet below the rear seats. Use the 2012–2020 Model S no-power manual for that generation rather than applying current-vehicle instructions.

How do you open a Model X Falcon Wing door with no power?
For a Model X front door, pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. For a Falcon Wing rear door, carefully remove the speaker grille, pull the mechanical release cable down and toward the front, and manually lift the door after the latch releases.
Falcon Wing doors are heavy, powered mechanisms with moving edges. Tesla’s Model X owner manual should be consulted before removing the grille or attempting a no-power opening.
How do you open a Cybertruck door with no power?
For a Cybertruck front door, pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. For a rear door, remove the rubber mat at the bottom of the rear-door map pocket, pull the mechanical release cable forward, and push the door open.

What should you never do when opening a Tesla door?
Never use a Tesla manual door release while the vehicle is moving. Tesla’s exact safety warning is: "Do not use the manual door release while the vehicle is moving."
When the Tesla has electrical power, use the normal powered interior button instead of the mechanical release. During a no-power opening, the window may not drop automatically, and opening the door without the expected window movement can damage the glass or surrounding trim.
Keep hands, fingers, children, and loose objects clear of powered Model X Falcon Wing doors and Cybertruck door mechanisms. Model X doors may stop when they detect an obstacle, but obstacle detection does not remove the need to watch the entire door movement.

After a collision, electrical and mechanical releases may be damaged or obstructed. If an occupant is trapped, treat the event as an emergency rather than a routine lockout. Tesla’s roadside guidance says, "If you’re ever in an unsafe location, contact emergency services." Read the Tesla Roadside Assistance guidance and contact emergency services immediately when the location is unsafe.

If a Tesla phone key fails, use a paired physical key card or supported key fob, and escalate to Tesla Roadside Assistance if no authorized key opens the vehicle. A dead phone, unavailable Bluetooth connection, or poor cellular connectivity can prevent phone-based access, so carrying a physical backup is worthwhile.
- Try the Tesla app or phone key only if the phone is powered and available. The app can be an alternate unlock method where supported, but a dead phone cannot authenticate the vehicle.
- Use a paired key card. For Model 3 and Model Y, tap the card at the driver-side pillar to lock or unlock. After entering, Tesla’s instructions place the card behind the cup holders on the center console for authentication and starting.
- Use a supported key fob. Tesla says a passive-entry key fob can automatically lock and unlock when it is within approximately six feet. A key fob with a dead battery may still be used by placing it on the vehicle’s designated reader, but compatibility and the reader location depend on the model and year.
- Check older-model compatibility. Tesla specifically says 2012–2020 Model S and 2015–2020 Model X vehicles do not support phone key. Those owners need the physical key method specified for their vehicle.
If your phone is inaccessible, a paired Tesla key card is a practical physical backup for supported vehicles. Verify the exact model, generation, pairing process, and seller authenticity before relying on any replacement card; Tesla’s official Model 3/Y key-card guidance does not mean every generic card will work.

When should you call Tesla Roadside Assistance?
Call Tesla Roadside Assistance instead of prying open the vehicle, inserting tools, or improvising a release when the Tesla is locked, the phone and physical keys fail, or the no-power procedure is unclear. Tesla lists lockouts among its roadside services and says a Roadside Professional can create a small opening between the door and vehicle frame to open the vehicle manually.
Request assistance through the Tesla app when possible. If the Tesla is stopped in traffic, exposed to another immediate hazard, involved in a collision, or occupied by someone in danger, contact emergency services first. Do not force a Model X Falcon Wing door, remove trim without the correct manual, or treat a damaged post-collision release as a normal lockout.
A safe decision path for any Tesla
- Identify the exact vehicle. Confirm Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, or Cybertruck, and check the model year or generation.
- Determine whether the vehicle has electrical power. If power is available, use the phone key, key card, key fob, app, exterior handle, or interior powered button.
- Use the correct normal handle. Model 3 and Model Y use a flush handle, Model S uses a retractable handle, Model X uses powered door controls, and Cybertruck uses pillar release buttons.
- If there is no low-voltage power and you are inside, use the documented manual release. Follow the exact front- or rear-door procedure for that model and generation.
- If you are outside a locked Tesla with no working key, do not pry the door. Contact Tesla Roadside Assistance, or contact emergency services immediately if the location is unsafe or someone is at risk.
Tesla owner manuals and software features can change. For a safety-critical situation, verify the vehicle’s exact manual through Tesla’s owner-manual index before relying on a model-generalized instruction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you open a Tesla from outside with no power?
Usually not with the normal exterior handle. Tesla’s documented manual releases are generally inside the cabin, so an outside lockout with no working key should be handled by Tesla Roadside Assistance rather than by prying the door open. Contact emergency services first if the location is unsafe or someone is trapped.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAre Tesla Model 3 and Model Y doors opened the same way?
Model 3 and Model Y use the same basic flush-handle motion: unlock the car, press the wide part of the handle inward, and pull. Their rear-door no-power procedures are not necessarily identical, so use the exact manual for the vehicle’s model year.
Why will my Tesla rear door not open from the inside?
A Tesla rear door may not open from its interior button when child lock is active. A rear door may also lack usable electrical power or have model-specific no-power equipment, so check child-lock settings and the exact owner manual before using a mechanical release.
Is it safe to use a Tesla emergency door release?
Use a Tesla manual door release only when the vehicle is stationary and normal powered access is unavailable or another necessary situation requires it. Tesla warns never to use the manual release while the vehicle is moving, and the window may not lower automatically during a no-power opening.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Unlock the Tesla first, then use the handle or button designed for that model. Use a manual release only when the vehicle is stationary and normal powered access is unavailable; if you are locked out from outside, do not force the door—call Tesla Roadside Assistance, or emergency services if the situation is unsafe.
