A successful big-block swap needs a cooling system and fuel system sized for the actual engine, vehicle, and intended use—not just the engine’s displacement. Before buying parts, establish the engine configuration, power target, fuel and induction type, operating pressure, chassis fit, and packaging constraints. Then verify that the radiator can reject the heat, airflow can reach it, and the pump, lines, and regulator can deliver the required fuel under operating conditions.
Start with the engine and vehicle combination
“Big block” is not a complete parts specification. Two swaps with the same engine family can differ in power, fuel demand, operating pressure, cooling load, chassis layout, and available space. Record the details that determine the systems before comparing components:
- Engine family and configuration, including the intended horsepower.
- Naturally aspirated or boosted induction, and carburetor or EFI.
- Fuel type and the required operating pressure.
- Recipient chassis, intended use, and available space for radiator, fan, pump, lines, and accessories.
- Hose locations, accessory-drive arrangement, and any packaging constraints that affect fitment.
Holley’s big-block Chevy cooling information treats cooling and fuel delivery as separate supporting-system needs. Use engine- and chassis-specific documentation to confirm compatibility; neither engine category nor product category alone establishes the right component for a particular swap.
Plan cooling around heat rejection and airflow
The cooling system must carry heat away from the engine and transfer it through the radiator to the air moving across its core. Ford Racing Performance Parts states in its Engine Installation and Tuning Tips guide: “The radiator must have enough area to dissipate the heat being generated by the engine.” The guide gives no universal radiator dimensions, and the available manufacturer guidance does not establish a single radiator or fan specification for every big-block swap.

Check radiator fit and airflow
- Confirm the radiator fits the chassis and has adequate area for the engine’s heat load.
- Check the full airflow path through the grille and radiator, including how air exits the engine compartment.
- Verify fan and shroud clearance, including room for engine movement and nearby components.
- Check hose locations and routing against the engine and radiator ports.
- Account for ancillary coolers and other parts that may occupy or obstruct the airflow path.
A radiator’s thickness or a fan’s advertised capacity is not, by itself, proof that the installed package will control temperature. Fit, airflow, shroud arrangement, and the vehicle’s use all matter.
Match the pump and accessory drive
Choose a water pump that is compatible with the engine and the planned accessory drive. Check mounting, pulley alignment, rotation requirements, hose routing, and clearance in the vehicle. Holley lists performance radiators and water pumps among big-block cooling products, but the cited material does not rank pump styles or establish one flow rating as universally best. Confirm the selected parts against the engine and chassis instructions rather than assuming a pump will fit because it is intended for a big block.

Size fuel delivery for demand at working pressure
Begin with the power target, fuel, induction type, and operating pressure. Estimate the fuel flow required by that actual combination, then select a pump using its flow at the pressure the system will run—not a headline rating at a different pressure. Holley’s AEM-authored fuel-pump sizing guide, published May 19, 2022, explains that pump flow changes with pressure and that the operating pressure must be considered when sizing.
- Set a realistic power target. Use the intended engine output and fuel, not displacement alone, to estimate demand.
- Identify the system pressure. Establish the required pressure for the carburetor or EFI setup and whether the engine is naturally aspirated or boosted.
- Read the pump curve at that pressure. Compare delivered flow at the expected working pressure with the calculated demand. A free-flow or lower-pressure rating is not an equivalent comparison.
- Account for line losses. Line size and routing affect friction and pressure available at the regulator. Confirm the regulator receives the pressure and flow the system requires.
- Check regulator and return capacity. In a return-style system, verify that the regulator and return path can handle bypass flow and maintain the intended pressure.
For scale only, the Holley guide gives an illustrative comparison at 70 PSI: about 175 LPH for a high-flow pump versus about 80 LPH for a factory pump. Those are the guide’s product examples, not universal pump specifications or a recommendation for every swap. Use the curve for the pump under consideration.

Account for boost pressure correctly
In a boosted application, the fuel system must meet the required pressure under boost. Holley’s sizing guide explains that the relevant pressure includes base pressure plus boost pressure. Do not carry over a naturally aspirated pump or injector recommendation without checking the boost-referenced regulator and injector design, and whether the pump can still supply the required flow at the resulting pressure.
Size the feed and return as a system
The feed line is not the only line that matters. Holley notes that line friction affects pressure at the regulator and warns that an undersized return can prevent accurate base-pressure setting. Choose the feed, regulator, and return together, considering routing and the pressure and flow the system must support. A pump with sufficient flow on paper cannot compensate for a restriction or a return path that cannot handle bypass fuel.

Understand what a return-style regulator does
A return-style regulator sends excess fuel back to the tank to control system pressure. Holley’s fuel-pressure regulator guide says circulation through a return-style system generally reduces fuel temperature, while also noting that the pump adds heat as fuel circulates. The regulator is therefore one part of a correctly sized system, not a guarantee that fuel temperature will be low under every condition.
Match the regulator and return arrangement to the fuel system: carbureted or EFI, naturally aspirated or boosted, and the pressure required by the application. Confirm the regulator’s operating range and return capacity against the pump’s delivery and the engine’s demand.

Verify fitment and safety before buying or installing
Use the engine and chassis documentation to confirm the selected arrangement. The manufacturer guidance cited here supports general selection principles, not a specific swap’s horsepower, cooling load, pressure, or compatibility.
- Confirm the radiator, water pump, fan, shroud, and accessory drive fit the engine and chassis together.
- Check radiator area, airflow path, hose positions, and clearance with the body and nearby components installed.
- Confirm fuel compatibility for the pump, regulator, seals, and lines.
- For an electric pump, verify the vehicle’s electrical supply is suitable for the pump.
- Route fuel lines away from exhaust heat, sharp edges, and moving parts.
- After installation, check for leaks and verify fuel pressure under the conditions the system is intended to handle.
