A homemade Flintstones car can be a costume prop built at child scale, a small wooden display model, or a brick-built collectible. The projects documented here are separate designs, not one shared set of plans: Make reports that Bill LeMaster made a costume car for his grandchildren from scrap wood, swim noodles, and Bondo glass; an independent Instructables tutorial describes a foam-and-tube costume build; and another Instructables author made a hardwood model. Choose by intended use, scale, tools, and the support and finish your project needs.
Which kind of homemade Flintstones car do you want?
| Approach | What the source describes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| LeMaster’s costume car | Make reports a build for his grandchildren’s Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Halloween costumes, using scrap wood, swim noodles, and Bondo glass. The article says it took about three weeks, mostly Saturdays, and cost about $100 at the time. Make’s 2008 account | A costume project inspired by that reported build; the article does not provide enough information to treat it as a complete plan. |
| Foam costume car | A separate Instructables tutorial lists foam insulation, cardboard cement tubes, dowels, rod or rebar, bamboo, and cloth. The author’s tutorial | A costume-scale fabrication approach for someone able to plan and construct the support and finish independently. |
| Hardwood model | Carl Jacobson describes a model about 9 inches long and 7.5 inches tall, made with maple, walnut, bocote, and leather accents. The wooden model tutorial | A small display piece for a woodworker with the necessary cutting and turning tools. |
| Official LEGO model | LEGO’s official article reports about 770 bricks, including minifigures, and about 88 hours of work by the fan designer. LEGO’s designer article | A brick-built display alternative rather than a homemade ride-on or costume-car plan. |
What the original Make project says—and does not say
Make’s 2008 story says retired Air Force technician Bill LeMaster built the car to complete his grandchildren’s Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Halloween costumes. It names scrap wood, swim noodles, and Bondo glass as materials, and reports roughly three weeks of work, mostly Saturdays, at an approximate cost of $100 at the time. LeMaster’s quoted aim was, “I just wanted my grandkids to have the most awesome costume in Montgomery.”
Those details describe one historical project, not a current budget or a verified bill of materials. Make says LeMaster posted a how-to on Instructables, but the linked full instructions are not established here. The article also does not establish the car’s dimensions, weight, load capacity, durability, or safety for a child to ride in. Do not assume the foam tutorial’s materials or construction details belong to LeMaster’s car.

The author notes that additional screws, washers, and clamps are not included in the materials list. The listed items are not a substitute for deciding how the specific prop will be supported, joined, finished, and used. Check that the chosen finish and adhesives suit the foam and other materials before assembly; the tutorial’s material list alone does not establish compatibility or structural performance.
Materials and tools for the small wooden model
Carl Jacobson’s separate model tutorial describes a piece about 9 inches long and 7.5 inches tall, using maple, walnut, bocote, leather, wood glue, sandpaper, and a beeswax finish. The listed tools include a wood lathe and turning tools, a bandsaw, a spindle sander or sandpaper, a drill, a needle, and scissors. This is a display-scale woodworking project, not a substitute plan for a costume prop.

How to choose a build route
- Start with scale and use. A small hardwood model, a wearable costume prop, and a child-occupied build need different dimensions and support. Decide which one you are making before buying materials.
- Match the construction to your tools. The model tutorial calls for turning and cutting tools; the foam approach requires cutting and joining foam and planning a support structure. Choose a method you can execute with your available shop tools and skills.
- Plan joining and finish. A convincing Flintstones look depends on the body, wheels, canopy, and surface treatment reading as one design. Resolve how parts will attach and how the finish works with the chosen materials before assembly.
- Set a realistic budget and schedule. LeMaster’s approximate $100 and three-week timeline are figures from Make’s 2008 account, not a present-day estimate. Price your own materials and account for the time needed to build, finish, and revise the prop.
Important safety boundary for a ride-on prop
The cited project accounts do not provide a formal safety assessment, load rating, or child-safety certification. If a child will sit in or ride on the finished build, a competent adult should design and check it for that exact use, including support, stability, moving parts, and the intended setting. Neither the costume tutorials nor the model dimensions establish roadworthiness or safe ride-on use.
