Start by identifying the exact LS engine and the parts fitted around it. “Chevrolet LS V8” covers multiple engines and configurations, so there is no single oil specification, service interval, or parts list that can safely be applied to every lightweight British sports-car conversion. Use the documentation for the installed engine and swap components, then check that it matches the car as built.
Identify the engine and swap before servicing it
Before buying fluids or filters or setting a maintenance schedule, make an identification sheet from the engine markings, donor records, build documents and installed parts. Record what is known, and mark anything that still needs verification.
- Engine variant or RPO, model year if known, and whether it is a production or crate engine.
- Donor vehicle or the engine’s crate-engine documentation.
- Wet- or dry-sump arrangement, oil pan, oil filter and their access in the chassis.
- ECU or other controller, wiring harness and calibration.
- Intake, air filter, fuel system, cooling layout, exhaust and sensors.
- Transmission and clutch, including any installation-specific parts.
This is a practical record to help match service parts and instructions to the actual build, not a factory checklist. If the engine identity or installed configuration cannot be confirmed, do not assume a specification from another LS application fits.
What oil and filter does an LS engine take?
Use the specification for the identified engine and sump arrangement. One concrete reference is Chevrolet Performance’s 2020 LS3 EFI Crate Engine Installation Guide: for the LS3 crate-engine application it documents, the guide lists Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic oil, an AC Delco PF48 oil filter and an oil capacity of 5.5 US quarts with filter. Confirm that the installed engine and oiling arrangement match the applicable specification before using those values.

The guide identifies the LS3 as a 6.2 L (376-cubic-inch) Gen IV small-block V8 and points servicing and replacement information to a 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan LS3 RPO. That reference is specific to the guide’s LS3 application; it does not establish service parts or capacities for an LS1, LS2, LS6, LS7, truck variant, modified engine or dry-sump installation.
Chevrolet Performance also recommends a low-restriction foam or paper air filter for the LS3 covered by that guide and says to follow the engine-control system’s recommendations for intake and air-cleaner compatibility. Check those recommendations against the intake and controller actually fitted.

How often should you service an LS swap?
There is no universal interval established here for an unidentified LS swap. The available LS3 guide supplies application-specific information and crate-engine start-up guidance, but it does not set a general oil-change, spark-plug, coolant or inspection schedule for every engine and chassis combination.
- Identify the engine and installed components using the record above.
- Find the maintenance instructions that apply to that engine and confirm they match its current sump, filter, controller and other relevant parts.
- Use the applicable documentation for recurring service intervals and replacement parts; record the date, mileage and parts used for each service.
- If the conversion or engine has been modified and the documentation does not cover it, ask a qualified specialist to establish a suitable schedule for that build rather than borrowing an unverified donor-car interval.
Keep crate-engine break-in separate from routine service
Chevrolet Performance’s LS3 crate-engine guide includes initial start-up and break-in procedures, including oil and filter changes within its specified break-in sequence. Those instructions apply to the initial operation of the documented crate engine. They are not recurring service intervals for every used or swapped LS. Follow them only when they apply to the engine’s state and documentation; use the applicable maintenance schedule for later service.

Check the supporting systems as part of engine care
A reliable conversion depends on more than the long block. Chevrolet Performance’s LS3 guide discusses the required engine-control system and harness, and notes that an older-vehicle installation may need additional or modified cooling, electrical, exhaust and fuel systems. Chevrolet’s Owner Support page likewise says upgrades require appropriate engine and transmission cooling and torque capacity, fuel/air delivery, and emissions controls.
- Cooling: Verify the installed cooling arrangement against the build documentation and the engine-control system’s requirements.
- Fuel and air: Check that the fuel system, intake and air cleaner are compatible with the installed controller and engine specification. For the LS3 guide’s installation context, it states a minimum fuel-pump capacity of 45 gallons per hour at the recommended pressure and describes 58 psi constant pressure as a general EFI requirement; it directs readers to their engine-control system for the actual recommendation. Do not apply those figures to another setup without confirming compatibility.
- Electrical and control: Confirm that the controller and harness are the ones documented for the installation, and use their guidance when checking system compatibility.
- Exhaust and sensors: Check the installed arrangement against the engine and control-system documentation rather than assuming a chassis-specific setup.
- Transmission: Confirm that the transmission and clutch suit the installation. For a manual LS3 installation, the guide requires a pilot bearing in the rear of the crankshaft and warns that its fit must be verified against input-shaft length before fitting the transmission. This is an installation check, not a periodic maintenance task.
When access or clearance is specific to the car—such as around the radiator, oil pan, exhaust or steering—use the conversion’s build records or a specialist familiar with that installation. A generic LS guide cannot establish fitment for every British-derived lightweight chassis.

Check emissions and road-use rules for your location
Road legality depends on the car’s jurisdiction and configuration. Chevrolet Performance warns that its performance parts are intended for competition use and may not comply with emissions requirements where the vehicle is operated. Check the applicable local rules for the completed car; the engine’s presence in a road-going conversion does not, by itself, establish compliance.
Choose reference material that matches the job
Chevrolet Performance’s 2023 Books & Manuals catalog lists two references with different purposes: the GM LS-Series “How to Rebuild” book covers LS-Series rebuilding and modifications, while LS Swaps – How to Swap GM LS Engines Into Almost Anything covers installation subjects such as mounts, adapter plates, transmission mounts, wiring harnesses and engine management. The catalog listing establishes their scope, not current stock, price or edition availability. For routine servicing, the reference still needs to match the exact engine and installed components.
