If your car stereo has an AUX, AUX IN, or LINE IN jack, connecting a device is simple: use a compatible audio cable, plug it into the device and car, then select the auxiliary source on the stereo. An AUX cord cannot add an input to a radio that does not have one; in that case, check for a cassette deck or consider a vehicle-compatible audio interface or FM option.
Check whether your car has an AUX input
Look for a jack labeled AUX, AUX IN, or LINE IN on the stereo’s face, dashboard, glove box, or center console. The input may also be behind the radio. Its location varies by vehicle, so consult the owner’s manual if you cannot find it. SiriusXM’s AUX connection guide lists these possible locations.
Before buying a cable, check the shape and label of the input. Most AUX connections use a small 3.5 mm jack. Some vehicles instead have separate left and right RCA audio inputs. If there is no compatible input, a regular AUX cable will not create one.
What cable do you need?
- 3.5 mm AUX jack: Use a 3.5 mm male-to-male stereo cable.
- Left/right RCA inputs: Use a cable with a 3.5 mm plug for the device and RCA plugs for the car, provided the device has a compatible 3.5 mm audio output.
- Device without a 3.5 mm audio output: Identify the device’s actual audio output and get a compatible cable or adapter. Do not assume a standard AUX cord will fit.
Check both ends before connecting. An audio cable carries sound from a source; it does not supply power to a phone or other device.

Connect a device to an existing AUX jack
- Turn the stereo and device volume down. This is a cautious starting point; the exact volume settings depend on the equipment.
- Connect the cable. Plug one end into the device’s audio output and the other into the car’s AUX, AUX IN, LINE IN, or compatible RCA inputs.
- Select the auxiliary source. Turn on the stereo and choose AUX or the equivalent input. Button names and menus vary, so consult the vehicle manual if the option is not clear. SiriusXM’s connection guidance also instructs users to set the stereo to play from its auxiliary input.
- Start playback and adjust the sound. Play audio at a modest level, then raise the device and stereo volume gradually until it is comfortable.
If there is no AUX jack
Use a cassette adapter if the car has a cassette player
A cassette adapter with a 3.5 mm plug can provide a direct audio connection when the stereo has a cassette deck but no AUX input. Insert the adapter into the deck and connect its plug to the device. Select cassette playback if the stereo does not switch automatically. This option only applies to cars with a working cassette player. SiriusXM’s cassette adapter guidance describes this conditional setup.
Consider an FM transmitter
An FM transmitter sends audio to the car radio over an FM frequency. Set the transmitter and radio to an unused local frequency, as SiriusXM’s guidance recommends. Nearby stations or local interference can make a frequency difficult to use; if reception is poor, another connection method may be preferable. FM is a wireless workaround, not an AUX input.

Ask about an FM Direct Adapter, vehicle-specific interface, or replacement receiver
Some alternatives connect through the radio or vehicle wiring and depend on the car’s make, model, year, and stereo configuration. SiriusXM recommends professional installation for its FM Direct Adapter because installation requires specialized tools and expertise; that recommendation applies to this product, not necessarily every FM accessory. For radio interfaces or a replacement receiver, confirm compatibility for the exact vehicle and radio before purchasing.
When to get installation help
A cable plugged into an accessible AUX jack is a straightforward connection. Removing the radio, using a rear input, or connecting wiring is different: components and connections vary by vehicle, and a generic AUX-cord guide cannot establish which parts fit your car. Use vehicle-specific instructions or a qualified installer when compatibility is uncertain or the job requires radio removal or wiring. Do not pull the radio or connect wires based on guesswork.

SiriusXM describes direct audio connections as avoiding the possibility of interference from local FM stations and recommends AUX for its own radio setup. That is not a universal controlled comparison of every car audio system, so performance depends on the equipment and installation.
