A vehicle-history report can flag title or reported-event information; it cannot tell you whether the car is mechanically sound today. As the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) puts it, “A vehicle history report is not a substitute for an independent vehicle inspection.”
This is a general screening process, not a list of defects shared by every car from the decade. Once you have a specific make, model, engine and transmission in mind, check that car’s maintenance schedule and model-specific issues. The legal and paperwork guidance below is for U.S. buyers; rules elsewhere vary.
Before you go see the car
- Get the VIN and the seller’s account. Ask for the vehicle identification number (VIN), title status, service records, ownership history, known faults and a description of modifications. Compare the VIN on the car with the paperwork; discrepancies need to be resolved before you proceed.
- Review a vehicle-history report. For U.S. title, insurance-loss and salvage information, the FTC points consumers to providers approved by the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS). Other reports may include additional accident or repair records, but coverage varies. A report reflects available records; it does not certify present condition, and the FTC does not endorse a particular commercial provider. - Check for open safety recalls by VIN. Use the official recall lookup and check again near purchase, since recall status is specific to the vehicle and may change. Recall information does not replace a mechanical inspection. The FTC explains recall checks and vehicle-history information.
- Look up the exact car. Once you know the make, model, engine and transmission, find the applicable maintenance schedule and investigate issues specific to that version. Do not assume that a problem reported for one 2000s sports car applies to the whole decade.
- Agree on an independent inspection. Choose the mechanic yourself, ideally someone familiar with the make or type of car. Agree on an inspection at a shop or, if necessary, a mobile inspection. If a dealer refuses to let you arrange an independent inspection, the FTC advises considering another dealer. Read the FTC’s advice on buying from a dealer.
What to check during the first walk-around
Body, paint and evidence of repair
Look in daylight on reasonably level ground, preferably before the engine has been started. Compare panel gaps, paint shade and texture, bumper fit, door and trunk alignment, glass and lights. Mismatched panels or paint can justify questions and closer inspection, but appearance alone cannot establish whether the car was in a crash or how serious any repair was.
A professional may use paint-depth readings across panels to identify repainting that is not evident from the vehicle-history report. Those readings need expert interpretation and do not, by themselves, prove collision damage. The Sports.Cars inspection checklist discusses paint-depth checks and other sports-car inspection steps.

Rust, underside and structure
Do not limit the check to visible bodywork. Corrosion or damage at structural areas and underneath can matter more than cosmetic blemishes. Ask the mechanic to inspect the car on a lift, including the structure, steering, suspension, brakes, exhaust and signs of leaks. Nissan’s published certified pre-owned checklist shows examples of underbody or frame, exhaust, fluid, transmission and diagnostic inspection categories; it is an example, not a guarantee about another make or model. Tires, engine bay and fluids
- Check tires for even wear, suitable matching type and size across each axle, and their general age and condition. Uneven wear can point to an alignment or suspension concern, but needs professional assessment.
- Look in the engine bay for obvious leaks, damaged hoses or poor repairs. Appearance and fluid condition can help identify questions for the mechanic; they are not enough to diagnose a major fault.
- Have the mechanic assess any suspected leak or damage rather than relying on a seller’s explanation or a quick visual check.
How to do a cold start and road test
Start with the engine cold
Ask the seller not to start or warm the car before you arrive. Note how it starts, whether warning lamps illuminate and then behave normally, how it idles, and whether there is smoke, a leak or an unusual sound. These are screening observations, not a diagnosis; a brief puff of smoke or an isolated sound needs professional interpretation. Drive only where it is safe and legal
On a suitable route, pay attention to the car’s behavior rather than trying to provoke a fault. Check for smooth acceleration, abnormal transmission noise or grinding, and, in a manual car, obvious clutch slip or chatter. Notice whether the steering tracks and returns normally, whether ordinary braking makes the car pull or pulse, and whether the suspension clunks excessively over safe road irregularities. Check gauges, air conditioning, windows, lights and other equipment. What to request from the independent inspection
Tell the shop that you are considering a used sports car and ask what its inspection covers. A useful inspection can include a lift check, road test, diagnostic scan and a written estimate of necessary repairs. The FTC distinguishes a mechanical inspection from a safety-only check and recommends an independent mechanic even if a car is dealer-certified or offered with a warranty. Request a report that identifies the car’s make, model and VIN, with repair estimates. The FTC explains independent inspections and written reports.

Diagnostic codes and deeper engine tests
An OBD-II diagnostic code reader can retrieve trouble codes and may be a useful optional tool. A basic consumer scan is only one data point: it may not access every vehicle module or explain why a code appeared. Have a mechanic interpret codes alongside symptoms and inspection findings. Compression or leak-down testing may be appropriate when the vehicle’s condition, history or symptoms warrant it. These are not automatic requirements for every engine; ask the mechanic whether the tests make sense for this car. The Sports.Cars checklist describes them as conditional tests.

Ask the mechanic to prioritize findings
Request photographs and clear separation of urgent safety or structural concerns, immediate repairs, maintenance coming due and cosmetic issues. Ask for estimated costs. That gives you a basis to compare the car’s asking price with the likely near-term expense, negotiate, or walk away rather than treating every item on a checklist as equally serious.

For a U.S. dealer sale
Read the Buyers Guide to see whether the car is sold “as is” or with a warranty, and keep a copy. Put any verbal promises about repairs or a right to cancel in writing. Dealer disclosure rules differ in Maine and Wisconsin, which have their own versions of the Buyers Guide; private sales and transactions outside the United States follow different rules. Consult the FTC’s dealer-sale guidance.

In 2018, the FTC reported that almost half of more than 2,325 vehicles it reviewed at 94 dealerships in 20 cities had the revised Buyers Guide. That was a historical review of disclosure compliance, not a current estimate of dealer practices or vehicle condition. Read the FTC’s July 2018 account.
Compare the cost and condition, not just the asking price
If you have multiple candidates, compare them on the same factors:
- Structural integrity and rust.
- Evidence of accident repair and the quality or scope of that work.
- Service documentation.
- Engine and transmission condition.
- Deferred maintenance and estimated repair costs.
- Originality and the quality of modifications.
- Asking price plus immediate repairs.
These factors help you compare actual cars; they do not support a universal ranking of 2000s sports-car models. The right choice depends on the specific car, its condition, parts and repair needs, and your intended use.
Pause or walk away when the basics do not add up
- The seller blocks a reasonable independent inspection.
- The VIN or title information does not reconcile.
- The mechanic identifies structural damage or repairs whose scope cannot be established.
For a repair concern, ask the mechanic to explain its safety implications, likely cost and uncertainty. Whether it rules out the car depends on those consequences, parts availability, your budget and intended use—not just a checklist label.
