To improve fuel economy in a Toyota hybrid, accelerate and brake smoothly, keep highway speed reasonable, set tires to the cold pressure on the driver-side label, combine short trips when practical, reduce unnecessary cargo and accessory use, and follow the maintenance schedule for your exact model. Results vary with route, weather, traffic, speed and vehicle configuration, so compare similar trips before concluding that mileage has changed.
Drive smoothly and anticipate traffic
Press the accelerator progressively and look well ahead so you can ease off before traffic slows. Leave enough following distance to make gradual speed changes safely instead of accelerating hard and braking late. Toyota says rapid speed changes can increase highway fuel use by up to 30 percent; that is Toyota’s stated potential, not a guaranteed saving or a result that applies to every vehicle or trip. Gradual braking can also help the hybrid system recover some energy that would otherwise be lost as heat. Choose a reasonable, steady speed
High sustained speeds generally demand more energy, so avoid driving faster than necessary. On a long highway trip, cruise control may help maintain a steady pace when traffic, road and weather conditions make it safe; it is not appropriate in every situation. Let the hybrid system work as intended
A Toyota hybrid can recapture some energy while slowing and may reduce engine idling. Those features can help explain why some hybrids do well in town, but city driving does not always beat highway driving: sustained speed, traffic, temperature, hills and other conditions affect the result. Set tire pressure to the vehicle’s specification
Check the tires regularly when cold and use the pressure shown on the driver-side door label or in the owner’s manual for your particular vehicle. Do not use the maximum pressure molded on a tire’s sidewall as the vehicle’s target. Under-inflated tires can reduce fuel economy and increase tire wear. Reduce cold starts, unnecessary load and accessory use
When practical, combine several short errands into one trip. Toyota’s 2024 guide recommends linking trips to reduce engine cold starts. The guide also advises minimizing air-conditioning use; use cabin climate controls as needed for comfort and safe visibility, while recognizing that heavy air-conditioning demand can affect fuel economy.

Follow the service requirements for your exact Toyota
Use the maintenance schedule, recommended oil grade and tire specifications in the manual for your vehicle’s year and model. There is no single oil viscosity, tire pressure or service interval that applies to every Toyota hybrid. If your MPG seems lower than usual
Compare trips with similar routes, temperatures, traffic, speeds and cabin climate settings rather than judging from one short drive. Changes in weather, elevation, load, roof accessories, air-conditioning use and tire pressure can shift the displayed average without indicating a fault. EPA fuel-economy guidance
