You can work toward better fuel economy in a BMW 5 Series without switching off climate control or putting up with an uncomfortable drive. Start with smooth, anticipatory driving; use ECO PRO or Efficient mode if your car has it; keep tires at the pressure specified for your car and tire setup; and avoid running comfort features you do not need. The right settings and available features vary by model year, engine, market, equipment, software, wheels, tires, and load, so use your own car’s manual and tire placard for specifics.

Start with the changes that fit your daily drive

Fuel economy depends on the car’s configuration, the route, traffic, weather, load, and driving choices. The steps below focus on practical habits and checks rather than a promised MPG gain. BMW’s descriptions of its efficiency modes explain how the features are intended to help, but do not establish a universal improvement for every 5 Series.

  1. Drive smoothly. Accelerate progressively, look ahead for changes in traffic, and avoid unnecessary speed changes. Anticipating slowdowns can help you avoid repeated acceleration and braking.
  2. Use an efficiency mode if it suits the trip. ECO PRO or, on some newer cars, My Mode Efficient can engage available efficiency settings and coaching. Availability and behavior vary by car.
  3. Check tire pressure against your car’s specification. Read the door placard or owner’s manual for the pressure that applies to your wheel and tire setup and load.
  4. Keep up with scheduled maintenance. Follow the maintenance schedule for your specific model and market.
  5. Leave comfort and visibility equipment at the level you need. Avoid unnecessary use of high-load features, but do not compromise safe visibility or occupant comfort.

What ECO PRO and Efficient mode do

ECO PRO

BMW describes ECO PRO as a mode that supports a driving style intended to save fuel. Depending on the vehicle’s equipment, it can adjust engine control and comfort functions such as climate-control output. Equipped cars may also provide driving-style analysis and efficiency displays. BMW’s summary is that “ECO PRO supports a driving style that saves on consumption.” That is a description of the mode’s purpose, not a guarantee of a particular fuel-economy result.

My Mode Efficient

Some newer BMWs offer My Mode Efficient. BMW says it uses an Efficiency Coach to encourage fuel-efficient, anticipatory driving and manages comfort functions in an energy-saving way. Its availability depends on the car’s configuration and software; check the vehicle’s documentation or available mode settings rather than assuming your 5 Series has it.

  • Broad Compatibility for Everyday Vehicles: 0–150 PSI covers cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and spare tires (often 60 PSI). Fits standard Schrader valves; just press on for a reading.
  • Auto‑Off to Extend Battery Life: The gauge automatically powers down after 30 seconds of inactivity, so the included 2*AAA batteries last longer. Always ready for your monthly checks without surprise dead batteries.

Choosing between Comfort and an efficiency mode

Comfort and efficiency modes can suit different preferences and driving conditions. An efficiency mode may change engine control and the way some comfort functions operate; the degree of change depends on the vehicle. Comfort may be the better fit when you prefer the car’s regular response or want the climate settings you have chosen. Neither mode is universally best for every trip.

Choice What it can do When it may suit you
Comfort The cited BMW material does not specify a single Comfort-mode behavior across 5 Series generations and configurations. When you prefer your car’s regular response and comfort settings.
ECO PRO Can adjust engine control and comfort functions such as climate-control output; equipped vehicles may offer driving-style analysis and efficiency displays. When the mode’s available settings and coaching suit your route and comfort needs.
My Mode Efficient On some newer BMWs, uses an Efficiency Coach and manages comfort functions in an energy-saving way. When available on your car and you want its efficiency coaching and settings.

To try an available mode, select it using the controls described in your car’s owner’s manual or on-screen instructions. Names, menus, and functions can differ by model year and equipment. If the mode reduces climate output more than you find comfortable, use the climate settings you need or return to the mode that suits you; the aim is a sustainable routine, not tolerating discomfort.

Check tire pressure using the car’s own specification

Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, fuel consumption, and tire wear, according to BMW 5 Series manual guidance. The correct pressure is specific to the vehicle and tire setup, so do not substitute the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall for the vehicle’s recommended setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the correct pressure. Check the tire placard on the vehicle and the owner’s manual. Use the figures that match the fitted wheel and tire configuration and the vehicle’s load.
  2. Check when the tires are cold. Follow the manual’s instructions for measuring and adjusting pressure. A digital tire-pressure gauge is an optional way to take a reading; buying a gauge does not itself improve fuel economy.
  3. Adjust to the specified value and recheck. Do not intentionally overinflate to try to save fuel. If pressure repeatedly falls or tires show damage or uneven wear, have them inspected.

The available manual guidance is not a verified current specification for every 5 Series generation or market. Use the manual and placard for your own car rather than applying a pressure value from another BMW, tire, or model year.

Keep maintenance current

BMW manual guidance recommends regular maintenance to support vehicle economy and operating life. Follow the schedule and service instructions that apply to your model, engine, market, and mileage. Maintenance is sound ownership practice, but the cited guidance does not promise a particular fuel-saving amount from a service visit.

If fuel economy changes abruptly or remains unusually poor, check tire condition and pressure and review whether scheduled maintenance is due. Mileage alone does not identify a fault. If the change persists, have a qualified service professional assess the car instead of replacing parts based on an assumed diagnosis.

Keep useful comfort and safety features in use

BMW manual guidance identifies seat heating and rear-window defrosting as electrical loads, particularly in stop-and-go traffic. Switch off a feature when it is no longer needed, but use it when occupants need the heat or when defrosting is necessary for visibility. Keep climate control at a comfortable setting and use the visibility equipment required for safe driving; saving fuel is not a reason to drive cold or with obstructed windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ECO PRO may alter climate-control output on equipped vehicles, while Efficient mode on some newer BMWs manages comfort functions in an energy-saving way. The precise behavior depends on the car. If a setting is uncomfortable, adjust it or choose another mode rather than treating reduced comfort as a requirement for efficiency.

Measure your own results without overreading one trip

Use the trip-computer average as a practical way to watch for patterns. For a more useful comparison, look at similar routes and conditions: traffic, speed, weather, passengers, cargo, and comfort settings can all affect the result. A single trip is not a controlled test, and a displayed average does not prove that one mode or habit caused a change.

Try one change at a time—for example, smoother acceleration or using an available efficiency mode—while keeping the route and other conditions as comparable as practical. If the difference is not consistent, conditions may explain it. Do not expect a universal MPG or percentage gain from ECO PRO, tire-pressure checks, or maintenance; the cited BMW material does not establish one for all 5 Series cars.

What to check if fuel economy is unusually poor

  • Pressure or tire condition: Compare cold tire readings with the vehicle’s placard and inspect for visible damage or unusual wear.
  • Maintenance schedule: Check the records and the model-specific schedule to see whether routine maintenance is due.
  • Recent driving conditions: Consider whether traffic, route, load, weather, or use of comfort features changed.
  • Persistent or sudden change: Arrange a qualified inspection if the loss continues after these basic checks. Fuel-economy readings by themselves are not enough to diagnose a mechanical problem.
