For a broad comparison, Edmunds currently estimates $72,306 over five years for a selected 2026 Nissan Z configuration under standardized assumptions. That is a model-based estimate, not a personal quote or a guaranteed bill. Your own running costs depend especially on how far you drive, what you pay to insure the car, and where you have it serviced.
What does the five-year ownership estimate include?
Edmunds’ True Cost to Own estimate offers a way to see how expenses beyond the purchase price can accumulate. Its selected 2026 Nissan Z estimate divides the five-year total into the following categories:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Cost category | Edmunds estimate over five years |
|---|---|
| Depreciation | $27,595 |
| Taxes and fees | $2,473 |
| Financing | $11,484 |
| Fuel | $17,160 |
| Insurance | $5,384 |
| Repairs | $882 |
| Maintenance | $7,328 |
| Total | $72,306 |
Edmunds says the model assumes 15,000 miles driven per year, traditional financing over 60 months, 10% down, and above-average credit. The total combines operating costs with ownership costs that are easy to overlook, including depreciation, taxes and fees, and financing. It is intended for comparing vehicles, not predicting what one particular owner will spend. Edmunds provides a configuration selector, so treat these figures as applying to its selected estimate rather than assuming they describe every Z trim.

What does a 2026 Nissan Z cost to buy?
Nissan USA lists the following starting MSRPs for the 2026 U.S. lineup:
| 2026 trim | Starting MSRP |
|---|---|
| Sport | $42,970 |
| Performance | $52,970 |
| Heritage Edition | $55,910 |
| NISMO | $65,750 |
These are listed starting prices, not necessarily the price on a dealer’s final paperwork. Destination, selected options, taxes, fees, and the negotiated transaction price can change what you pay. Check the build and final quote for the specific car and model year you are considering; lineup details and pricing can change between model years.
A higher starting price can affect more than the amount financed. It can also change sales taxes, loan costs, and the amount of value at risk as the vehicle depreciates. The Edmunds total includes these categories, but its figures should not be transferred to a different trim or purchase deal without matching the configuration and assumptions.

| 2026 Z configuration | City | Highway | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sport or Performance, manual | 18 mpg | 24 mpg | 20 mpg |
| Sport or Performance, automatic | 19 mpg | 28 mpg | 22 mpg |
| NISMO, automatic | 17 mpg | 24 mpg | 19 mpg |
These are EPA estimates, not promises of the economy you will see on your routes. Traffic, driving style, trip length, road conditions, and other real-world factors affect fuel use. The automatic Sport and Performance versions have the highest combined estimate in this lineup, while the NISMO automatic has the lowest.
Estimate fuel spending with your own inputs
Use this calculation to make an annual estimate:
Annual miles ÷ expected miles per gallon × local premium price per gallon = estimated annual fuel cost
For example, enter the number of miles you expect to drive in a year, the combined EPA estimate for the exact configuration as a starting point, and the premium price per gallon where you fill up. If you have observed economy for a similar commute or driving pattern, using that instead may make the estimate more relevant. The result is only as current as your fuel-price input, and changes in mileage or local prices will change the bill.
Nissan lists a 16.4-gallon fuel tank. Capacity alone does not establish how far you can travel on a tank: actual economy, usable fuel, and driving conditions matter, so do not treat a simple tank-capacity calculation as a guaranteed range.

How much does Nissan Z insurance cost?
There is no reliable universal premium for every Z owner. Edmunds’ five-year model includes an insurance estimate, but it says its figure is based on average annual premium data for defined driver profiles and coverage assumptions; it does not use your personal information. It therefore cannot tell you what your insurer will charge, and it should not be treated as a rate that applies in every state.
Insurance pricing depends on the driver and the policy as well as the car. To get a useful estimate, request quotes for the exact model year and trim, using the address where the vehicle will be kept and the same driving and coverage details for each insurer. Compare the quote on equivalent terms rather than choosing solely by the lowest headline premium.
- Use your actual address and the correct Z trim and model year.
- Provide the relevant drivers’ history and expected annual mileage.
- Keep coverage limits and deductibles consistent across quotes.
- Confirm whether each price is for the same policy term and payment arrangement.
- Ask how changing a deductible or coverage limit affects both the premium and your out-of-pocket exposure after a claim.
Edmunds’ insurance component is useful only as one part of its standardized ownership comparison. Use insurer quotes for your own budget rather than converting that modeled amount into a personal annual premium.

What should you budget for maintenance and repairs?
Maintenance costs depend on the car’s configuration, how far it is driven, and the conditions in which it is used. Nissan’s maintenance tool asks owners to enter a VIN or select a trim to find recommendations. Nissan’s schedule landing page for 2025 does not display service intervals or service prices, so it does not support a universal dollar-per-year budget or a complete service-interval table for every 2026 Z.

Build a service estimate for your car
- Use Nissan’s maintenance tool with the vehicle’s VIN or the closest available trim selection. Check that the selected vehicle matches the model year and configuration you own or plan to buy.
- Review the recommendations for your expected distance traveled and driving conditions. A schedule tailored to the car and its use is more useful than an assumed flat annual maintenance figure.
- Ask a local Nissan dealer or qualified independent shop for an itemized estimate based on those recommendations and your location. Ask what the estimate covers and whether parts, labor, and applicable fees are included.
- Keep the service estimate separate from a repair reserve. Scheduled maintenance and unscheduled repairs are different cost categories, even though both contribute to the cost of keeping the car on the road.
Edmunds models maintenance and repairs as separate lines. Its selected five-year estimate assigns $7,328 to maintenance and $882 to repairs. Those are comparative estimates, not a service quote, a stated Nissan price schedule, or a prediction for an individual vehicle. Actual needs and costs depend on the car’s use and condition and the shop doing the work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do trim, mileage, and financing change the total?
The right ownership estimate is not just a fuel calculation. Start with the exact vehicle and your own use, then add costs using assumptions that match your circumstances. A manual and automatic Z have different EPA economy estimates; mileage changes how much fuel you buy and how often distance-based service recommendations become relevant. A trim’s starting price also changes the amount you may finance and can affect the value subject to depreciation.
Financing should be calculated from the deal you can actually get, not copied from an estimate based on a different buyer profile. Down payment, loan term, interest rate, amount financed, and fees determine the financing cost. Taxes and fees depend on the transaction and location. If you compare a financed car with one bought outright, keep the comparison clear about whether it includes interest and other loan costs.

A practical way to assemble your own budget
- Choose the exact configuration. Record model year, trim, and transmission, and use the actual transaction price rather than relying only on a listed starting MSRP.
- Set a time period and mileage. Choose how long you expect to own the car and how many miles you expect to drive in a typical year.
- Estimate fuel from local inputs. Use the matching EPA rating or a relevant observed figure, your annual mileage, and the local premium price per gallon.
- Get insurance quotes. Use the same driver, address, annual mileage, limits, and deductibles for each quote you compare.
- Price service locally. Use Nissan’s VIN- or trim-based recommendations and request an itemized estimate from a shop in your area.
- Add repairs, financing, taxes, fees, and depreciation as separate assumptions. Use actual loan and transaction figures where available, and label any modeled resale or repair figure as an estimate.
- Review the result when inputs change. Recalculate if your mileage, fuel price, insurance policy, loan, ownership period, or selected vehicle changes.
This approach makes the estimate useful without disguising uncertainty. An owner who drives less, pays a different premium-fuel price, receives a different insurance quote, or buys at a different transaction price will not have the same total as a standardized ownership model.
What specifications matter to ownership?
For the 2026 U.S. Z, Nissan lists a 6.9-cubic-foot cargo volume, a basic warranty of 36 months or 36,000 miles, and a powertrain warranty of 60 months or 60,000 miles. These figures describe the listed warranty coverage and cargo capacity; they do not establish what insurance will cost, what service will cost, or what repairs a particular owner may need.
Warranty coverage is relevant when considering the period of ownership, but do not assume that every repair is covered. Check the warranty terms for the actual vehicle and understand the applicable time and mileage limits. For a particular purchase, verify the model-year build, included equipment, destination charge, options, and dealer transaction price against the final paperwork.
How to compare the Z with another car
A meaningful comparison uses the same ownership period and consistent assumptions for both vehicles. Comparing one car’s base price with another car’s five-year total, or one driver’s insurance quote with a broad model average, can produce a misleading result.
- Compare the same model year when possible, and identify trim and transmission.
- Use transaction prices, not just starting MSRPs, and account for taxes, fees, down payment, loan term, and financing.
- Calculate fuel using each vehicle’s relevant EPA combined estimate, the same annual mileage, and local fuel prices appropriate to each vehicle.
- Use personal insurance quotes with matching policy limits, deductibles, address, and driver details.
- Compare scheduled service and repair estimates over the same mileage and ownership period.
- Include depreciation if you are comparing total ownership cost, while recognizing that it is an estimate rather than a bill or guaranteed resale value.
The Z’s EPA estimates vary by transmission and trim, while Edmunds’ total includes both running costs and non-running ownership costs. Keeping those categories distinct helps show whether a difference comes from fuel use, the purchase and loan, insurance, or another part of the budget.
