Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe right first project car is one you can afford to buy and keep, whose condition you can assess, and whose work matches what you want to learn. Before you buy, check the car’s records and recall status, verify that repair information and parts are available for its exact configuration, and arrange an independent mechanic’s inspection with written estimates. A non-running car is not automatically a bargain—or a suitable beginner project.
Decide what you want the car to do
Start with the jobs you want to learn and how you will use the car. A project that can stay off the road while you work gives you different options from one that must serve as daily transportation. Consider whether you have somewhere to store it and enough time and workspace for the work you have in mind.
Choose a few candidate models based on genuine interest, local availability, parts access, and the complexity of the repairs you want to tackle. No single make or model is the best first project for everyone: location, budget, goals, and the need for reliable transport all change the decision.
Set a budget for buying and keeping it
Do not treat the asking price as the project’s total cost. Consumer.gov identifies registration, sales tax, insurance, fuel, and maintenance as additional vehicle costs; financing adds interest. Set a ceiling that includes the purchase and immediate safety and maintenance work, and keep a separate allowance for unexpected repairs. There is no universally supported reserve amount, so base yours on the candidate’s condition and the work it needs.

Get repair estimates before you commit. If the inspection finds substantial work, compare the estimated cost with your budget and the car’s asking price rather than assuming you can deal with everything later.
Check the exact car’s records, recalls, and repair support
- Ask for the VIN, title status, service records, and known faults. Request these before travelling to see the vehicle.
- Check for open recalls. Use the recall resource relevant to the country where the car is registered or will be used.
- Look for repair information for the exact configuration. Confirm make, model, year, sub-model, and engine. Haynes lets shoppers filter its catalog by these details, but catalog coverage varies: check its catalog rather than assuming a manual exists for every version.
A repair manual can help with routine learning, but it does not replace qualified help for safety-critical repairs.

Inspect condition before deciding whether it is a project you can take on
Look beyond the visible bodywork
Check the body and underside, paying particular attention to structural areas and mounting points. Rust in a load-bearing section is not just a cosmetic issue. The UK Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency’s MOT inspection guidance states: “A relatively small amount of corrosion in an important part of a vehicle structure, where it compromises its load bearing capacity, can make a vehicle unsafe.” This is UK inspection guidance, not a universal legal standard, but the safety concern applies when assessing a car anywhere.
Use records, a history report, and a mechanical inspection for different questions
A vehicle history report may show information such as reported accidents or flood damage, but the FTC notes it typically will not list mechanical problems. Records can reveal how the car was maintained; neither records nor a history report substitutes for examining the car’s mechanical condition.

Arrange an inspection by a trusted independent mechanic before purchase. Ask for a written report that identifies the vehicle and VIN, lists needed repairs, and estimates their cost. A mechanical inspection is also different from a safety inspection required by a jurisdiction. If you test-drive the car, do so in conditions similar to how you expect to use it, when that is possible and safe.
Should your first project car be running?
That depends on whether the car must be roadworthy soon, whether you can keep it off the road, and whether you can diagnose and fund the work it needs. A running car can still have serious defects, while a non-running car may have faults that are difficult to identify before purchase. The condition report and repair estimates matter more than the running/non-running label.

If you need dependable daily transport, favor a candidate whose condition and immediate repair needs fit that requirement. If you can store a car and work on it without relying on it for transportation, you may have more flexibility—but do not buy a non-runner without understanding the likely work and costs.

There is no universal scoring formula. The goal is not to buy the cheapest car; it is to choose a project whose risks and workload you can realistically manage.
