Start with the owner’s manual for your exact car: it sets the maintenance schedule, fluid specifications and tire-pressure target. A simple routine of monthly checks, scheduled service and attention to new warning signs can help you catch problems early without replacing vehicle-specific guidance.
Start with the owner’s manual
Find the manual for your car’s year, make, model and powertrain. Follow its maintenance schedule for your type of driving; frequent short trips, heavy loads or other conditions may call for a different schedule than ordinary use. The Federal Trade Commission advises drivers to follow the manufacturer’s schedule and to ask a shop to explain recommendations that go beyond it: FTC auto repair guidance.
Use the manual for the correct oil, fluids, service intervals and tire-rotation instructions. These specifications vary by vehicle, so a general checklist cannot safely supply one oil type, coolant or interval for every car.
A manageable beginner maintenance routine
Monthly: tires, lights and a quick look around
- Check tire pressure when the tires are cold. NHTSA defines this as at least three hours after driving. Use a tire-pressure gauge and compare the reading with the pressure on the driver-door area placard or in the owner’s manual—not the maximum pressure printed on the tire. Check every tire, including the spare if your car has one. See NHTSA tire safety guidance.
- Inspect tire condition. Look for visible damage to the tread or sidewalls. Ask a tire professional about damage or wear you cannot assess confidently.
- Test exterior lights. Check that headlights, brake lights, turn signals and other exterior lights work. Clean windows and headlights so dirt does not obstruct visibility.
- Look for fresh puddles or visible leaks. A leak’s color alone is not enough to identify its source or determine the repair; have an unexplained leak checked.
Periodically and before a long trip: check under the hood
Use the manual to learn how to check the oil and which other fluid levels are meant to be inspected by the owner. Check them periodically and before a long trip, following the vehicle’s instructions. NHTSA’s summer driving and road-trip checklist also recommends checking oil and applicable fluids. Do not open a hot cooling system.

Before a trip, confirm that the spare tire and the vehicle jack or mobility kit are present if supplied. Some cars rely on a tire mobility kit rather than a spare.
At scheduled service: follow the car’s schedule
Use the maintenance schedule for oil and filter changes, coolant, transmission service and other scheduled work. Tire rotation intervals and patterns differ by vehicle; some cars with different front and rear tire sizes cannot rotate tires front to rear. Follow the manual and check that a shop’s proposed rotation fits your tire setup.

A shop may identify a real issue or recommend work beyond the manufacturer’s schedule. Before approving it, compare the recommendation with the manual and ask:

- What condition or inspection finding makes the work necessary?
- Is the work required now, or is it preventive?
- How do my driving conditions affect the manufacturer’s interval?
- Where does this service appear in the vehicle’s maintenance schedule?
The FTC cautions that some shops propose service more frequently than the manufacturer recommends. Ask for a clear explanation rather than assuming either that every added service is required or that it is automatically unnecessary.

Pay attention to changes in sounds, smells, handling, warning lights, fluid use or the appearance of puddles. Tell the repair shop what changed and when it began; ask it to explain the diagnosis and proposed work. The FTC’s repair guidance recommends asking questions about the work a shop proposes.

- Brake pulling, a sinking brake pedal, grinding, or a brake warning light: Arrange prompt diagnosis rather than treating these as routine maintenance.
- Severe overheating, especially with steam and a hot metallic smell: Stop driving and arrange a tow. Do not open the cooling system while it is hot.
- A fluid leak or a warning that makes the car unsafe to drive: Seek service; if continuing to drive could be unsafe, stop and arrange assistance.
Basic tools and what they can—and cannot—do
A tire-pressure gauge is a useful first tool because it lets you make the monthly cold-pressure check. A portable inflator can add air when appropriate, but it does not repair a damaged tire. For repairs, fluids or replacement parts, confirm fitment and specifications for your particular vehicle rather than choosing by a generic label.
This is general U.S.-oriented guidance, not a diagnosis or a substitute for the manual. Exact schedules and specifications depend on the vehicle and how it is used.
