If your vehicle has an open safety recall, contact a dealership for its brand and schedule the manufacturer’s recall remedy. The repair itself is free. First check the vehicle’s VIN or license plate in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall lookup, then follow any safety instructions in the recall notice. If a dealer refuses or says the repair is unavailable, contact the manufacturer and, if needed, report the issue to NHTSA.
1. Check whether your specific vehicle has an open recall
Use NHTSA’s recall lookup and search by VIN or license plate. A VIN is a 17-character identifier; NHTSA explains where to find it on the vehicle and its paperwork.
A search by year, make, and model shows general recall information. A VIN or license plate search is the better way to check for unrepaired recalls associated with a particular vehicle. You can also check the manufacturer’s recall lookup: manufacturer-provided VIN information may appear before it is posted on NHTSA’s site.
If the lookup shows a recall, note the campaign details and read the manufacturer’s notice. If no open recall appears, that result does not replace the notice or instructions from the manufacturer; check again if you receive a new notice or have reason to believe a campaign applies.

2. Follow the notice’s safety instructions
Read the recall notice before driving to a dealership. Some notices give interim instructions, such as not driving the vehicle or parking it outside, while a permanent remedy is being developed. Follow the manufacturer’s specific directions and contact the manufacturer or dealer for advice if you are unsure what to do.
3. Schedule the recall remedy with the brand’s dealership
Call a dealership that services your vehicle’s brand. Give the service department your VIN, explain that the lookup shows an open recall, and ask to schedule the recall remedy. Ask whether the remedy and required parts are available and what arrangements you need to make for the appointment.
NHTSA says recall repairs are provided at no charge at the manufacturer’s dealership. The no-charge promise applies to the recall remedy, not unrelated maintenance, additional diagnostics, or other work you choose to have done. If the shop recommends extra paid work, ask for a separate explanation and estimate before authorizing it.

4. If the remedy or parts are not available yet
A recall can be announced before a repair is ready. The manufacturer may need time to develop repair procedures and distribute parts. NHTSA says interim notices should communicate short-term safety actions when a remedy will take an extended time to develop.

Ask the dealer or manufacturer what applies to your campaign, whether parts are expected, and what you should do in the meantime. Do not assume the vehicle is safe to drive just because the final repair is not yet available; follow the notice’s instructions.
5. If the dealer refuses to repair the vehicle
NHTSA’s owner guide says: “If a dealer refuses to repair your vehicle in accordance with the recall letter you received from the manufacturer, you should immediately notify the manufacturer.” — National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Motor Vehicle Safety Defects and Recalls: What Every Vehicle Owner Should Know.

Contact the manufacturer using the customer-service details in the recall notice or on its website. Explain what the dealer said and ask the manufacturer to resolve the refusal. You can also file a complaint with NHTSA.
- Keep the dealership’s name and location, the date, and the name or role of the person you spoke with, if known.
- Write down what the dealer said and keep any estimate, repair order, or refusal in writing.
- Provide the VIN and recall campaign information when contacting the manufacturer or NHTSA.
NHTSA says owners are entitled to a free remedy within a reasonable time after a recall is initiated. What counts as a reasonable time in a particular dispute depends on the campaign and circumstances; raise a delay with the manufacturer or NHTSA rather than assuming a specific deadline.
6. If you already paid for a repair
You may be eligible for reimbursement for a repair made before the recall, but reimbursement is not automatic for every past repair. NHTSA’s current owner guide describes date-dependent conditions and requires documentation. Contact the manufacturer and ask it to assess your individual case under the applicable campaign rules.

Have the VIN, recall information, repair invoice, proof of payment, and repair date ready. The manufacturer can tell you whether the repair and its timing meet the reimbursement requirements.
Why it is worth checking
NHTSA’s March 3, 2026 consumer alert reported 997 vehicle and equipment safety recalls and more than 29 million vehicles recalled in the United States during 2025. Those figures cover 2025, not 2026. Because recall campaigns and repair availability change, check the current status for your VIN and follow the manufacturer’s notice.
