How to Follow an IMSA Endurance Race: Timing, Classes, and Driver Changes

Follow IMSA endurance racing with a practical guide to class positions, Live Timing & Scoring, qualifying, driver rotations, pit stops, radio and video.

Open IMSA Live Timing & Scoring alongside the race broadcast, then follow each car’s class position, listed current driver, lap times and pit information—not just its place in the overall order. IMSA endurance races put four classes on the same track, so a car can be well behind another on the road and still be ahead in its own class. The current event’s entry list and spotters guide help connect car numbers to teams and drivers; IMSA Radio or the event’s listed video coverage adds commentary and context.

Start with the four class battles

The WeatherTech SportsCar Championship shares one circuit among four classes. There is an overall running order, but each class also has its own contest. A GT car passing a prototype, for example, does not necessarily mean it has gained a place against cars in its class. For following a particular entry, use the class position as your main measure and the overall position as additional context.

Class Type What distinguishes it
GTP Prototype The top prototype category. IMSA describes GTP as its newest and most technologically advanced prototype class; most entries feature a common hybrid powertrain.
LMP2 Prototype Closed-cockpit prototypes developed by approved constructors and eligible for other global series.
GTD PRO GT Cars built to GT3 regulations, with factory teams and eligible driver lineups.
GTD GT Cars using the global FIA GT3 specification.

GTP and LMP2 are prototypes; GTD PRO and GTD are GT cars. The two GT classes share the GT3 specification, but remain separate class competitions. Do not infer a car’s class solely from its manufacturer or appearance. Manufacturer participation and specific entries can change by season, so use the active event’s entry list and spotters guide to identify a car.

It helps to think of the event as several races sharing a track, rather than one field where every pass has the same meaning. An overall position tells you where a car sits among all the cars circulating; a class position compares it with the entries contesting the same category. Both are useful, but they answer different questions. If the aim is to follow whether a particular team is gaining or losing ground against its direct rivals, keep your attention on class position and use the overall order to understand traffic and the broader race picture.

Read the Leader Light System as a class indicator

IMSA’s Leader Light System puts an LED panel on each car to show its position within its class. The number’s color corresponds to the class. This is useful when cars from different classes are mixed together on track, but it is not a substitute for the timing feed: use the current official class guide and event spotters guide for the specific colors and car identifications rather than relying on memory.

The lights are especially helpful when you are watching from the circuit and a group of cars arrives together. They offer a quick trackside clue about the car’s place in its class, but they do not give the full context shown by Live T&S, such as the listed driver, lap information or pit status. Check the official guide for the current event rather than memorizing a color scheme from a previous season or assuming the visual cue identifies a manufacturer.

Use live timing to follow a car, not just the camera

IMSA describes Live Timing & Scoring (Live T&S) in its mobile app as a stream of the official timing feed used by teams and engineers. It can show a team’s position on track, the current driver, lap times, pit information and other session data during practice, qualifying and the race. The exact screen and access route can depend on current app and event offerings; check the event information rather than assuming every feature is available on every device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A video director follows the action worth showing at a given moment. That may mean the camera leaves the car you care about, or a battle between two classes fills the screen. Timing gives you a separate status picture: whether your car is improving its class position, how its laps compare, whether it has pitted, and which driver the feed currently lists. Use the video to see what happened and hear the explanation, and the timing page to track what is happening across the field.

IMSA says the timing data is streamed from its official feed, the same feed teams and engineers use. For a fan, the practical benefit is continuity: the timing display can keep you oriented when a broadcast is focused elsewhere. It is not a substitute for watching or listening if you want to know why something happened. A changed position or pit indication is a status update; it does not, by itself, explain a team’s plan, the work done on the car or the circumstances of an on-track pass.

A simple way to monitor one entry

  1. Identify the car. Find its number, team and class in the current event’s entry list or spotters guide. Entries and documents can change as an event approaches, so check the current event page.
  2. Open Live T&S. Use IMSA’s live timing and scoring in the app if available for the event. Locate the car and note its class position, listed driver, lap information and pit status.
  3. Keep class position separate from overall position. A car can move in the overall order because it has passed or been passed by another class without changing its place among its own class rivals.
  4. Check the feed after major events. After a pit visit, caution or change in the on-track order, revisit the car’s listed driver, position and pit information. Use commentary or the video to understand the context behind a change.

For official session results and standings, use IMSA’s event resources and results listings. Live timing helps follow a session as it unfolds; a results page is the reference for its recorded outcome.

If you are following more than one entry, start with a small list of car numbers rather than trying to memorize the whole field. Write down the class beside each number so you can interpret a position change correctly. When checking timing, look at the same fields in the same order—class position, current driver, lap information and pit status. This makes it easier to notice meaningful changes without treating every movement in the overall order as a class result.

Know what qualifying and the start tell you

Qualifying establishes the starting order, but it does not erase the separate class contests. IMSA’s qualifying explainer describes a 20-minute segment for GTP and 15-minute segments for each of the other classes. The fastest lap in each class earns the Motul Pole Award.

GTP and LMP2 cars line up according to their class qualifying order. GTD PRO and GTD cars are placed in a combined GT order based on qualifying times. That means the grid is not simply four class queues lined up one after another. Once the race starts, follow each entry’s own class position as well as its overall place.

Use qualifying as a starting reference, not a forecast of the race. The pole award recognizes the fastest qualifying lap in a class; during the race, the class order changes as cars circulate, make pit stops and share driving duties. For a particular event, the official schedule and results show what happened in qualifying and the applicable grid information. A qualifying explainer describes the general format, while the event’s official documents resolve the details for that race.

A canceled qualifying session or subsequent rule change can alter how a particular event sets its grid. For a specific race, consult the event’s official schedule and results and the applicable current regulations rather than assuming the usual qualifying format determines the final lineup.

Follow driver changes through the pit stop

Endurance races require teams to share driving duties. IMSA’s general guide says a race has at least two drivers; Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta endurance races may use three to four. Those figures describe IMSA’s guide, not a guarantee for every entry or a replacement for current event rules. The applicable sporting regulations and event bulletins determine binding requirements.

A driver change happens as part of a pit stop, which may also involve fuel, tires, repairs or other service. IMSA’s guide says that when a change takes place, one crew member is allowed over the wall to help connect the incoming driver’s radio, air hoses, drink tube and safety belts. That assistance is one part of a coordinated stop; the timing feed can show the car’s pit information, while the broadcast may explain the team’s choice of service or timing.

That list of connections gives a sense of why a driver change is more than simply having one person climb out and another climb in. The incoming driver needs the relevant equipment connected and the belts secured as part of the change. The guide’s description concerns the assistance allowed when a change takes place; it does not mean every stop includes a change or that every pit visit has the same service plan. Watch the car and check the live listing before deciding what happened.

How to tell who is in the car

  1. Check the current driver before the stop. Note the name shown for the entry in Live T&S. The entry list tells you who is assigned to the car, but the live feed is the useful reference for who is currently listed as driving.
  2. Watch or listen through the pit visit. A driver can climb out while the crew handles other work, and not every stop necessarily includes a driver change. Do not assume a change occurred simply because the car pitted.
  3. Check the current-driver field again after the stop. Compare it with the name you noted. If it changes, the car has a different driver listed; if it does not, the stop may have been for service without a rotation.
  4. Read the position alongside the stop. The car may lose time or places while stopped, but the visit could also reflect planned strategy or a need for repairs. Use timing to track the change and commentary to learn what the broadcast can establish about the reason.

Timing can tell you the car’s listed driver and pit status, but those fields do not by themselves explain a team’s strategy or confirm every detail of a service stop. Treat the visual coverage and commentary as complementary evidence, not as a reason to guess when a feed is delayed or a stop is not shown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a useful before-and-after check, note the listed driver and class position just before a car enters the pits, then revisit those same fields when it returns to the running order. If the driver’s name has changed, you have a clear indication of a rotation in the feed. If the name is unchanged, the stop may have covered fuel, tires, repairs or other service without a driver change. The position comparison shows the result in the standings, but not necessarily the reason for it.

Choose the right combination of timing, audio and video

These options answer different questions. Live timing is strongest for positions, current-driver listings, laps and pit context. Video shows the visible action and may provide broadcast explanation. Audio is useful when you want commentary without keeping the video on screen. Combining them is often more informative than relying on any one alone.

Option Useful for What to verify
IMSA Live T&S Following positions, current driver, lap times and pit information from the official timing feed. Current app features, availability and event access.
IMSA Radio Live WeatherTech Championship practice and qualifying coverage, plus full-length race coverage. Event audio routes and local availability.
Event video or replay Seeing on-track action, with live video and in-car cameras described in IMSA app information; IMSA TV listings include race broadcasts and replays. The event’s listing and coverage for your location. Do not assume every race or feature is offered everywhere.
Event entry list and spotters guide Matching car numbers to teams, classes and drivers before or during the race. The latest event documents, which may be updated as the event approaches.

There is no single best choice for every viewer. If you mainly want to know where a car stands and who is listed as its driver, start with timing. If you want to see overtakes, pit-lane action and the cars on track, add video when a live listing is available. If you want commentary while doing something else, IMSA Radio offers an audio route. The most reliable setup is the one you have checked for that event and location, rather than assuming one platform carries every session everywhere.

For radio at home or at the track

IMSA says IMSA Radio carries live WeatherTech Championship practice and qualifying and full-length race coverage. Its guide lists scanner channel 454.000 and SiriusXM for championship events; local AM/FM availability is conditional. For trackside scanner use, check the event’s audio information and confirm that your device can receive the listed channel. Reception and local rules should not be assumed to be identical at every venue. The channel information alone does not establish a preferred scanner model or guarantee reception.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A programmable handheld scanner that can receive 454.000 MHz is one possible option for a trackside listener, but it is conditional rather than essential. Verify the device’s capabilities and the event’s current audio information before buying or relying on one. No particular model, price or universal reception result follows from the channel listing. At home, check the event’s listed audio routes, including whether SiriusXM or a local broadcast option applies to you.

Verify video for your event and location

IMSA’s app information describes live video and in-car cameras, and IMSA TV lists broadcasts and replays. Coverage can vary by event and viewer location. Check the specific event listing for what is live, what is available as a replay and which viewing routes apply where you are. The listing, rather than a general assumption about the championship, is the reliable guide to a particular race’s coverage.

Use event documents before the green flag

The event page is the starting point for the schedule, entry list and spotters guide. The schedule tells you when sessions are planned; the entry list connects numbers with teams and drivers; and the spotters guide helps distinguish cars and classes. These materials can change as an event approaches, so recheck them near race day. The event’s official results and current regulations are also the appropriate references for session outcomes and event-specific rules.

A useful pre-race routine is to choose one or two entries to follow, write down their numbers and classes, and keep the spotters guide nearby. When the race begins, the class position in Live T&S gives you a clearer view of their contest than the overall order alone. During long stretches when your chosen car is off camera, the current-driver and pit fields help you stay oriented; when it returns to the broadcast, the image and commentary can supply the missing scene.

Make the routine event-specific. Confirm the schedule, then check the latest entry list and spotters guide close to race day because entries and documents can change as an event approaches. Note that the guide is an aid to identifying cars, while the current driver shown in live timing is the reference for who is listed as driving during the session. For binding requirements, including driver and grid details, use the current regulations and event bulletins rather than relying on a general explainer.

Common viewing mistakes to avoid

  • Reading only the overall order: Cars from several classes occupy the same circuit. Check the class position to see how an entry is doing against its actual class rivals.
  • Guessing a class from the car’s appearance: Verify the number and class against current event documents, particularly because entries and manufacturer participation change by season.
  • Assuming every pit stop changes drivers: Check the current-driver field before and after the stop. Fuel, tires, repairs or other work can happen without a rotation.
  • Treating a general guide as the event rulebook: Qualifying formats, driver requirements, grids and other details for a specific race should be checked against current regulations, bulletins and official event information.
  • Assuming a broadcast or scanner route works everywhere: Confirm the event’s current listings and your location’s availability before relying on a particular video or audio option.
  • Taking a timing change as a complete explanation: A pit indicator or position change tells you what the feed reports, not necessarily what service was performed or why a team chose that moment. Use coverage and commentary for context, without filling in details that are not shown.

A practical race-following routine

Before the event, identify the cars you care about from the latest entry list and spotters guide, and check the schedule and available coverage. At the start, use the class order to understand the contest and keep overall position in perspective. During the race, keep Live T&S open beside video or audio, checking the current driver and pit fields when an entry stops. After a stop, compare the driver listing and class position with what you saw before; use the broadcast for context when it is available. For final session outcomes, consult IMSA’s official results.

If you are at home, test the timing and viewing route you intend to use and check the event listing for video and audio availability. If you are at the track, the spotters guide helps with visual identification, and the event audio information can tell you whether IMSA Radio is available through a scanner or another listed route. Neither approach requires you to watch every car continuously: choosing a few entries and returning to their timing information after key moments makes a long race easier to follow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest way to follow an IMSA endurance race?

Use IMSA Live Timing & Scoring alongside the event’s video or audio coverage. Timing can show a car’s class position, listed current driver, lap times and pit information; the broadcast adds visible action and commentary. Use the current event entry list or spotters guide to identify car numbers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the four IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship classes?

The four classes are GTP, LMP2, GTD PRO and GTD. GTP and LMP2 are prototypes; GTD PRO and GTD are GT cars based on GT3 specifications. Each class has its own competition as well as a place in the overall order.

How do I tell who is driving an IMSA car right now?

Check the current-driver field for the car in Live T&S. Compare it before and after a pit stop to see whether the listed driver changed. An entry list identifies assigned drivers, but the live timing field is the practical reference during the session.

Does every IMSA pit stop include a driver change?

No. Stops may include fuel, tires, repairs or other service without a driver rotation. Check the current-driver listing before and after the stop rather than assuming that a pit visit means a new driver is in the car.

Where can I listen to IMSA Radio at the track?

IMSA lists scanner channel 454.000 and SiriusXM for championship events, while local AM/FM availability is conditional. Check the specific event’s audio details and confirm your scanner can receive the listed channel; reception and local rules can vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many drivers are required for an IMSA endurance race?

IMSA’s general guide says there are at least two drivers per race, and that Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta endurance races may use three to four. Check current sporting regulations and event bulletins for binding requirements for a particular race.

The Bottom Line

To follow an IMSA endurance race, track class position rather than relying on overall order alone, keep Live T&S open for the listed driver and pit information, and use the current event entry list and spotters guide to identify cars. Pair timing with whichever official audio or video route is listed for your event and location.
