On a Sprint weekend, Friday and Saturday include extra competitive sessions and a separate short race. The exact timetable and local start times vary by event, so check the official Formula 1 calendar and event schedule before planning to watch.
How a standard Grand Prix weekend is structured
The usual format spreads three kinds of activity across the weekend: practice, qualifying and the Grand Prix. Practice is preparation, qualifying determines the starting order, and the Grand Prix is the main race.
| Day | Standard weekend sessions | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Friday | Free Practice 1 (FP1) and Free Practice 2 (FP2) | Teams learn the circuit and work through their setup and preparation plans. |
| Saturday | Free Practice 3 (FP3), then Grand Prix qualifying | The final practice session leads into the knockout session that sets the Grand Prix grid. |
| Sunday | The Grand Prix | The main race, starting from the grid established by qualifying, subject to penalties and final grid procedures. |
This is the usual sequence, not a guarantee of identical session times at every venue. Event schedules and local start times vary, so use the official timetable for the race you plan to follow.
What practice tells you—and what it does not
FP1, FP2 and FP3
Free Practice (FP) gives teams track time to check the car, learn the circuit, compare setup choices and rehearse qualifying and race runs. In a standard weekend, FP1 and FP2 are usually one hour each on Friday, with a third one-hour session on Saturday. Teams may use FP1 for early systems and track-learning work, FP2 for longer race-preparation runs and qualifying simulations, and FP3 for final preparation before qualifying. These are common uses, not a fixed programme for every team.

How to read the practice leaderboard
A practice result shows who set the quickest time in that session; it is not a dependable prediction of the qualifying order or race result. Teams can be running different fuel loads, tyre compounds, setup options and test programmes, while conditions can change between sessions. Treat the times as one clue about that session rather than a like-for-like comparison of race pace.
How Grand Prix qualifying sets the grid
Grand Prix qualifying is a three-stage knockout. Under the FIA Sporting Regulations, Section B, Issue 09, published 1 October 2026, Q1 lasts 18 minutes, Q2 lasts 15 minutes and Q3 lasts 13 minutes. For a standard 22-car field, six cars are eliminated after Q1 and six more after Q2; the ten remaining drivers contest Q3 for the top ten grid positions. The fastest lap in Q3 earns pole position. A penalty or the official grid process can still change where a driver starts.

| Stage | Duration under the 2026 FIA rules | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | 18 minutes | Six cars are eliminated in a standard 22-car field. |
| Q2 | 15 minutes | Six more are eliminated, leaving ten cars. |
| Q3 | 13 minutes | The ten remaining cars compete for the top ten grid positions; the fastest lap takes pole. |
The current regulation specifies a 13-minute Q3. Formula 1’s beginner’s guide and glossary do not agree on that duration, so the 2026 FIA regulation is the controlling reference for the current format. See the FIA 2026 Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, Section B, Issue 09.
What changes on an F1 Sprint weekend
A Sprint weekend has one free-practice session instead of three. Sprint Qualifying on Friday sets the grid for Saturday’s Sprint; Grand Prix qualifying still takes place later on Saturday and sets the grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix. The Sprint therefore does not replace Grand Prix qualifying.

Quick Recap
A simple way to follow the weekend
- Start with the event schedule. Find the venue’s official timetable and translate session times to your local time zone.
- Use practice for context. Notice how teams work through the circuit and their preparations, but do not treat a single practice leaderboard as a forecast.
- Watch the right qualifying session for the race you mean. Grand Prix qualifying sets Sunday’s grid; on Sprint weekends, Sprint Qualifying separately sets the Sprint grid.
- Keep the points races distinct. Sprint points go to the top eight in the Sprint; the Grand Prix remains the main race on Sunday.
