If BMW Remote Engine Start will not work, first confirm the car is equipped and eligible, then check that the feature is enabled in iDrive. If the problem started after a Remote Software Upgrade, BMW says the update may have reset the setting. For app-only failures, verify ConnectedDrive Remote Services and in-car data-transfer consent; also check the vehicle’s operating conditions.
This guidance reflects BMW USA information and menu paths for the listed iDrive operating systems. Eligibility and exact instructions vary by vehicle, so use the in-car owner’s manual and your ConnectedDrive account for VIN-specific details.
First, identify what is failing
Is Remote Engine Start unavailable in the My BMW App, missing from the vehicle’s climate or departure settings, or not responding to the key fob? The distinction helps narrow the cause: an app-only problem may involve Remote Services or privacy consent, while a failure that began after an update may be the iDrive activation setting. BMW documents app and key-fob operation after activation, but their access requirements are not identical.
Confirm your BMW is equipped and eligible
BMW says the feature is available for purchase on most model-year 2019 and newer vehicles with an automatic transmission, a four- or six-cylinder internal-combustion engine, and an active ConnectedDrive account. Those criteria do not guarantee that a particular car or VIN qualifies. Check the vehicle in My BMW Garage or the ConnectedDrive Store.

Enable Remote Engine Start in iDrive
BMW’s 2024 guide gives different menu paths by operating system. Open the path that matches your vehicle and make sure the Remote Engine Start checkbox is enabled:
- Operating System 7: CAR > Settings > Climate control > Preconditioning/ventilation > Remote Engine Start > Starting engine for climate control. Accept the disclaimer if prompted.
- Operating Systems 8 and 8.5: Climate Control > Pre-conditioning > Remote Engine Start.
- Operating System 9: Climate Control > Settings > Pre-conditioning > Remote Engine Start.
Menu labels can vary with software and vehicle configuration. If the path does not match your screen, consult the in-car manual rather than assuming the feature is absent.

If it stopped working after a software update
BMW says a Remote Software Upgrade can reset iDrive to factory settings and deactivate Remote Engine Start. Revisit the matching menu path above, enable the feature, and accept any disclaimer. This is a documented possibility, not proof that every post-update failure has the same cause.
If the My BMW App will not start the engine
Check the app prerequisites in this order:
- Confirm the car is equipped with Remote Engine Start and is technically capable of using the function.
- Check that the ConnectedDrive contract for Remote Services is active.
- In the vehicle’s Privacy menu, allow data transfer.
- In the My BMW App, open the Vehicle tab and select the climate/fan control in Remote Services.
For a newly purchased upgrade, BMW says activation is required once in the app under Vehicle > Remote Services or by locking the vehicle three times with its key. BMW describes the app’s Remote Services requirements separately from key-fob operation.

Check operating conditions and the consecutive-start limit
BMW’s Operating System 8 preconditioning guidance lists these conditions for remote operation:
- The vehicle is in idle or standby, not drive-ready.
- The battery has sufficient charge and the fuel level is sufficient.
- The hood is closed.
- The vehicle’s date and time are correct.
- The air vents are open.
BMW also says the system permits two consecutive remote activations. To make it available again, put the vehicle into drive-ready state and then take it out of drive-ready state. These are OS8 instructions; check the owner’s manual for the requirements that apply to other models.

If a recent purchase is missing from the car
BMW says a low battery, low outside temperature, or the need for several drives can delay a purchased feature from appearing. If it remains unavailable, BMW lists [email protected] and 1-888-333-6118 for assistance.

Remote Engine Start is intended to precondition the cabin, not to leave the vehicle running indefinitely. BMW specifies a maximum run of 15 minutes; you can stop it manually in the My BMW App or with the key fob. After two consecutive remote starts, the vehicle must be started from inside before remote starting becomes available again.

When the checks do not resolve it
If the vehicle meets the eligibility criteria, the iDrive setting is enabled, app prerequisites are satisfied where relevant, and the listed operating conditions are met, consult the vehicle’s manual or contact BMW through the listed Customer Care channels. A failure affecting one control route but not another can help narrow the issue; the information here cannot diagnose a specific VIN, error message, market, or app version.
