Most Android Auto “communication errors” are connection-chain failures, not one single problem. The right fix depends on whether Android Auto is wired or wireless, whether the exact phone and vehicle are compatible, and whether the failure is in the cable, pairing process, phone software, or infotainment system.
Most Android Auto “communication errors” are not one specific fault. They are a family of connection failures involving the phone, USB cable, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi pairing, vehicle compatibility, or the car’s infotainment system. The fastest fix is to identify whether the connection is wired or wireless, confirm that the exact phone and vehicle support Android Auto, and then test the part of that connection chain most likely to be failing.
Start with these five checks
- Record the exact message. Photograph the screen if necessary. Different error numbers can indicate different problems.
- Identify the connection type. Is the phone connected by USB, or are you trying to use wireless Android Auto?
- Confirm compatibility. Check the exact vehicle model year, trim, infotainment unit, and whether it supports wired Android Auto, wireless Android Auto, or both. Also check the aftermarket stereo model if one is installed.
- Restart both sides. Restart the Android phone and fully power-cycle the infotainment system using the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure. This can clear a temporary fault, but it does not repair an incompatible system or damaged hardware.
- Test one variable at a time. For example, change the USB cable before changing phone settings. This makes it easier to identify the actual cause.
Check Android Auto compatibility first
Android Auto is a driver-optimized experience projected from a compatible Android phone to a compatible vehicle or aftermarket stereo. Android Developers currently documents support for phones running Android 9 or later, but the phone operating-system requirement alone does not prove that a particular car supports Android Auto.
Use Google’s Android Auto vehicle and stereo compatibility directory together with the vehicle manufacturer’s documentation. Check the exact model year and infotainment system, not just the vehicle name. Support can vary by trim, market, head-unit version, and whether the system supports wired or wireless operation. A vehicle may support wired Android Auto but not wireless Android Auto.

Fix wired Android Auto communication errors
For a wired connection, the USB cable must carry data as well as power. A phone can charge normally through a cable that is charge-only, damaged, loose, or unreliable for data. Charging therefore does not prove that the cable is suitable for Android Auto.
1. Try a known-good USB data cable
Use a short, undamaged USB cable that explicitly supports data transfer and has the correct connector for both the phone and vehicle. If your phone uses USB-C, the vehicle may have a USB-A or USB-C port, so match both ends to the actual sockets in the car.
Run this test in order:
- Disconnect the current cable.
- Connect the replacement or known-good cable directly between the phone and the vehicle’s designated Android Auto USB port.
- Try the vehicle’s other USB port only if the owner’s manual says it supports phone data or Android Auto. Many vehicles have charging-only ports.
- Keep the phone unlocked during the first connection and accept any Android Auto permissions or setup prompts.
- If possible, test the same phone and cable in another compatible vehicle, or test another compatible phone in the same vehicle.
2. Inspect the cable and phone port safely
Look for fraying, bent contacts, looseness, or visible damage at both ends of the cable. Check the phone’s USB port for lint or debris and make sure the plug seats fully. Do not insert a needle, paper clip, or other metal object into the phone port. If the connector is loose or the phone repeatedly connects and disconnects when the cable moves, the phone port or vehicle socket may need service.

- What You Get: You will receive 1pcs 1.5ft USB 3.1 Gen2 10Gbps Cable, with our 12-month product replacement warranty and lifetime 24/7 friendly technical support.
When charging works but Android Auto does not, suspect the cable’s data capability, the selected USB port, permissions, compatibility, or the vehicle’s head unit rather than assuming the phone is communicating correctly.
3. Complete setup from the car
With the vehicle in Park and the infotainment system on, plug the cable into the vehicle and phone and follow the on-screen instructions. The phone may request an Android Auto or related system-component update before setup can finish. Use the phone’s normal Settings and Google Play update mechanisms rather than downloading Android Auto packages from unofficial websites.
Fix wireless Android Auto pairing failures
Wireless Android Auto is a different connection path. The first setup normally uses Bluetooth pairing, while Wi-Fi and other phone services are also involved. Google’s setup guidance recommends keeping Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled while the connection is established.
Follow this sequence:
- Confirm that the vehicle or aftermarket stereo supports wireless Android Auto. Wired support alone is not enough.
- Delete the old vehicle pairing from the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Delete the phone from the vehicle’s paired-device list if the infotainment system provides that option.
- Restart the phone and fully restart the infotainment system.
- Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on the phone.
- Start pairing through the vehicle’s Android Auto or phone-connection workflow. Ordinary Bluetooth audio pairing by itself may provide calls and music without activating Android Auto.
- Accept the permissions and setup prompts shown on the phone and vehicle screen.
If the vehicle supports only wired Android Auto, use the USB troubleshooting steps instead of buying a wireless adapter. A wireless Android Auto adapter is an optional, compatibility-dependent accessory for some wired-compatible systems; it is not a universal fix for a communication error and should not be purchased until the vehicle, stereo, phone, and adapter requirements have been checked.

What Communication Error 8 usually means
Google’s Android Auto community troubleshooting guidance describes Communication Error 8 as an authentication failure between the car and phone. It identifies an incorrect date or time on the head unit as a likely cause.
Check the vehicle’s:
- date;
- clock time;
- time zone; and
- daylight-saving or summer/winter-time setting.
Compare the car’s clock with the phone’s time. Correct the setting, save it, shut down the infotainment system, restart the phone, and reconnect Android Auto.
This is a likely check, not a guaranteed diagnosis. If the clock repeatedly resets, displays an impossible date, or loses time whenever the vehicle is turned off, the head unit may have a firmware, power, battery, or hardware problem. The vehicle manufacturer or dealer will need to investigate that fault.
What Communication Error 12 usually means
Google’s FAQ describes Communication Error 12 as the car not responding. The problem may be temporary, but a poor USB cable is a common reason it returns on wired connections.

For Error 12, start with the highest-value tests:
- Replace the cable with a known-good USB data cable.
- Use the vehicle’s designated Android Auto data port.
- Restart the phone and infotainment system.
- Confirm the exact vehicle and phone compatibility.
- Test another compatible phone, if available.
If two compatible phones fail with two known-good data cables in the same vehicle, suspicion should shift away from the phone and toward the vehicle USB socket, head unit, infotainment firmware, or vehicle-specific integration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Update the phone and infotainment system safely
Android Auto is integrated into compatible Android phones, so there is usually no reason to search for an unofficial replacement application. During setup, the phone may request an update to Android Auto components. Install pending Android system updates through the phone’s normal Settings app and update Google Play services or other Google components when an update is offered through official channels. Restart the phone after updates.
Also check the vehicle manufacturer’s official infotainment update instructions. Some updates are installed by a dealer; others use a manufacturer-approved USB drive or over-the-air process. Follow the instructions for the exact head-unit model.
Avoid sideloading old APK files, uninstalling system updates, or downgrading Google packages as a general fix. Older community answers may mention those steps, but they are not universally safe or necessary and can create additional compatibility or security problems. Use them only if current, device-specific instructions from Google or the vehicle manufacturer explicitly direct you to do so.

When to contact the vehicle manufacturer or dealer
Escalate the problem when:
- the vehicle or stereo is absent from the compatibility information;
- another compatible phone fails in the same vehicle;
- the vehicle clock cannot retain the correct time;
- the infotainment system repeatedly reboots or loses its USB connection;
- the problem began immediately after an infotainment update;
- the same phone works normally in another vehicle; or
- the vehicle needs a model-specific firmware update, service bulletin, or replacement USB module.
Give support the exact error number, vehicle model year and trim, head-unit or stereo model, Android phone model and Android version, connection type, cable used, and the results of your phone-and-cable swap tests. That information can prevent support from repeating generic reset steps.
Fixes that are usually a waste of time
- Buying a wireless adapter immediately: it cannot make an incompatible vehicle support wireless Android Auto and may not resolve a vehicle-side fault.
- Using a charge-only USB cable: Android Auto needs a reliable data connection.
- Pairing only for Bluetooth audio: calls and music over Bluetooth do not necessarily activate Android Auto.
- Sideloading old Android Auto packages: this can introduce security and compatibility problems and is not a universal solution.
- Using Windows repair software: PC-focused utilities such as Outbyte do not repair the phone-to-vehicle Android Auto connection chain.
Quick checklist
- Park the vehicle and turn on the infotainment system.
- Record the complete error message or number.
- Confirm whether the connection is wired or wireless.
- Verify exact phone, vehicle, trim, head-unit, and wired/wireless compatibility.
- Restart the phone and fully power-cycle the infotainment system.
- For wired Android Auto, test a known-good USB data cable and the correct data port.
- For wireless Android Auto, forget both pairings and reconnect with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled.
- For Error 8, correct the vehicle date, time, time zone, and daylight-saving setting.
- For Error 12, prioritize the cable, USB port, and vehicle response tests.
- Install official phone and vehicle updates only.
- Escalate repeated vehicle-side failures with your test results documented.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fix Android Auto Communication Error 8?
Communication Error 8 usually indicates an authentication problem, and an incorrect date, time, time zone, or daylight-saving setting on the vehicle head unit is a likely cause. Correct the clock, restart the infotainment system and phone, then reconnect. If the clock keeps resetting, contact the vehicle manufacturer.
How do I fix Android Auto Communication Error 12?
For Error 12, try a known-good USB data cable, the vehicle’s designated Android Auto USB port, and a compatibility check. If multiple compatible phones and cables fail in the same vehicle, the USB socket, head unit, or infotainment firmware may need service.
Can a charging cable cause Android Auto communication errors?
No. A phone may charge through a cable that cannot reliably transfer data. Use a cable explicitly described as supporting USB data transfer and match its connectors to the phone and vehicle.
Should I buy a wireless Android Auto adapter?
No. Wireless Android Auto requires a compatible vehicle or stereo, compatible phone, and correct Bluetooth and Wi-Fi setup. An adapter is optional and model-dependent, not a universal solution.
The Bottom Line
Android Auto communication errors are best solved by isolating the connection chain: verify compatibility, distinguish wired from wireless operation, use a genuine USB data cable for wired connections, check the head-unit clock for Error 8, and test another phone or vehicle before blaming the software. If multiple compatible phones and cables fail in one vehicle, the infotainment system or vehicle connection is the likely problem.
