On most Honda motorcycles, the VIN is stamped on the frame near the steering head, but the exact position depends on the model and year. Find the location in that bike’s owner’s manual, then enter the complete 17-character VIN in Honda’s official Powersports recall lookup. Honda says this VIN search identifies vehicle-specific safety recalls that have not yet been completed. Its online archive covers the past 15 years, so it is not a complete lifetime recall history.
What you need to check a Honda motorcycle for recalls
For a recall check on one particular motorcycle, use its full VIN rather than relying on a year-and-model search. Honda describes the VIN search as the most effective way to determine whether a vehicle is subject to a safety recall that has not yet been repaired. The VIN is a 17-character identifier; a partial number or the motorcycle’s engine number is not a substitute.

You will need the motorcycle’s exact model and year to find the right owner’s manual and confirm where to look for the frame stamp. Honda’s manual library lets you search for manuals by model. Honda says manuals for vehicles older than 2010 require contacting the company by email or phone.
Before starting, keep the task in two parts: first identify and read the motorcycle’s frame-stamped VIN; then use that complete number in Honda’s recall lookup. The manual helps with the physical identification step, while the recall page answers whether Honda lists an incomplete safety recall for that specific vehicle. These are related but different jobs. A manual’s VIN illustration does not tell you whether the bike has an open recall, and a model-level recall listing does not confirm that a particular motorcycle is affected.

A small flashlight can be useful if the stamped characters are hard to see, but it is optional. You do not need a special tool to identify the VIN, and a flashlight does not decode the number or determine recall status. Honda’s official manual and recall lookup are the essential resources; a dealer or Honda Customer Relations can help if you cannot identify the stamp or interpret the result.
Where to find the VIN on a Honda motorcycle
Check the frame near the steering head
Honda’s owner-manual examples show the VIN stamped on the frame around the steering head. That is a useful place to begin, not a guarantee that every Honda motorcycle has its VIN in precisely the same position. Frame layouts and manual illustrations vary by model, so use the instructions for the bike’s exact year and model rather than assuming a location based on another Honda.
The number is stamped into the frame, so look for the location indicated by the manual rather than relying on a number printed on a separate component. If the first area you inspect does not match the illustration, do not conclude that the motorcycle has no VIN or that a nearby number must be it. Return to the model-specific diagram and compare the frame location shown there.

Honda identifies the VIN as information needed for vehicle registration and says it may also be needed when ordering replacement parts. If you find a number marked as the engine number, do not enter it in the VIN recall search. The purpose of checking the frame stamp is to make sure the identifier you copy is the vehicle’s VIN, not another number associated with the motorcycle.
Use the owner’s manual to confirm the exact spot
- Identify the model and year. Use the motorcycle’s exact model and year as accurately as possible. The correct manual matters because VIN placement is model-specific, and Honda’s illustrations are not identical for every bike.
- Search Honda’s manual library. Honda provides a model-searchable owner-manual library. Select the manual that corresponds to the motorcycle’s year and model rather than relying on a manual for a similar-looking bike.
- Find the VIN section. Look for “VIN” or “Vehicle Identification Number” in the manual. Follow the illustration to the stamped frame location shown for that model.
- Inspect the frame stamp. Read the characters from the location shown. If visibility is poor, improve the lighting; a small flashlight may help you see the stamp, but it is not required.
- Check that you have the right identifier. Honda manuals identify the VIN separately from the engine number. Make sure the number you are preparing to enter is the frame-stamped VIN, not the engine number.
Honda’s manual library says to email the company or call (866) 784-1870 for vehicle manuals older than 2010. That is especially useful if you cannot find an older manual in the online library or need help confirming which manual matches the motorcycle. Honda’s recall page also lists the same telephone number for Customer Relations.

Take care when copying the VIN. Honda’s recall lookup calls for all 17 characters, so a missing or misread character can prevent you from getting the vehicle-specific result you want. If the stamp is difficult to read, pause and inspect it again rather than filling in a character from memory. The official lookup is only as useful as the VIN entered into it.
How to check Honda motorcycle recalls by VIN
- Copy the full frame-stamped VIN. Honda’s recall page specifies a 17-character VIN search. Copy all characters carefully, and distinguish the VIN from the separately identified engine number.
- Open Honda’s official Powersports recall lookup. Choose the VIN search and enter all 17 characters. Honda also offers year-and-model filters, but those are a general cross-check rather than the best way to check one bike.
- Review the vehicle-specific result. Honda says the VIN/HIN search returns safety recalls specific to the vehicle that have not yet been completed. If a recall appears, contact a Honda dealer or Honda Powersports Customer Relations to clarify the result and arrange the appropriate next step.
- Ask Honda if the result is unclear or the bike is older than the online coverage. Honda says its displayed recall archive covers the past 15 years and directs owners with questions or older recall inquiries to Customer Relations or a local dealer.
Honda’s recall page describes entering the full VIN as the “most effective way” to determine whether a vehicle is subject to a safety recall and has not yet been repaired. In practical terms, use the VIN search when you are checking one motorcycle, because it is designed to return vehicle-specific information about incomplete safety recalls. Do not stop at a general year-and-model result if you have the VIN available.
Honda lists Customer Relations at (866) 784-1870, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time, on its recall page. A local Honda dealer is another route for questions about a particular motorcycle. Contact one of these routes if you do not understand a result, need information older than the online coverage, or want assistance with a listed recall.
The online result should be understood within its stated scope. It is an outstanding safety-recall check, not a promise that every past campaign or repair record will appear. Honda says the page’s archive covers the past 15 years. If you are checking an older motorcycle or trying to understand a historical recall rather than an incomplete current item, ask Honda or a dealer directly.
VIN lookup versus year-and-model search
Honda’s recall page offers both a VIN/HIN lookup and year-and-model filters. They answer different questions, so choose the search based on whether you are checking one bike or looking for general model information:

| Full VIN | Vehicle-specific safety recalls that Honda says have not yet been completed for that vehicle. | Checking a particular motorcycle. This is Honda’s recommended, most effective route for determining whether that vehicle has an outstanding safety recall. |
| Year and model | General recall information that may apply to some vehicles in a population; Honda warns that it may not apply to the particular motorcycle. | A general cross-check, especially when you do not yet have the VIN. Do not treat a model-level result as proof that your bike is affected or unaffected. |
A year-and-model result can flag an issue worth investigating, but it cannot establish the status of a specific bike. A recall may concern some motorcycles in a model population without applying to every individual motorcycle. Honda’s warning is why the year-and-model search should be treated as general information rather than a final answer about one bike.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConversely, for one motorcycle, use the complete VIN search rather than stopping at a model-level result. The VIN route is intended to identify incomplete safety recalls specific to that vehicle. If you do not yet have the VIN, a year-and-model search can be a preliminary cross-check, but return to the VIN lookup once you can read the frame stamp.
What a Honda recall result does—and does not—show
The VIN lookup is focused on safety recalls that have not yet been completed for the vehicle. It is therefore an outstanding-recall check, not a full record of every recall ever associated with that motorcycle. A completed recall may not appear as an open item, and Honda’s online archive is limited to the past 15 years.
That distinction matters when a seller or owner asks for the bike’s “recall history.” A clean VIN result means the Honda lookup did not return an applicable, incomplete safety recall within the coverage it provides. It does not establish that the motorcycle has never been recalled, that all older recall information is present online, or that every repair-history detail is documented there.
In other words, “no open recall returned” and “no recall has ever existed” are not interchangeable conclusions. The first describes what the VIN lookup returned within its scope. The second is a lifetime-history claim that the online archive does not support, because Honda says it covers the past 15 years and focuses on safety recalls that have not yet been completed. For older information or questions about what a result means, contact Honda Powersports Customer Relations or a local dealer.

Honda lists the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall site as an additional resource. For a Honda-specific question about an older recall or an unclear VIN result, Honda identifies Customer Relations and local dealers as contact routes. The Honda lookup remains the direct route described for checking an individual motorcycle using its VIN.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Entering the engine number. The engine number and VIN are separately identified; Honda’s vehicle recall search calls for the VIN. Start with the manual’s frame illustration and copy the stamped VIN.
- Using an incomplete number. Honda specifies a 17-character VIN search. Check that you have copied the complete frame-stamped identifier before submitting it.
- Searching with only a model and year. Honda warns that a year-and-model result can concern some vehicles in a group without applying to the particular bike. Use the full VIN for a vehicle-specific check.
- Assuming every model’s VIN is in the same place. Honda manual illustrations differ. Confirm the location in the manual for the exact model and year.
- Treating the online archive as a lifetime record. Honda states that its displayed recall coverage is for the past 15 years. Ask Honda or a local dealer about older information.
- Assuming a result proves repair history. The VIN lookup is described as showing safety recalls that have not yet been completed; it is not presented as a complete history of every recall or repair.
- Reading a population-level result as a vehicle-specific verdict. Year-and-model information can concern only some vehicles in a population. Use the VIN lookup to check the particular motorcycle.
- Assuming a missing online result settles an older-bike question. The displayed archive has a stated 15-year coverage period. A result from the online page is not a complete answer to a question about older recall information.
If you cannot complete the lookup
If the VIN stamp is hard to locate, return to the correct owner’s manual and follow its illustration rather than guessing from another motorcycle. If the number is difficult to read, improve the lighting and inspect the frame stamp carefully; a small flashlight can help, but do not substitute the engine number. If you do not have the manual for a pre-2010 vehicle, Honda says to email or call for help finding it.
If the characters are clear but the online search does not give you an answer you can interpret, confirm that you entered the complete 17-character VIN and selected the VIN search rather than relying on year-and-model filters. Honda says the VIN/HIN result is the vehicle-specific route for safety recalls that have not yet been completed. If the question remains unclear, contact Customer Relations or a local Honda dealer instead of drawing a conclusion from a general model result.
If the motorcycle predates the online archive’s stated 15-year coverage, or you are seeking information about an older recall, contact Honda Powersports Customer Relations or a local Honda dealer. Honda lists Customer Relations at (866) 784-1870, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time, on its recall page. Honda’s manual library separately directs owners of vehicles with manuals older than 2010 to email or call the company.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the VIN on a Honda motorcycle?

How do I check recalls on my Honda motorcycle by VIN?
Copy the complete 17-character frame-stamped VIN and enter it in Honda’s official Powersports recall lookup. Honda says the VIN/HIN search returns vehicle-specific safety recalls that have not yet been completed.
Can I use the engine number for a Honda recall lookup?
No. Honda identifies the VIN separately from the engine number, and its lookup asks for the VIN. Use the frame-stamped VIN shown in the owner’s manual.
Is a year-and-model recall search enough to check my bike?
No. Honda says year-and-model results are general information that may concern some vehicles in a population and may not apply to your motorcycle. Use the full VIN to check one specific bike.
Does a clean Honda VIN lookup mean my motorcycle has never had a recall?
No. The lookup focuses on safety recalls that have not yet been completed, and Honda’s online archive covers the past 15 years. A result with no open item is not a complete lifetime recall or repair history.
What if my Honda motorcycle is older than the recall archive?
Honda says the online recall archive covers the past 15 years. For older recall information or an unclear result, contact Honda Powersports Customer Relations or a local Honda dealer. Honda lists Customer Relations at (866) 784-1870, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
