The right Tesla repair shop depends first on the job: warranty-covered service, routine non-warranty work, and collision or structural repairs follow different rules. In the US, check Tesla’s current shop status, confirm the facility can perform the specific work on your model, and get the repair scope, parts plan, estimate, and timeline in writing before authorizing repairs.

Choose the right kind of repair provider

Tesla’s US collision support materials distinguish four provider types. Their labels are not interchangeable, and a shop that can order Tesla parts is not automatically Tesla-approved or equipped for every repair.

Provider What Tesla says What to verify
Tesla Collision Center Tesla-owned facilities can perform cosmetic fixes, light collision work, and full structural repairs. Confirm the specific location handles your repair type and ask how to schedule. Tesla directs owners to use the Tesla app.
Tesla Preferred Collision Center Tesla lists this as a distinct provider category. Confirm the location’s current status and the precise work it is authorized and equipped to perform.
Tesla Approved Collision Center These facilities are independently owned and operated; Tesla says they have factory training and tooling to repair Tesla vehicles to original specifications. Check Tesla’s current listing and ask which technicians will handle the job and whether they have the equipment and procedures for your model and repair scope.
Other collision center Tesla says any independent repairer can order Tesla parts for collision repair and maintenance. Parts ordering alone does not establish Tesla approval, access to every restricted part, or capability for structural repairs. Ask for evidence of relevant training, equipment, and procedures.

Use Tesla’s Collision Support page to check provider information, then contact the shop directly. Availability and services are location-specific; do not assume every center offers the same work or a loaner vehicle.

Match the shop to the work

Warranty-covered service

Tesla’s US Vehicle Warranty FAQ says warranty-covered service must be performed at a Tesla Service Center. Schedule through the Tesla app and confirm that the concern is being handled as a warranty claim before approving any chargeable work. Read the warranty document for your vehicle because coverage depends on its terms.

Non-warranty repair or maintenance

For work that is not covered by warranty, Tesla says owners may use a Tesla Service Center or a preferred non-Tesla service center. Tesla also says it is not responsible for issues caused by improper third-party repair or maintenance. That is not the same as saying that using an independent shop automatically voids the entire vehicle warranty: if a later problem arises, coverage depends on the applicable warranty terms and whether the repair caused or contributed to it.

Collision and structural repairs

For collision damage, choose based on the repair scope and the shop’s ability to follow the applicable model- and year-specific procedures—not just its name or proximity. Tesla’s Collision Support page describes Tesla-owned centers as able to handle cosmetic, light collision, and full structural work, but you should confirm the exact capability at the location.

Structural procedures have specific safety requirements. Tesla’s guidance for 2025 Model Y structural work requires new Tesla parts, Tesla-approved fasteners, and Tesla-approved structural adhesives, and warns that used, recycled, alternative, aftermarket, or third-party replacement parts may compromise vehicle integrity and occupant safety. That instruction is specific to the cited Model Y procedure; ask the shop to identify the applicable repair procedure for your vehicle rather than generalizing it to every repair. Tesla’s 2024+ Model 3 collision repair manual likewise advises using technicians with the knowledge, training, and equipment to repair Teslas to Tesla standards and advises repairs at Tesla-authorized facilities.

Questions to ask before authorizing work

  • Status and staffing: What is the facility’s current Tesla status, and which technicians will work on the car?
  • Scope and procedure: Does the shop perform this type of repair on your exact model and year? Which Tesla repair procedures and equipment apply?
  • Parts and materials: What parts will be used, and how will the shop meet applicable requirements for fasteners and structural adhesives?
  • Written estimate: Can you get an itemized estimate and written repair scope, including any work that may require a supplement?
  • Insurer coordination: Who submits supplements and obtains insurer approvals, and what happens if the insurer’s initial estimate differs from the shop’s findings?
  • Schedule and logistics: What parts or approvals could delay the job, what is the expected timeline, and what transportation options are actually available?
  • Repair warranty: What workmanship warranty does this shop provide, what does it cover, and who handles a claim if a problem appears after pickup?

These are comparison questions, not evidence that one provider category is always cheaper or faster. Tesla’s cited pages do not rank individual shops or establish comparative prices, wait times, or customer satisfaction.

Understand the warranty on the repair itself

Tesla’s US warranty page describes a Parts, Body & Paint Repair Limited Warranty that generally covers qualifying parts for 12 months or 12,500 miles, whichever comes first, with exceptions for certain categories. The terms apply to parts purchased from Tesla or installed by Tesla Service or a Tesla Collision Center; do not treat this as a general workmanship warranty for every independent shop. Ask the repairer for its own written warranty and review the applicable terms at Tesla’s Vehicle Warranty page.

Find service information and arrange an appointment

  1. For a Tesla collision facility: Check the facility information through Tesla Collision Support, confirm the location offers your required repair, and schedule through the Tesla app.
  2. For warranty-covered service: Use the Tesla app to schedule with a Tesla Service Center and describe the issue clearly.
  3. For repair procedures or DIY information: Tesla’s service portal offers repair and maintenance resources, including guides, service manuals, parts catalogs, and wiring diagrams. These resources do not substitute for confirming that a shop has the training and equipment needed for the work.

The cited warranty and collision guidance is US-focused. If the vehicle or shop is outside the United States, check the regional Tesla support and warranty terms, along with local rules on repair choice and insurance.
