For a long EV trip, use a route planner set to your actual vehicle to choose charging stops, then confirm each critical station’s access, connector compatibility, and current status with its operator. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fueling Station Locator is useful for finding candidate public chargers, including along a route, but its listings are not a guarantee that a charger is available or open to you when you arrive.
Start with your vehicle, route, and charging needs
Enter your real starting point and destination in a route planner, and select the vehicle you will drive. The car’s usable range, charging connector, and charging capabilities affect which stops are practical. If you use a separate app, set its vehicle and plug filters before choosing stations; PlugShare’s guide describes saving a vehicle, creating a trip, and filtering locations for compatible plugs.
Compare planners by whether they account for your vehicle and connector, include third-party charging networks, estimate battery level at each stop, show availability or outages, and let you add lodging or other stops. Also check whether the planner works in your region and whether it needs mobile data. No single source cited here establishes that one planner includes every station or guarantees live uptime.
- DOE Alternative Fueling Station Locator: Search by location or along a route. It includes public and private stations, so check access restrictions before treating a listing as a usable stop.
- PlugShare: Its trip-planning guide covers route creation, vehicle plug filtering, range estimates, station selection, and saved trips.
- A Better Route Planner (ABRP): Associated Press consumer guidance identifies it as an EV route-planning app and website with stop-level battery estimates. Check its current functions and availability in your region.
- Your car’s navigation: Features vary by model, software, and market. Consult the current manual for your vehicle rather than assuming its built-in planner includes all public networks.
Find candidate public chargers and confirm they will work
Use the DOE locator to identify stations near your route, then verify the details that determine whether you can actually charge there. A station shown on a map may be private, limited to customers or residents, closed at certain hours, or incompatible with your vehicle.

- Check that the site is open to the public and accessible during your planned arrival.
- Confirm the connector works with your car. If an adapter is involved, verify that your vehicle and the charging network support that combination.
- Check whether you need an account, an app, or vehicle authorization to start a session.
- For Tesla Superchargers, access for non-Tesla vehicles varies; confirm eligibility and compatibility for your particular car and location with the operator.
Plan realistic legs and a reserve
Do not plan every leg around the maximum range printed for your vehicle. PlugShare’s 2022 trip-planning guide suggests estimating usable range at about 85–90% of maximum range and recommends arriving with 10–15% battery remaining. These are PlugShare’s planning suggestions, not universal engineering thresholds. Its estimate does not account for pathing, elevation, road, or weather conditions, so leave additional margin when conditions or the next charger make a missed stop costly.
For each leg, consider the route’s actual distance, your expected arrival charge, and whether there is another reachable charger if the first choice is unavailable. PlugShare puts the rationale plainly: “You should always have some percentage of charge to protect your battery and account for unexpected battery use.”

Match charging stops to how long you will be parked
For driving legs, the cited consumer guidance recommends DC fast charging. Level 2 charging is often a better fit when the car will be parked for several hours or overnight. Associated Press advice based on Edmunds guidance gives 20–45 minutes as an approximate charging-stop expectation, not a promised duration. Actual time depends on the vehicle, charger, starting battery level, temperature, and the car’s charging curve.
Choose a stop based on the charge you need for the next leg, not a fixed number of minutes. A route planner’s charge-time estimate can help with scheduling, but it is still an estimate; check the car’s and charger’s capabilities before relying on it.

Check live status and keep a backup within range
Shortly before departure, check the charging network’s app for the status of each critical station. A map listing does not establish that a charger is currently working or unoccupied, and busy periods can mean a queue. When possible, identify a backup station for each important stop and make sure you can reach it with the charge you expect to have left.
Network apps such as Electrify America, EVgo, and ChargePoint can be useful for checking their own stations. If a stop is essential, confirm its access and compatibility as well as its reported status; a backup is only useful if your vehicle can use it and you have enough range to get there.

Look for charging at your overnight stop
Hotels and other lodging may offer on-site charging, often Level 2. Search a station map or ask the property directly, then confirm that the charger is open to guests, compatible with your vehicle, and available during your stay. Do not rely on an overnight charge solely because a map associates a charger with a hotel.

Built-in routing can help adjust a plan as you drive, but its coverage is vehicle-specific. Tesla’s official support recommends using Trip Planner on long journeys for recommended stops and charge times based on driving. Tesla’s U.S. Model Y manual says third-party charging locations can be enabled for display but are not automatically included in Trip Planner and may need to be added manually; its documentation also describes arrival-energy estimates, predicted Supercharger conditions, and rerouting around Supercharger outages. These functions are examples for particular Tesla vehicles and markets, not features to assume in every EV.
