What New York City’s curbside charging network looks like
NYC DOT’s current EV page reports 88 public curbside Level 2 charging points. These are installed at street-side locations rather than inside a private garage and are intended to give drivers without dedicated home parking a way to recharge. The city’s August 4, 2026 expansion announcement also uses 88 as the existing-network count.

You may still see a count of 100 on other official city pages. The Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) FAQ and NYC311 retain that older figure. The difference is a conflict among publication dates and counting methods, not evidence that every listed point is operating. When a current number matters, use the 88 points reported by the latest NYC DOT materials and treat the 100 figure as an older count still appearing on some pages.
The existing curbside network is managed by FLO. NYC DOT describes the units as charging by the hour and says drivers can start a session with a smartphone or by tapping a credit card. The exact screen prompts and accepted payment methods can vary by unit, so the instructions displayed on the charger or in the current network app control at the time you arrive.

How to find a station before you drive
Start with the city’s location list
NYC DOT’s EV page lists curbside locations by street segment and borough and links to the city’s broader charging map. Use that list to understand where a station is supposed to be, then open the individual map entry for navigation. A published location is not a promise that a port is vacant, powered, or communicating with the network when you reach it.
Check more than one map or app
The TLC FAQ identifies several services that can help locate public chargers: PlugShare, the FLO EV Charging App, EV Connect, Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Waze. Coverage and status details differ among services. Check the listing closest to your departure time and, where possible, look for a recent status update or a second source before committing to a long drive.
Because the official location list does not establish live availability, plan a backup. Choose a second curbside point nearby or identify a municipal lot, garage, or DC fast-charging site along your route. This matters most when your remaining range is too low to reach another neighborhood safely.
Match the plug to your vehicle
NYC DOT says the current curbside units use the SAE J1772 connector, which works with most battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Tesla owners can use these stations with the adapter supplied with every Tesla vehicle, according to DOT. If your car uses another inlet or you are uncertain whether an adapter supports both the vehicle and the charger, confirm compatibility with the vehicle manufacturer before relying on that station.
Step-by-step: using a NYC curbside charger
- Choose a location and verify its status. Open the NYC DOT charging map or a charging app, check the listing close to arrival, and note a backup location. A map pin by itself does not prove that a port is available or working.
- Confirm connector compatibility. Make sure your vehicle accepts J1772 or that you have the manufacturer-approved adapter needed to connect. Keep the adapter in the car if you routinely depend on public Level 2 charging.
- Read the sign before entering the space. Pull into a space marked for EV charging and inspect the sign, curb markings, meter, and any nearby parking instructions. These spaces are reserved for EVs that are actively charging; parking there without charging can result in a ticket.
- Connect the vehicle. Park so the charge port can reach the cable without stretching it across a travel lane or sidewalk. Plug the J1772 handle firmly into the vehicle and check the car’s dashboard or charging indicator for a connected status.
- Start the session using the unit’s current instructions. Follow the prompts on the charger or in the network app. NYC DOT says existing curbside customers can use a smartphone or tap a credit card, while the city identifies FLO as the network manager. If the display directs you to a different activation method, follow that direction rather than relying on an older app workflow.
- Confirm that energy is flowing. Look for a charging indicator on the vehicle and a session confirmation on the charger or app. An illuminated plug icon without an energy-delivery message may mean the connector is latched but the session has not started.
- Monitor the session and your parking time. Level 2 charging is slow enough that you may be away from the car for several hours, but you remain responsible for the space and any posted time, meter, or street-parking limits. Set a reminder to return before the session or allowed parking period ends.
- End the session and clear the space. Stop charging through the charger, app, or vehicle controls as instructed, unlock the connector if necessary, return the handle to its holster, and move the car as soon as charging is complete or the posted limit requires it.
How long curbside Level 2 charging takes
Curbside units in the existing network are Level 2, not DC fast chargers. The TLC describes a full Level 2 charge as taking about four to eight hours. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed session length: battery size, the vehicle’s onboard charger, starting state of charge, temperature, and the station’s delivered power all affect the result. A plug-in hybrid with a smaller battery may finish sooner, while a large battery-electric vehicle may need longer.

Level 2 is best suited to an overnight stay, a workday, or another planned stop rather than a quick highway-style top-up. If you need to add substantial range during a short break, look for a DC fast charger at a city-owned facility or another public site instead of assuming a curbside unit can meet that schedule.
What charging costs—and what is not yet published
NYC DOT’s current curbside information does not publish a numeric rate in dollars. It says the existing network charges by the hour. The August 2026 expansion announcement says prices for the new curbside network have not yet been determined and that drivers will be able to pay per kilowatt-hour dispensed through multiple apps or by tapping a credit card.

Check the live price shown by the charger or its current app before beginning a session. Do not treat a rate displayed on an old blog post, a cached map entry, or a different city facility as the price for the space in front of you. A municipal lot or garage may also add a parking charge, and a street meter or other parking fee can apply separately.
Historical pilot pricing is not a current tariff
NYC’s 2023 pilot evaluation recorded earlier terms: activation through the FLO app or an RFID method, $2.50 per hour from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and $1.00 per hour overnight. The pilot charged for the time the vehicle was plugged in. Those figures describe the pilot period and should not be used as today’s price without confirmation on the live service.
The same evaluation said pilot spaces carried “Electric Vehicle Charging Only” signs and that noncompliant drivers faced a $95 fine at that time. The report is historical; verify the current sign and enforcement rule at the space rather than assuming the old amount still applies.

Choosing among curbside, municipal, and DC fast charging
NYC offers more than one public-charging setting. The right choice depends on how much energy you need, how long you can stay, and whether you also need a legal parking space.
| Option | Speed and dwell time | Connector and availability | Fees and activation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Curbside Level 2 | About four to eight hours for a full charge according to the TLC; actual time varies by vehicle and conditions. | Existing units use SAE J1772. Check a live map or app because a listed port may be occupied or offline. | NYC DOT describes hourly charging. Current numeric rates are not published on the DOT page; use the charger’s current instructions. Smartphone and tap-to-pay are supported on the existing network. | Overnight, workday, or other extended street stops, especially for drivers without home parking. |
| Municipal lot or garage Level 2 | Similar Level 2 charging characteristics; plan for a multi-hour stay. | DOT lists public Level 2 chargers at municipal lots and garages. Confirm the specific connector and live status in the listing. | Parking charges and charger fees may both apply. Check the facility’s posted terms and current listing. | When you need a guaranteed parking facility or the curbside spaces nearby are occupied. |
| DC fast charging | Much faster than Level 2, though the actual rate tapers as the battery fills and varies by vehicle and charger. | Available at some city-owned facilities and other public sites; verify the vehicle’s fast-charging compatibility and the station’s connector. | Fees and any parking charge depend on the facility. Confirm current terms before plugging in. | Adding meaningful range during a short stop or continuing a trip without a four-to-eight-hour dwell. |
Neither a faster charger nor a cheaper-looking energy rate automatically makes a trip cheaper. Include the time and cost of parking, the distance to the station, and the likelihood that you will have to wait for an occupied port.
Parking rules and enforcement at the curb
The charging space is not a general-purpose EV parking permit. NYC DOT and NYC311 state that a vehicle must be actively charging in a signed EV charging space. Leaving a car in the space without a charging session can lead to a ticket. The pilot evaluation’s $95 figure is historical, so read the current sign and consult current city rules for the applicable penalty.
Charging does not cancel ordinary street-parking requirements. NYC311 specifically says that meter rules and other posted restrictions continue to apply. Pay a meter when the sign requires it, observe alternate-side or cleaning restrictions, and honor any time limit even if the vehicle remains connected. A charging session that continues after your legal parking period is over does not make the parking lawful.
Before walking away, photograph or note the sign, meter instructions, charger number, and session start time. This gives you a practical record if the display is unclear or the app later shows a different location.

If the charger is occupied, offline, or will not start
The space is occupied
Do not wait in a travel lane or block a driveway for a port to open. Use the backup location you identified before leaving. If another vehicle is parked in the signed space but is not charging, do not confront the driver; rely on the city’s enforcement channels and move to a legal alternative.
The map says available, but the port is not usable
Map data can lag behind real conditions. Inspect the unit for an error message, damaged cable, blocked connector, or an out-of-service notice. Try another port at the same station if one is available, then report the problem through the network’s current support channel and update your route.
The connector fits but charging does not begin
Re-seat the J1772 handle, confirm that the vehicle is in Park, and repeat the activation sequence shown on the charger. Check that the app selected the correct station and port, or try tap-to-pay if the unit offers it. If the vehicle reports an adapter fault, stop and contact the manufacturer rather than forcing the connection.
The session stops early
Check both the vehicle and charger displays for a fault code, then follow the unit’s restart or support instructions. Record the station ID and time. If the battery is still below the range needed for your trip, use a confirmed alternative rather than assuming a second restart will work.
What NYC’s 2026 expansion will change
On August 4, 2026, NYC DOT announced a plan to add 600 curbside charging points over three years, growing the network from the 88 existing points to nearly 700. The announcement identifies proposed focus areas in Soundview and Unionport in the Bronx; Rego Park, Forest Hills, and Far Rockaway in Queens; Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, and Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn; the Upper West Side and Washington Heights in Manhattan; and Stapleton on Staten Island.

Those neighborhoods are planned focus areas, not a list of operating stations. A proposed site can change before construction, and the release does not establish a date when each location will open. Use the live city map to distinguish an operating charger from a project announcement.
NYC DOT says each new station is planned to have at least two posts, with two charging points on each post. The department will operate and maintain the new chargers. Pricing for the expansion remains to be determined, with the release describing future payment by multiple apps or tap-to-pay per kilowatt-hour dispensed. Residents can submit feedback on proposed sites through the project portal named in the announcement.
Why demand is high
NYC DOT reported that existing curbside points were occupied by an EV more than 70% of the time, with some points reaching close to 99% occupancy. It also reported that an occupied point was actively delivering energy more than 85% of the time. These are figures from the department’s August 2026 announcement, not an independent audit of every station or a guarantee that a particular port will be free.
The same announcement said EVs accounted for 8.3% of new vehicle registrations in New York City and that half of the city’s car owners rely on street parking. Those conditions explain why curbside charging is valuable and why a driver should build in time for an occupied or unavailable port.
A practical planning checklist
- Open the NYC DOT map and at least one current charging app before departure.
- Check live status shortly before you reach the neighborhood; do not rely solely on the published street address.
- Confirm J1772 compatibility or carry the vehicle manufacturer’s approved adapter.
- Save a second station, a municipal Level 2 facility, or a DC fast charger as a fallback.
- Read the EV-space sign and meter before parking.
- Start the session with the charger’s current app, smartphone, or tap-to-pay instructions.
- Verify that the car is actually receiving energy, not merely connected.
- Track both charging progress and the posted parking limit.
- Stop the session, return the cable, and vacate the space when charging or legal parking time ends.
Bottom line for NYC drivers
For a dependable curbside-charging trip, treat the station as a planned stop rather than an guaranteed parking space: verify it near arrival, bring the right J1772 connection, and keep a backup. Existing units are Level 2 and generally require a multi-hour stay. Use the price and payment terms displayed at the live charger, because current numeric rates and the future expansion tariff are not established on the city’s current public pages. The curbside space is legal only while your EV is actively charging and all other street-parking rules are satisfied.
