How to Evaluate Autonomous Trucking Services for Freight Shipments

A lane-by-lane framework for checking whether an autonomous trucking service fits your freight, what to verify about safety and operations, and which terms to get in writing.

Evaluate an autonomous trucking service against the exact shipment and lane you need—not its advertised network. Before booking, establish the route and shipment eligibility, which trip segments are actually autonomous, what happens when conditions fall outside the system’s operating domain, who is accountable at each handoff, and what the written offer guarantees. Public launch announcements show that some driverless freight operations exist on named routes; they do not prove that a service is available for your freight or suitable for your schedule.

What an autonomous freight service actually includes

“Autonomous trucking” can describe only one segment of a shipment. The truck may operate without an onboard driver on a defined highway portion, while people handle pickup, terminal movements, inspections, transfers, or driving outside that portion. The service may also rely on remote support or switch to manual operation under certain conditions. A provider’s use of “driverless” does not, by itself, describe every stage from pickup through delivery.

FMCSA’s model operational safety plan illustrates why the whole operating chain matters: it describes an unoccupied vehicle on a limited-access highway, a technician inspecting the vehicle after it exits the highway, and manual driving, CDL operation, or teleoperation at a warehouse. The plan is a model, not proof that any particular provider uses those arrangements. It does show why a shipper should map the people, vehicles, locations, and responsibilities involved across the trip.

Start by drawing the service as a sequence: pickup, yard exit, highway segment, highway exit, transfer or terminal, and final delivery. For every segment, record who operates or supervises the vehicle, who has authority to intervene, where the freight changes hands, and who is responsible if a vehicle or shipment problem arises.

How to assess lane and shipment fit

Ask the provider to confirm your actual origin, destination, route, pickup and delivery windows, and terminal plan in writing. A named public route—or a provider’s general network map—is not evidence that your locations, timing, or particular load are eligible. Treat service availability as a lane-and-shipment-specific question.

Confirm the route and operational boundaries

  • Which exact roads and route segments are included? Are the ramps, urban approaches, yards, and terminals at both ends included or handled by another operator?
  • What locations or road types are excluded, and can a dispatch change take the truck outside the supported route?
  • What pickup and delivery windows are supported? Is the service offered at the time of day your load requires?
  • What happens if roadworks, traffic, a closure, or a diversion changes the planned route?

FMCSA describes an operational design domain (ODD) as the environmental, geographic, time-of-day, and other conditions in which a system is designed to operate. Traffic and roadway characteristics matter, and operation can differ with the immediate ODD. Request the written ODD for the specific service being offered, rather than relying on a broad description of the truck or technology.

Check environmental and roadway conditions

  • Which weather and visibility conditions are covered, and what thresholds lead to a restriction, human takeover, delay, or stop?
  • How does the service handle construction zones, unusual traffic patterns, incidents, and other roadway conditions?
  • Are there limits involving time of day or particular road classes?
  • Where does the vehicle go, and who makes the decision, if conditions leave the written ODD?

Do not settle for a general assurance that the system can handle “most” conditions. Ask for the condition, trigger, and operational response that apply to your lane. If the provider cannot give a clear answer, treat that as an unresolved service boundary in your procurement decision.

Verify that the freight is eligible

Confirm the equipment and load requirements explicitly. Ask whether the offer accepts your trailer type, payload, commodity, temperature-control needs, hazardous-material classification, and freight-security requirements. The available public materials do not establish general cross-provider eligibility rules, so do not infer acceptance from a provider’s broader freight activity.

Also clarify whether the autonomous operator covers the full trip or only a highway segment. Identify any conventional trucking, transfer, or other handoff that completes the shipment, and whether the quoted schedule includes time for that handoff.

Establish what “autonomous” means for this shipment

Ask for the operating mode of every contracted segment. The truck could be driverless on one portion, have an onboard operator on another, receive remote support, or be driven manually for terminal and local movements. These modes have different implications for staffing, timing, contingency handling, and accountability.

  • Segment: Where does autonomous operation begin and end? Give the exact handoff locations.
  • People: Is there an onboard operator, a remote operator, a technician, or a conventional driver at each stage? What qualifications and responsibilities apply?
  • Fallback: If the system cannot continue within its ODD, does it slow or stop, request assistance, transfer to human operation, or follow another defined procedure?
  • Recovery: Who responds if the truck stops on the road, cannot reach a terminal, or needs inspection before continuing?

NHTSA identifies system safety, ODD, object and event detection and response, and fallback to a minimal risk condition as important automated-driving safety elements. Ask how these apply to the proposed operation, including what the truck does when it cannot safely continue. “Minimal risk condition” is not a delivery plan: the provider should explain the follow-up steps, responsible party, and likely shipment consequences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the safety case and operating controls

Request the provider’s safety case and ask which evidence it can share for the operating domain and service being offered. Review the vehicle technology and the carrier’s operating system together. FMCSA’s model plan identifies vehicle design, build, operation, maintenance and inspection, as well as human training, qualifications, location, and hours of service, as factors that affect carrier safety management.

Questions for the provider

  • System and fallback: How does the provider address system safety, detection and response, vehicle redundancies, and a fallback when the system cannot proceed?
  • Maintenance and inspection: Who maintains and inspects the truck, at which points in the operation, and how are defects handled before the vehicle resumes service?
  • People and staffing: Who is trained or qualified to operate, supervise, inspect, dispatch, or recover the vehicle? How are their roles and hours managed?
  • Incidents and emergencies: Who receives incident reports, coordinates emergency response, communicates with the shipper, and manages cargo recovery?
  • System changes: How are changes to the system or operating procedures managed after deployment, and how would a change affect the ODD or service being offered?
  • Cybersecurity: What cybersecurity processes are relevant to the operation, and how are issues that could affect dispatch, vehicle operation, or shipment information handled?

These questions are not a substitute for the provider’s detailed safety documentation. They help identify whether a safety claim is supported by defined operating procedures and accountable roles, rather than being limited to a claim about the vehicle’s driving capability.

Separate vehicle safety from carrier oversight

NHTSA addresses automated-driving-system safety, while FMCSA is the lead federal agency for commercial motor-vehicle operational safety oversight, including hours of service, drug and alcohol rules, hazardous materials, and vehicle inspections. Ask both who is responsible for the vehicle and which entity is the regulated motor carrier. Clarify who owns or maintains the truck, who dispatches it, and who is accountable at each transfer point.

FMCSA’s Automated CMV Evaluation program describes federal hands-on research into safe deployment of advanced driver-assistance systems, automated driving systems, and cooperative driving automation in commercial vehicles. That research is useful context, but participation in or reference to federal research is not certification or approval of an individual provider’s freight service.

Check carrier records without treating one metric as a verdict

Verify the carrier’s identity, current operating authority, safety rating, insurance, and relevant records. Confirm that the company named in the offer is the entity taking the carrier role, rather than assuming the technology provider, broker, fleet owner, and carrier are the same party.

FMCSA cautions that Safety Measurement System (SMS) performance data should not be used by itself to draw a conclusion about a carrier’s overall safety condition. SMS supports intervention prioritization; it is not the same as a federal safety rating. Treat it as one screening input, alongside authority, rating, insurance, safety documentation, maintenance practices, and controls for the particular shipment.

FMCSA’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability page stated that its data were current as of September 25, 2026, and that the page was updated October 5, 2026. Records can change, so check the relevant carrier information again during procurement rather than relying on a saved result or a provider’s description of its status.

Evaluate delivery performance and contingency handling

Request operating history for the lane and shipment class you are considering. Ask for the sample period, number and type of shipments, definition of on-time performance, exclusions, cancellations, weather impacts, and how delays are attributed. A percentage without these definitions cannot be compared reliably with your existing carrier’s results.

Compare an autonomous offer with a conventional alternative on the same lane, freight profile, service window, and definitions. The public agency and provider materials available here do not provide a standardized, independent cross-provider comparison of performance. Label provider-supplied operating metrics as self-reported unless an independent audit or other suitable verification is available.

Compare actual offers on the same shipment

When you have two or more written options, use one comparison sheet and require each provider to answer against the same origin, destination, shipment details, and schedule. “Not stated” is a useful finding: it identifies a term that needs clarification rather than inviting a guess.

Comparison area What to record

Read the contract for responsibility, cost, and remedies

Before committing freight, establish which party contracts as carrier or broker and who bears responsibility for every leg and transfer. The contract should match the operational map: if one company handles the autonomous highway segment and another handles pickup or delivery, the documents should make clear who is accountable when a handoff fails or cargo is damaged.

Ask the provider to state the complete rate structure and the assumptions behind it. Review fuel and accessorial charges, minimum volume, capacity allocation, cancellation terms, and remedies for missed pickup or delivery commitments. Confirm cargo liability, insurance, claims handling, shipment-data access, service-level commitments, and termination rights. The available sources do not establish current provider quotes or contract terms, so these points must be resolved directly in the offer and reviewed by procurement or counsel.

What public commercial examples do—and do not—show

Public examples can establish that a provider has reported commercial activity on a particular lane, but they do not establish current bookable capacity, shipper eligibility, independent performance validation, or a broader service footprint.

Provider-reported example What was reported What it does not establish
Aurora, May 1, 2025 announcement Aurora said it had begun regular driverless customer deliveries between Dallas and Houston, named Uber Freight and Hirschbach Motor Lines as launch customers, and reported more than 1,200 driverless miles at that milestone. Current capacity, access for every shipper, independently validated performance, or availability on another lane.
Aurora, October 28, 2025 shareholder letter Aurora reported launching a Fort Worth–El Paso driverless lane and passing 100,000 driverless public-road miles. An independently verified mileage total, a market-wide statistic, or a direct performance comparison with another provider whose mileage may be defined differently.
Aurora, second-quarter 2026 shareholder letter Aurora described additional customer and logistics relationships, including freight activity involving Aurora Driver-powered trucks. A neutral or complete comparison of providers, or comparable availability, capacity, performance, price, and eligibility across the market.

These are company-reported examples and figures. Use them as evidence of what Aurora reported at the cited time, not as an independent service evaluation or a current guarantee for a shipper’s load.
