To estimate how far an EV can travel at a chosen highway speed, divide the battery energy available for the trip by the vehicle’s energy consumption at that speed. In symbols: range (miles) = available battery energy (kWh) ÷ consumption (kWh per mile). If the consumption figure is in miles per kWh, multiply available kWh by that figure instead. The estimate is only as relevant as its inputs: an EPA combined-range label is a standardized comparison, not a promise of range at 60, 70, or 80 mph.
Start with the energy the trip can actually use
An EV’s range is an energy-budget calculation. The numerator is the battery energy available for the journey; the denominator is how much energy the vehicle uses to cover each mile under the conditions being estimated. For example, if 60 kWh is available and the vehicle-specific rate at the planned speed is 3 miles per kWh, the arithmetic estimate is 180 miles. This is an illustration of the formula, not a measured result for a particular car or speed.

Use usable battery capacity rather than gross pack capacity when the two differ. Gross capacity describes the battery pack as a whole; some of that energy may not be available to the driver. If the manufacturer or vehicle documentation gives a usable capacity, use that value. If you know only the amount of charge available for the trip, estimate energy from the usable capacity and the portion of the battery you intend to use.
For example, a charge window can be represented as a fraction of usable capacity: usable kWh multiplied by the fraction available for the drive. A planned window from 80% down to 20% represents 60% of usable capacity, before allowing for any additional reserve. Do not apply those percentages to gross capacity unless gross and usable capacity are known to be the same for that vehicle.

Make the units match before dividing
Consumption may be reported as kWh per mile, kWh per 100 miles, Wh per mile, or miles per kWh. Convert the value to match the formula rather than mixing units:
- kWh per 100 miles: divide by 100 to get kWh per mile. A rate of 30 kWh/100 mi is 0.30 kWh/mi.
- Wh per mile: divide by 1,000 to get kWh per mile. A rate of 300 Wh/mi is 0.30 kWh/mi.
- Miles per kWh: multiply available kWh by mi/kWh. At 3 mi/kWh, 60 kWh yields 180 miles by the formula.
When the consumption rate is in kWh per mile, divide energy by that rate. For instance, 60 kWh divided by 0.30 kWh/mi is 200 miles. That result is not interchangeable with the 180-mile illustration above: the assumed efficiency differs.
Find consumption for the speed you plan to drive
The most useful input is the EV’s own consumption at the target speed, under conditions resembling the trip. A general model-specific average can be a starting point, but a rate observed at a different speed, on a different route, or in different weather may not represent the drive being planned. A combined EPA figure can provide context, but it does not tell you the car’s consumption at every constant highway speed.

Use vehicle-specific information when available
Look for a consumption rate reported by the vehicle for the relevant journey or driving conditions, or use repeated observations from similar drives. For an observation to be useful, note the speed and the conditions that may have shaped it: route, temperature, HVAC use, elevation, wind, precipitation, tires, and payload. The closer those conditions are to the upcoming drive, the more directly the rate can inform the estimate.

If you use a trip-computer result, check what distance and energy interval it covers and whether it reflects the kind of driving you want to estimate. A mixed city-and-highway average is not a constant-speed highway result. A short observation may also reflect unusual traffic, weather, or terrain; do not treat one number as a universal property of the vehicle.
Keep the estimate tied to its assumptions
Write down the consumption rate with its units and context rather than carrying a bare number into the calculation. “0.30 kWh/mi” is more useful when paired with the speed, route type, temperature, and HVAC assumptions behind it. If the available data are for a different speed or conditions, say so and treat the result as an approximation rather than claiming a precise speed-specific prediction.
There is no universal percentage adjustment supported for every EV, speed, weather pattern, and route. Headwind, elevation change, cold or hot weather, precipitation, tire choice, payload, and cabin heating or cooling can change consumption. Apply a numerical adjustment only when there is vehicle- and condition-specific evidence for it; otherwise, make the uncertainty explicit and plan conservatively.

There are two practical starting points. Vehicle-specific consumption is more relevant to a chosen speed when the data match the trip. EPA combined data are easier to find and useful for standardized comparisons, but they blend driving conditions and do not resolve a particular highway speed.

|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicle-specific observed or reported consumption | Energy use for that vehicle over the measured or reported driving interval | Estimating a chosen speed when the observation reflects similar speed and conditions | Its relevance depends on the vehicle, route, weather, HVAC use, and observation interval matching the planned trip |
| EPA combined range or consumption | A standardized US city-and-highway comparison figure | Comparing labeled vehicles or building a broad baseline when speed-specific data are unavailable | It is not a rate for one selected constant highway speed |
The U.S. Department of Energy reported that model-year 2024 combined-cycle consumption across models ranged from 1.49 to 4.17 mi/kWh. DOE attributed the figures to DOE and EPA FuelEconomy.gov data files accessed October 2, 2024. This wide spread illustrates why a generic efficiency assumption can mislead; those values are combined-cycle figures, not highway-speed test results for any one EV.
How EPA range relates to highway speed
EPA range figures in the United States come from defined laboratory procedures, not a guarantee that a driver will travel that distance at a chosen speed. EPA describes testing an EV on a dynamometer using established cycles. A fully charged vehicle is driven separately over the city cycle and highway cycle until it can no longer drive; manufacturers may also use an optional multi-cycle procedure.
EPA then applies adjustments intended to reflect real-world influences that the laboratory procedures do not capture, including air conditioning, cold temperatures, and high-speed or aggressive driving. EPA describes a common adjustment factor of 0.7: its example turns a 200-mile highway laboratory result into an adjusted 140-mile result. The adjusted city and highway results are weighted 55% and 45%, respectively, to create the combined label range. These are US testing and labeling details; for a particular car, check its current label and model-year data.
The EPA label also reports energy consumption in kWh per 100 miles for combined city and highway driving. That figure helps compare vehicles and estimate energy use or cost over a distance, but it is not the vehicle’s consumption at every constant highway speed. Dividing usable energy by the label’s combined consumption can produce a broad baseline calculation; it cannot turn the label into a 60-, 70-, or 80-mph result.

MPGe is another label figure, but it should not be mistaken for battery capacity or a speed-specific efficiency rate. EPA uses 33.7 kWh as the energy-equivalence convention for one gallon of gasoline when calculating MPGe. It is a conversion convention for the comparison measure, not a statement that an EV has that much energy available for a trip.
Calculate a range estimate step by step
- Set the trip’s usable energy. Find the vehicle’s usable battery capacity or the usable energy available in the planned charge window. Subtract or reserve energy you do not intend to spend reaching the destination.
- Choose the target speed and conditions. Record the expected highway speed and relevant conditions, including route, weather, HVAC use, elevation, tires, and payload.
- Find the best matching consumption figure. Prefer vehicle-specific data for similar driving. If you have only kWh/100 mi or Wh/mi, convert it to kWh/mi; if it is in mi/kWh, use the multiplication form of the formula.
- Calculate distance. Divide available kWh by kWh/mi, or multiply available kWh by mi/kWh. Keep the units visible so a conversion mistake is easier to catch.
- Label the result honestly. State the speed, energy available, consumption rate, and relevant assumptions. If the rate comes from combined EPA data or a different driving condition, identify it as a baseline rather than a speed-specific forecast.
- Plan a margin for the journey. For trip planning, include a reserve rather than treating the calculated distance as a target to reach with an empty battery. Choose the reserve according to route uncertainty, charging access, and the consequences of arriving short; no universal reserve percentage is established.
Worked arithmetic example
Suppose a driver has 60 kWh available and a vehicle-specific consumption figure of 3 mi/kWh for conditions resembling the planned drive. The estimate is 60 × 3 = 180 miles. If the driver wants to preserve some of the available energy, the calculation should use only the energy allocated to driving, not all 60 kWh. The result remains conditional on the consumption rate holding under the trip’s actual conditions.
The same calculation with a rate in kWh per mile is 60 ÷ 0.30 = 200 miles. These examples are not competing test results: 3 mi/kWh equals about 0.333 kWh/mi, whereas 0.30 kWh/mi equals about 3.33 mi/kWh. Always calculate from the rate you actually have.
Estimate the effect of a different highway speed
To compare 60, 70, and 80 mph, you need a separate consumption figure for each speed—or another reliable vehicle-specific method that supplies those figures. Calculate each case with the same available-energy assumption, then compare the resulting distances. Do not infer the loss from one speed to another using a universal rule: official sources do not establish a generic percentage reduction for every EV or a validated speed-by-speed curve.

A useful comparison keeps everything except the speed-related consumption input constant. That makes the arithmetic easy to interpret, but the real drive may also differ in wind, temperature, terrain, traffic, or HVAC demand. If those factors change between observations, the difference cannot confidently be attributed to speed alone.
| Comparison input | What to keep consistent |
|---|---|
| Available energy | Use the same usable kWh or charge window for each speed case |
| Consumption rate | Use a rate for the specific speed, with the same units across cases |
| Conditions | Record route, temperature, wind, precipitation, HVAC, tires, payload, and elevation where known |
| Reserve | Apply the same planned reserve to every case, rather than comparing one full-battery result with one reserve-adjusted result |
If you do not have rates at multiple speeds, the honest answer is that a precise speed-to-speed loss is not established for the particular vehicle and trip. You can still calculate a baseline from available data, but label the gap instead of presenting a guessed 70-mph range as fact.
Understand why a real trip may differ
EPA’s consumer information explicitly notes that driving style and conditions, including hot and cold weather, affect EV range. Its range-testing explanation identifies air conditioning, cold temperatures, and high-speed or aggressive driving among factors considered in adjustments to laboratory results. A trip estimate should therefore be read as conditional on its inputs, not a fixed capability independent of how and where the car is driven.

Cold-weather figures deserve careful interpretation. EPA’s consumer page, accessed in 2026, says researchers found average range could decrease about 40% because of cold temperatures and use of heat, citing a Nature Energy study dated September 22, 2022. That is an average finding, not a universal adjustment for an individual trip. It does not establish that a particular EV will lose 40% at a specific temperature, speed, or HVAC setting.
Other trip conditions matter because they can change the energy used per mile or the amount of energy available for the drive. A headwind or route with elevation gain may differ from a calm, level route; precipitation, tires, extra payload, and HVAC demand also belong in the assumptions. Without matching vehicle-specific data, account for them qualitatively and avoid converting them into unsupported percentage corrections.
Diagnose an estimate that looks wrong
- The result is implausibly high or low: check whether usable capacity was confused with gross capacity, whether kWh/100 mi was divided by 100, and whether Wh/mi was divided by 1,000. Confirm that the chosen operation matches the units.
- The dashboard predicts something different: the dashboard estimate and your calculation may use different consumption histories, energy assumptions, or trip conditions. The EPA combined label is also not a speed-specific forecast. Compare like with like before concluding that either figure is wrong.
- The estimate uses a label figure: identify whether it is combined range, combined kWh/100 mi, or another value. Combined EPA figures are useful baselines, but they do not specify consumption at the chosen highway speed.
- The observed rate varies from one drive to another: compare speed, route, weather, HVAC, tires, payload, and elevation before treating the difference as an efficiency change attributable to one cause.
- The trip plan has little margin: recalculate using only the energy you are prepared to spend, then consider route uncertainty and charging availability. A formula result is not a reason to plan to arrive with no reserve.
What to include when sharing a range estimate
A range number without assumptions is difficult to evaluate or reuse. Include the vehicle and model year when known, usable energy allocated to the drive, the consumption rate and units, the target speed, and the conditions that matter to the trip. State whether the figure is observed vehicle-specific consumption, a reported vehicle figure, or an EPA combined baseline. Mark an estimate as approximate when its inputs do not match the journey.
For example: “Estimated distance is 180 miles using 60 kWh available and 3 mi/kWh observed for similar highway conditions; actual distance may differ with weather, route, HVAC, and speed.” That makes the calculation auditable without suggesting that the estimate is guaranteed or applies to every EV.
