How to Diagnose Starting Problems on the Bajaj Pulsar 150 and TVS Apache RTR 160

If a Bajaj Pulsar 150 or TVS Apache RTR 160 will not start, first distinguish a silent or weak starter from normal cranking without ignition. Then check controls, fuel and the manual for your exact variant.

If your Bajaj Pulsar 150 or TVS Apache RTR 160 will not start, first note whether the starter is silent, clicks or turns slowly, or cranks the engine normally without it firing. Those different symptoms guide your first checks, but none proves a particular part has failed. Start with the controls and fuel, follow the procedure in the manual for your exact year and variant, and stop if you find a leak or an abnormal mechanical sound.

Identify the exact bike before following a procedure

Starting controls and specifications vary by model year, market, variant and fuel system. An Apache RTR 160 4V manual, for example, is not automatically applicable to every Apache RTR 160; similarly, the Pulsar 150 manuals available from Bajaj cover distinct versions. Check the motorcycle’s year and variant, whether it is carbureted or fuel-injected, and the manual that matches it. If you cannot establish which manual applies, ask an authorized dealer or service center rather than transferring a procedure or part specification from another version. Bajaj lists separate Pulsar 150 Single Disc and Twin Disc manuals on its owner’s manual page; TVS has a vehicle user manual page for its models. Availability and coverage may vary by market.

First check what happens when you press the starter

The starter is silent

Check that the ignition is on and the engine-stop switch is in the run position. Confirm the gearbox is in neutral; if you are starting in gear, pull in the clutch. Raise the side stand if your bike’s starting interlock requires it. The cited Pulsar manual says its ECU disables cranking when the side stand is down and the bike is in gear. The cited TVS Apache RTR 160 4V manual instructs riders to check the engine cut-off switch, neutral and clutch lever when the bike is in gear. These details are version-specific: do not assume every year or market has the same interlock logic.

If the starter remains silent after these checks, do not bypass a switch or interlock. A fault in the starter controls or circuit may need a technician to diagnose.

Compatible with Flooded, AGM, GEL, and EFB batteries. Not for lithium batteries, non-12V batteries (6V/8V/24V), or motorcycles below 30Ah. For 6V testing, choose BA101 Plus. For 24V testing, choose BA101 PRO

There is a click or the engine turns slowly

A click or slow cranking makes battery condition and electrical connections reasonable first checks, but it does not confirm that the battery is the cause. Lights that appear dim, a battery’s age, or one failed start are not a substitute for testing. If you can safely inspect the battery, look for an obviously loose connection or damage without bridging terminals. Do not run the motorcycle with its battery disconnected.

The cited Bajaj Pulsar 150 manual specifies a 12 V, 4 Ah VRLA battery for the version it covers and advises charging a discharged battery promptly. Confirm the specification and charging instructions in your own manual; do not apply that battery rating to every Pulsar or Apache. If the battery repeatedly discharges, have the battery and charging system checked rather than repeatedly charging it and assuming the issue is solved.

The engine cranks normally but does not start

Move on to fuel level, the correct cold- or warm-start procedure, and routine ignition and air-intake maintenance. Check the fuel level directly rather than relying only on the gauge. A normal cranking sound does not establish whether fuel delivery, spark or another system is at fault; remote checks cannot isolate every cause across these model generations.

Use the correct starting procedure

For a cold engine

Follow the instructions for your exact bike. The retrieved TVS Apache RTR 160 4V manual version recommends using the choke for a cold start if the motorcycle is equipped with one, with no or minimal throttle. Once the engine runs steadily, return the choke to its normal position. It says not to use the choke when the engine is warm or hot. Do not try this procedure on a fuel-injected version or any motorcycle without a choke control.

That TVS manual also describes setting the fuel cock to ON or Reserve according to the available fuel. This applies only to a version with a fuel cock; a fuel-injected variant may not have one. No blanket Pulsar 150 cold-start procedure is established here, so use the Pulsar manual matching your motorcycle.

Keep cranking attempts short

Do not hold the starter button continuously. The cited Pulsar 150 manual version specifies two 5-second cranking attempts with 2-second disabled intervals, followed by another 5-second crank and a 10-second pause. Those timings belong to that manual version, not to every Pulsar 150 or Apache RTR 160. Follow the limits in your own manual and release the starter as soon as the engine starts. For the cited TVS manual, the starting guidance also calls for avoiding excessive throttle.

Inspect routine maintenance items only if it is safe

Spark plug

A worn, dirty or incorrectly specified plug can be relevant to a no-start, but inspection alone may not explain the fault. Let the engine cool before removing a plug, use the correct tool, and keep away from ignition leads while cranking. If you are unsure how to remove or assess it safely, leave the work to a technician.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the Pulsar 150 version covered by the cited Bajaj owner’s manual, the specified plugs are two CHAMPION RG4HC plugs, with a gap of 0.7–0.8 mm; the manual also describes cleaning the plugs. This is not a universal Pulsar 150 specification and must not be applied to an Apache. The cited TVS 160 4V manual says to inspect and clean the spark plug if necessary, but the exact part and adjustment depend on the version. Check your exact manual before buying or adjusting a replacement plug.

Fuel line and air filter

Bajaj’s BS VI Pulsar 150 Single Disc / Twin Disc manual includes fuel-line connections and leakage, spark plugs and air-filter cleaning among its maintenance checks. If you see fuel leaking, smell strong fuel, or notice a damaged line, do not attempt improvised fuel delivery or keep trying to start the bike. Arrange qualified service. Do not open fuel-system parts or bypass safety switches as a shortcut.

When to stop and get professional diagnosis

Arrange service if the basic control and fuel checks do not restore starting, a warning indicator or error message appears, you find a fuel leak, the engine cranks with an abnormal mechanical sound, or the battery keeps discharging. A technician can determine whether the issue lies in the battery or charging system, starter circuit or interlocks, ignition, fuel delivery or injection, or engine condition. The manuals cited here do not establish a single likely-cause ranking that applies across all years and variants.

What the manuals do—and do not—tell you

Starting check Bajaj Pulsar 150 manual evidence TVS Apache RTR 160 manual evidence
Interlocks The cited version says cranking is disabled by the ECU with the side stand down and the bike in gear. The cited 160 4V version says to check the engine cut-off switch, neutral and clutch lever when starting in gear.
Cranking guidance The cited version gives timed 5-second attempts and rest intervals; follow those only if this manual matches your bike. The cited version says to release the starter once started and avoid excessive throttle.
Cold start No blanket procedure is established here; consult the exact Pulsar manual. The cited 160 4V version describes choke use for a cold engine if fitted and minimal or no throttle.
Spark plug Two CHAMPION RG4HC plugs and a 0.7–0.8 mm gap are specified for the version covered by the cited manual. Inspect and clean if needed; exact plug part and adjustment depend on version.
Battery The cited version specifies 12 V, 4 Ah VRLA; verify against your own manual. Confirm the specification in the exact manual; do not transfer the Pulsar figure.

These are differences between the cited manual versions, not a reliability comparison or evidence that one motorcycle is more likely to fail.
