For a new rider choosing between the current listed base models, the Bajaj Pulsar 150 is the more defensible default if a lower listed price and an accommodating everyday ride matter most. The TVS Apache RTR 160 2V is the performance-leaning option: its current comparison listing shows more peak power and less weight. But “Apache RTR 160” can also mean the substantially different 4V, so identify the exact variant before comparing prices, safety equipment or performance. Sit on and test-ride the specific trims you can buy locally; neither displacement nor a published seat height can tell you which bike you will manage more confidently.
Which one is better for a beginner?
For a rider prioritizing price and a calm, comfortable everyday experience, start with the Pulsar 150. For a rider who prefers a lighter bike and stronger listed performance, consider the Apache RTR 160 2V. These are starting points, not universal beginner verdicts: fit, clutch and throttle response, braking equipment, local price and the exact trim can matter more than peak power.

There is an important evidence limit. The independent head-to-head road test available here compared an earlier Bajaj Pulsar P150 with an Apache RTR 160 2V, not the 2026 Pulsar 150 or the current Apache 4V. Its ride impressions and test results are useful historical context, not proof of how today’s versions perform.

Apache RTR 160 4V
The 4V is a distinct model, not simply another name for the 2V. TVS specifies a 159.7 cc, four-valve, oil-cooled engine, a five-speed gearbox and ride modes. The official specification lists 17.55 PS in Sport mode at 9,250 rpm and 14.73 Nm at 7,500 rpm; Urban and Rain modes are listed at 15.64 PS and 14.14 Nm. Output figures describe the manufacturer’s specifications, not a beginner’s real-world experience.
TVS lists an 800 mm saddle height and a 12-litre tank for the 4V. Kerb weight is listed as 143 kg for single-channel ABS variants and 146 kg for higher variants. Equipment depends on trim: the official page lists single-channel ABS on the base trim and dual-channel ABS on specified higher trims, as well as telescopic or USD forks by variant. Check the exact version rather than assuming the full range shares the same equipment. TVS Apache RTR 160 4V specifications
TVS announced a 2026 4V update on March 30, 2026, including projector headlamp, all-LED lighting and assist-and-slipper clutch availability across the range, alongside an existing TFT variant. The launch announcement listed the updated 4V range from ₹1,25,440 ex-showroom Delhi; that is a dated Delhi launch-price snapshot, not a current quote for every city or trim. How do the listed base models compare?
The following is a snapshot from a third-party comparison listing last updated October 2, 2026. Prices are ex-showroom listings, and mileage is claimed—not a current independent test of these exact variants. City, trim and dealer quotation can change the amounts you actually pay. Bajaj Pulsar 150 vs TVS Apache RTR 160 comparison listing
| Listed detail | Bajaj Pulsar 150 Single Disc Single Seat | TVS Apache RTR 160 2V RM Drum Black Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Ex-showroom price in listing | ₹1.15 lakh | ₹1.21 lakh |
| Claimed mileage in listing | 47.5 km/l | 47 km/l |
| Listed peak power | 14 PS at 8,000 rpm | 16.04 PS at 8,750 rpm |
| Listed kerb weight | 141 kg | 137 kg |
On these listed base versions, the Pulsar costs less and has marginally higher claimed mileage; the Apache has more listed power and is 4 kg lighter. Those figures do not establish which bike is easier to control at walking pace, more comfortable on your roads or safer in your hands. The listing is not a substitute for a local on-road quote or a test ride.

What did the earlier road test find?
Autocar India’s comparison tested an earlier Pulsar P150 against an Apache RTR 160 2V. In that test, the Apache accelerated faster: 0–60 km/h took 4.8 seconds versus 6.33 seconds for the P150, and 0–100 km/h took 17.37 seconds versus 21.13 seconds. The testers described the P150’s engine as refined and tractable, while noting vibration from the Apache at mid-to-upper revs.
The same test recorded 60–0 km/h braking distances of 16.90 m for the P150 and 19.76 m for the Apache tested. It praised the Pulsar’s braking feel and bump absorption, and characterized the Apache as agile and flickable but less settled over bumpy roads at higher speeds. These are results and impressions from those particular test bikes and conditions; they do not establish how current versions will behave. Autocar India’s Pulsar P150 and Apache RTR 160 2V comparison
Fuel-economy results from that test also depend on bike, mode and conditions. The tested Apache returned 53.1 km/l in Urban mode in city use and 46.44 km/l on the highway in Sport mode; the author separately cited 48.5 km/l for the Apache in Sport mode in city use. The tested P150 returned 43.41 km/l in the city and 48 km/l on the highway. These test figures should not be treated as guaranteed mileage or compared as though they came from one identical riding mode and route.

How should a new rider choose?
Check fit and low-speed control
- Sit on each exact variant, ideally in the footwear you will ride in. Check whether you can reach the bars, clutch and brake levers without strain.
- At a standstill, assess how confidently you can stabilize the bike. If the dealer permits it, try rolling it backward and lifting it off the stand.
- On a supervised test ride, pay attention to clutch take-up and throttle response at low speed. Peak power alone does not predict how easy a bike will feel to a particular beginner.
Verify the safety equipment on the trim
Ask the dealer to identify the front and rear brake hardware and the number of ABS channels on the exact bike. This matters particularly for the Apache 4V, whose ABS and suspension equipment vary by trim. A model name alone is not enough to confirm the equipment on the bike being offered.
Match the ride to your roads and priorities
If acceleration and agility are priorities, the 2V has the stronger paper case in the current comparison listing, and the 4V’s manufacturer specifications show higher output. If everyday refinement, comfort and rough-road composure matter more, the earlier road test gives you useful questions to check on a current Pulsar—but not a guarantee of current-model behavior. Take the same route on both bikes if possible, including the low-speed conditions where you will learn and commute.

Compare the real purchase cost
Ask dealers in your city for on-road quotes for comparable trims, with registration, insurance and accessories itemized. The listed base prices and the 2026 Delhi launch price are not equivalent to a current local on-road price. Check stock and any local offers directly before deciding.

Consider local support, not brand-wide assumptions
Dealer and service convenience can affect ownership, but the available evidence does not support a blanket claim that one brand has better service nationwide. Check the dealer and service options near you for both models.
Which should you buy?
Choose the Pulsar 150 as a starting point if the lower listed base price and the earlier test’s comfort and refinement impressions align with your priorities. Choose the Apache RTR 160 2V if its lighter listed weight and higher listed peak power appeal to you and the exact bike feels manageable during a test ride. Consider the 4V as its own alternative: check its trim-specific equipment, current local price and stronger performance specifications rather than treating it as interchangeable with the 2V. Your final decision should come from the fit and equipment of the exact variants available to you, not from a single spec-sheet figure.
