Design a modern automotive electrical and electronic (E/E) system as a lifecycle-managed vehicle platform—not as a collection of isolated ECUs. Start with vehicle functions, hazards and operating modes; choose a topology and power system that fit those needs; then define compute, networks, diagnostics, cybersecurity and update mechanisms before allocating software to hardware.

1. Define vehicle functions, hazards and operating modes

Begin with what the vehicle must do, rather than with a preferred controller or network. Make a function list that covers propulsion, braking, steering, body systems, charging, thermal management, ADAS, connectivity and user features. For each function, define its interfaces and operating conditions as well as its behavior when components or communications fail.

Turn functions into engineering requirements

Record timing, availability, degraded modes, diagnostic coverage and dependencies for each function. Identify which functions must remain available after a fault, which can be reduced or shut down, and what other functions they rely on. Set requirements for serviceability, vehicle variants and software changes after production begins at this stage, so they influence the architecture instead of becoming retrofit problems.

Identify safety goals and protected assets

Use hazard analysis to determine safety goals and the controls needed to meet them. Identify cybersecurity assets and update constraints alongside safety requirements: for example, a connected feature may depend on network access, while a safety-related function may need to remain isolated or available in a degraded mode. These inputs form the basis for topology, power, compute and verification decisions.

2. Choose an E/E topology

Distributed, domain-based, zonal and centralized architectures are design patterns, not a simple maturity ranking. Many vehicles combine them: local controllers handle inputs and outputs, while domain or central computers run larger software workloads. Compare candidate layouts against wiring and connector complexity, latency, deterministic timing, compute use, fault containment, thermal limits, serviceability, reuse across variants and lifecycle cost.

Topology How it is organized Useful when Main trade-off to assess
Distributed ECU Functions are assigned to separate controllers near relevant components or systems. Functions need local control or a program is extending an established ECU layout. As the number of controllers and connections grows, assess harness and connector complexity, duplicated capability and software coordination.
Domain-based Controllers are grouped around functional areas, such as body or powertrain. Functions within a domain share data or compute needs, while separation between domains remains useful. Assess gateway traffic and dependencies between domains, as well as how each domain handles faults and software changes.
Zonal Local zone controllers collect nearby inputs and outputs and may handle local power distribution, linking vehicle regions to higher-level compute. Shorter local connections and a more consolidated vehicle backbone can reduce wiring complexity. Assess zone-controller capacity, thermal and fault-containment needs, and the links between zones and central or domain compute.
Centralized High-performance computers host larger portions of vehicle software, connected to distributed interfaces or controllers. Workloads need concentrated compute or software needs to be deployable across reusable platforms. Assess concentration of faults, compute and thermal limits, network dependencies, and what local control must remain available.

Zonal and centralized designs are part of the software-defined-vehicle transition identified by the European Commission. In a zonal layout, locating I/O closer to sensors and actuators can reduce local wiring runs; it does not eliminate the need to engineer backbone links, gateways, fault handling or service access. NXP’s CoreRide Z248 reference system is one example explicitly aimed at a 48 V zonal architecture, not a universal template for every vehicle.

3. Engineer the power architecture around loads and safety

Choose voltage rails from load profiles, component needs and safety analysis. A 48 V rail can support higher-power loads at lower current than a 12 V rail for the same power, but that does not by itself establish that a vehicle should replace 12 V or distribute every load at 48 V. Consider a mixed architecture where appropriate, and evaluate availability of suitable components, conversion stages, protection and service procedures.

Design choice Potential advantage Questions to resolve
12 V distribution Fits loads and components designed for a low-voltage vehicle rail. Can the rail and wiring meet the current and power requirements of the planned loads, including transient and fault conditions?
48 V distribution For a given power, it can carry less current than a lower-voltage rail. Which loads benefit, and how will conversion, protection, grounding, EMC, component selection and safe service be handled?
Mixed-voltage distribution Allows different rails to serve loads with different voltage and power needs. Where are conversion stages placed, what remains powered after a fault, and how are isolation, grounding and fault responses managed?

Treat power distribution as part of the safety architecture. Specify high-current loads, conversion stages, grounding, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), protection, wake and sleep behavior, and energy reserves. Define load-shedding priorities and the power that must remain available after a fault—for example, to support steering, braking, sensing or communications where the vehicle’s safety analysis requires it.

4. Allocate compute and software to the right platforms

Decide which functions need predictable embedded control and which need high-performance computing. Keep application software portable where practical through stable interfaces and hardware abstraction, but do not assume that every function can be moved freely: timing, safety, hardware dependencies and fault-containment requirements constrain deployment.

Platform Best fit Design emphasis
AUTOSAR Classic Deeply embedded, predictable hard-real-time control and safety-constrained controllers. Deterministic behavior, constrained resources, well-defined interfaces and integration with the target hardware.
AUTOSAR Adaptive High-performance, service-oriented and compute-intensive use cases, including some fail-operational applications such as automated driving. Compute and operating-system requirements, service communication, deployment and update behavior, and safety allocation.

AUTOSAR describes a layered application, runtime environment (RTE) and basic-software model, with application components distributed across ECUs. Its 2023 anniversary publication captures the architectural direction: “Software is no longer bound to specific ECUs, and in fact, often transcends the vehicle.” That does not mean hardware no longer matters; it means software placement and versioning should be managed as platform decisions rather than assumed to be permanently fixed to one ECU.

5. Design networks, diagnostics and fault behavior together

Select CAN or CAN FD, automotive Ethernet, LIN and other links according to bandwidth, timing determinism, synchronization, safety needs and cost. A network choice is not only a throughput decision. It affects gateway design, diagnostics, time budgets, cybersecurity exposure and the vehicle’s response when a link is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Assign message ownership and specify timing budgets, synchronization needs and gateway behavior.
  • Define diagnostics, event logging and the information needed to identify vehicle and software configuration in service.
  • Specify whether each function should fail silent, remain fail-operational, or transition to a defined degraded mode after a communication fault.
  • Reserve suitable network bandwidth and compute capacity for update downloads, telemetry and planned future functions.

Do not make shared networks the only path for a function that must remain available under a fault unless the safety analysis supports that design. Document communication dependencies so they can be traced into fault analysis and system tests.

6. Apply safety, SOTIF and cybersecurity to their distinct scopes

ISO 26262: hazards from malfunction

ISO 26262 addresses hazards caused by malfunctioning safety-related electrical or electronic behavior. Use the vehicle-level safety analysis to derive safety goals, allocate requirements across systems and controllers, and assess architectural safety. Include the hardware metrics and analyses required by the applicable program and standard edition.

ISO 21448 (SOTIF): hazards without a malfunction

ISO 21448, commonly called SOTIF, addresses risks where intended-function performance or specification is insufficient, outside the malfunction scope of ISO 26262. This is especially relevant when sensing, perception or operating limitations can create risk even though components behave as designed. Analyze those limitations and their operating conditions separately rather than treating all safety concerns as component faults.

UNECE R155: cybersecurity management

UNECE Regulation No. 155 makes cybersecurity management and controls for vehicle E/E risks part of type-approval expectations in markets and vehicle categories where it applies. Build threat analysis, secure boot, key management, network segmentation, intrusion monitoring, vulnerability handling and incident response into the architecture and lifecycle processes. The precise approval obligations depend on the applicable market and vehicle scope.

7. Make software updates safe and auditable

Plan updates before production, not as a feature added after the hardware and software interfaces are fixed. UNECE Regulation No. 156 covers software updates and the software-update management system (SUMS). AUTOSAR’s 2023 publication notes that R155 and R156 bring software-version tracking and post-production updates into scope. A vehicle program therefore needs a traceable account of what software is installed and how changes are managed over the vehicle lifecycle.

Specify the update lifecycle

  • Maintain software bills of materials, version identity and dependency information for vehicle configurations.
  • Define how campaign targets are selected and how download integrity is checked.
  • Specify installation preconditions, recovery behavior if an update fails, and rollback where the design supports it.
  • Define post-update validation, including how the vehicle confirms that the intended versions are installed and expected functions are available.
  • Connect update authorization and cybersecurity controls to the vehicle’s key-management and access-control design.

Set update constraints for each function: what must remain powered, which vehicle states permit installation, and what behavior is required if installation is interrupted. The standards establish scope and management expectations; the program must define its own technical recovery behavior and evidence for each system.

8. Verify the architecture at vehicle level

Maintain traceability from vehicle functions to safety and cybersecurity requirements, systems, ECUs, software components, interfaces, tests and field telemetry. Verification should cover interactions across the architecture, not just whether individual controllers pass component tests.

  • Use model-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop testing to check behavior and interfaces early.
  • Use hardware-in-the-loop testing to exercise ECU and network integration, including timing and fault responses.
  • Apply fault injection to confirm degraded modes, fault containment, power reserves and communication-loss behavior.
  • Test EMC and environmental conditions relevant to the vehicle’s operating requirements.
  • Validate cybersecurity controls and update recovery, including interrupted installation and post-update checks.

ISO 26262, ISO 21448, R155 and R156 define scopes and obligations, but they do not provide one universal test schedule for every architecture. Build the verification plan from the hazard analysis, vehicle design and type-approval markets, and retain evidence that links test results to requirements and released software versions.
