The right layout depends on how much shelter you need, how much living space you want to preserve, what power or fuel your equipment requires, and how securely everything packs away for travel.
Choose a kitchen layout that fits how you camp
Volkswagen California models show several ways to balance cooking and living space. They are examples of factory configurations, not universal specifications for every California model year or custom VW conversion. Volkswagen’s descriptions and available equipment can vary by version and market, so confirm the details for the specific van you are considering.
| Layout | Where you cook | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Interior galley | Inside the van | Offers sheltered access to the kitchen, but occupies interior space. |
| Rear or pull-out kitchen | At the rear, outside, or beneath the open tailgate | Keeps more of the living area free, but cooking is more exposed to weather. |
| Hybrid kitchen | Inside or outside, depending on the feature and setup | Can make selected cooking or storage features accessible from outdoors, but the exact arrangement is model-specific. |
Interior galley
A permanent interior kitchen is the straightforward choice when you want to prepare food in a sheltered space. Volkswagen describes California Coast and Ocean summer kitchens with a gas hob, sink, and cool box accessible from inside and outside. A built-in arrangement can also put preparation surfaces and storage close at hand, although the amount of room it uses depends on the van’s design.
Rear or pull-out kitchen
Volkswagen describes a pull-out kitchen module on the Caddy California and newer California Beach Camper. The gas stove and worktop can be used outdoors or beneath the tailgate, leaving more of the interior available for other use. A rear gas hob on the Beach Camper is another example of cooking at the back of the van rather than relying only on an indoor galley.

Hybrid access
A hybrid layout makes some kitchen functions reachable from outdoors while retaining indoor facilities. Volkswagen’s California kitchen information describes an all-new California setup with a sink, sliding induction hob, gas hob, and fridge accessible from outside. Treat these as model-specific descriptions: they do not establish that every van offers the same equipment or access points.
Compare the trade-offs before choosing
For an older VW or a custom conversion, think of the factory examples as design patterns rather than a fitment guide. Compare the setup against the way you expect to use the van:
Rank #2
- PORTABLE: Easy addition to the campsite, picnic, roadside, and more
- TWO WIND GUARDS: Help shield and protect burners from wind
- HEAVY-DUTY LATCH: Easy to open and keeps the stove closed when not in use
- EASY TO CLEAN: Durable, chrome-plated grate is removable for easy cleanup
- IMPROVED KNOB ROTATION: For precise temperature and simmering control of two independently adjustable burners
- Cooking location and shelter: Decide whether you need to cook indoors, are comfortable using the rear under the tailgate, or prefer an outdoor station beneath an awning. An awning can provide cover, but it does not make an outdoor-only appliance suitable for indoor use.
- Interior space: A pull-out kitchen can preserve room inside; a permanent galley is ready to use without setting up a separate station.
- Energy source: VW examples include gas and induction. Suitability depends on the installed equipment and the actual power system in your van.
- Work surface and storage: Consider where food preparation happens and where cookware and other loose items will go when you are driving.
- Setup and pack-down: Check how the hob, table, and equipment deploy, then plan where each item is secured for travel.
Set up an outdoor cooking area
A portable induction cooktop can be part of an outdoor setup if the appliance’s requirements match the van’s electrical system and there is an appropriate place to use it. Volkswagen describes cooking outside with an induction plate connected to an integrated 230V socket on a California. That example does not establish that every VW camper has a suitable socket, sufficient electrical capacity, or weather protection for a particular portable unit. Check the cooktop instructions and the van’s equipment before relying on this arrangement.
Volkswagen’s California material also describes a sliding induction hob on the all-new California. That is an installed, model-specific feature, not proof that a portable cooker can be connected or used in the same way in other vans.

- Use a folding camping table for preparation or dining when the campsite setup needs a separate surface. Volkswagen advises placing its folding table on firm, even ground.
- Keep cookware and preparation items organized so the work surface can be cleared and the equipment packed away without leaving loose items in the van.
- Secure tables and chairs while the vehicle is moving, following Volkswagen’s product safety guidance.
Volkswagen’s California kitchen descriptions include examples of a worktop, cookware storage, and a sink with a fresh-water tank. These can help keep meal preparation compact, but they should not be assumed to be present in every conversion.
Use gas appliances safely
Check whether a gas appliance is designed for indoor use or for outdoor use only. Energy Safe Victoria warns that outdoor LPG-fuelled appliances can cause carbon monoxide poisoning where ventilation is insufficient and says not to use them inside a tent, caravan, campervan, or canvas annex. An open window does not make an outdoor-only camping stove appropriate for indoor use. This is safety guidance from Victoria, Australia; it is not a complete summary of every jurisdiction’s rules.

Use only equipment appropriate for the intended location, and follow the appliance maker’s instructions and the rules that apply where you are camping. Volkswagen’s general winter-camping advice mentions cross-ventilation and taking hot food in a flask for the road; that advice does not change the restriction on using outdoor-only gas appliances indoors.

A kitchen that works at camp also needs a clear pack-away routine. Before setting off, make sure the table, chairs, cookware, and other loose equipment are stowed securely. Volkswagen’s product safety information specifically advises securing tables and chairs while the vehicle is moving.
