Ask each dealer for a dated, itemized total price for the same car and configuration, before discussing financing. Compare the selling price, fees, local taxes and registration, insurance, optional add-ons, and—separately—the full cost of any loan. A discount headline or low monthly payment alone cannot show which offer costs less.
“On-road price” is common in India; US consumer guidance generally uses “out-the-door price.” The terms are not a universal legal formula: what is included, and how charges are treated, depends on the location.
Start with the same car and a written total
Two quotes are comparable only if they are for the same make, model, trim, powertrain, model year, and included factory options. Also check that any discount or incentive applies to you; a headline price may depend on eligibility or conditions.
Before visiting or discussing a loan, ask each dealer for a dated written quote or itemized buyer’s order. The FTC advises US buyers to request an out-the-door price in writing so they can compare offers, remove unwanted products, and spot extra charges. See the FTC’s guide to car dealer ads and promotions.

Ask the dealer to show these items separately:
- Vehicle selling price, discounts, and incentives, with eligibility conditions.
- Each dealer-imposed fee or market adjustment.
- Government taxes and title or registration charges for the location where you will register the car.
- Insurance provider, coverage, and premium, if insurance is included in the offer.
- Each optional product or accessory and its price.
- The final amount due before financing.
Labels and line items differ by dealer and location. If an offer bundles charges, ask for a breakdown rather than comparing only the stated total.
Separate government charges from dealer charges
Taxes, title, and registration depend on where the car will be registered. Do not assume that an online estimate or a quote from another location gives the correct amount. In US consumer-finance guidance, government-set taxes, title, and registration charges are not negotiable; check the relevant authority for the actual figures. The CFPB explains which parts of a car purchase or auto loan may be negotiable.
Rank #2
Dealer-imposed charges are a different category. In US FTC pricing guidance published in September 2026, a fee the dealer requires every consumer to pay must be included in the advertised price; the described rule allows government-required charges to be excluded. The FTC’s example says a vehicle advertised at $40,000 with a mandatory $85 document fee must be advertised at $40,085. This is a US-specific illustration, not a rule to apply in India or elsewhere. Read the FTC’s automobile pricing transparency FAQs.
For India, Parivahan’s permanent registration guidance identifies tax payment and vehicle documentation as part of registration. It does not provide one current on-road total for every state and union territory, so verify the applicable charges where you will register the vehicle.
Price insurance by equivalent cover, not premium alone
If insurance appears in a quote, compare the insurer, coverage, terms, and premium. A cheaper premium is not automatically a better offer if the cover differs. In India, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India says third-party liability insurance is mandatory for vehicles on public roads and advises consumers to compare premiums on insurer websites. See its motor insurance policyholder guidance.
Make optional add-ons visible
Ask the dealer to identify every proposed add-on, give its individual price, and say whether it is optional. A bundled package can make the car appear cheaper while raising the amount due, or make a product’s price difficult to see. Compare only the products you actually want, and consider their prices separately from the car.
In US guidance, dealers must not misrepresent optional products as required. The FTC also says dealer-required fees must be reflected in advertised pricing under its 2026 guidance. These are US-specific consumer protections; do not assume the same legal rules apply in another jurisdiction. The FTC’s pricing FAQs and financing and leasing advice explain the US context.

First compare each offer’s total before financing. Then assess the loan on its own terms: interest rate or APR, loan term, fees, down payment, amount financed, and total amount repaid. The FTC warns US car shoppers not to focus only on the monthly payment; a longer term can lower that payment without lowering the overall cost. The CFPB also identifies interest and add-on products as factors that affect what a vehicle costs. See the FTC’s financing or leasing a car guidance and CFPB’s explanation of factors in a car’s price.
Best Value
Keep the vehicle price and loan comparison distinct. A dealer may present a discount alongside financing conditions, or adjust the financed amount with products and fees. Ask for the cash total and full loan terms in writing so you can see what is driving each figure.
Check the contract against the quote
Before signing, compare the final contract with the written offer, line by line. If a charge appears for the first time, an amount changes, or an add-on is included that you did not request, ask the dealer to explain it and provide an updated itemized total. This is a practical way to catch last-minute changes; the precise legal requirements depend on your jurisdiction.
