How to Clean Car Touchscreens and Piano-Black Trim Safely

Use a clean microfiber cloth, but let your car’s manual determine whether its touchscreen can be dampened or needs a display-care product. Piano-black trim may have different instructions.

Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth and follow your vehicle’s manual for the screen and trim separately. Some displays must be cleaned dry; others allow a lightly dampened cloth or a specified display-care product. Never spray or pour liquid directly onto a touchscreen, and do not assume glass cleaner, alcohol, polish, or wax is safe.

Why the screen and trim need different instructions

A touchscreen and piano-black trim may sit side by side, but their care instructions are not necessarily the same. Automakers specify different methods for different displays and finishes. Renault’s EASY LINK guidance, for example, distinguishes screen types that should be cleaned dry from types that permit a slightly moistened microfiber cloth. Mercedes-Benz’s cited EQS manual calls for a suitable TFT/LCD display-care product on that display, while its trim guidance permits soapy water on piano-lacquer-look trim. Those directions apply to the cited systems and finishes—not to every car.

Start by checking the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle, display, and trim. If it does not clearly permit a liquid or cleaning product, do not assume that a product safe for the trim is safe for the screen, or vice versa. The safest general starting tool is a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth, used gently.

The practical distinction is that “clean the interior” is not one instruction for every surface. A vehicle may have multiple display types, touch buttons, glossy panels, genuine wood, or other trim elements, and a manufacturer may give each its own care method. Even examples from the same automaker should not be mixed indiscriminately: the cited Mercedes-Benz EQS display instructions and piano-lacquer-look trim instructions address different surfaces and prescribe different methods. Read the relevant sections rather than choosing one method for the whole dashboard.

Manufacturer examples are useful for understanding the range of instructions, not as substitutes for your own manual. Renault’s EASY LINK directions depend on the screen category. Ford’s 2025 Transit directions address its touchscreen. Volvo’s EX30 support page includes both display-cleaning mode and guidance for glass and glossy surfaces. Each is tied to the named system or vehicle. If another manual differs, follow the directions for that vehicle.

What to use—and what to avoid

For the touchscreen

  • Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth. A cloth used on another surface may carry grit or residue, so choose one that is clean.
  • Follow the display-specific manual: it may call for dry cleaning, a lightly dampened cloth, or a suitable display-care product.
  • Do not spray or pour liquid onto the screen. If the manual permits moisture, apply it to the cloth as directed, not directly to the display.
  • Avoid abrasive materials, scraping, rough cloths, and excessive pressure. Do not use alcohol, household glass cleaner, detergent, solvents, or other products unless the applicable manual specifically allows them.

A microfiber cloth is the basic reusable tool supported across the cited manufacturer guidance. It is not a license to use any liquid with it: the important choice is whether the cloth should be dry, lightly dampened, or paired with a particular display-care product. Use a clean cloth and gentle pressure, and do not add a cleaner simply because the cloth itself is suitable.

There is no universal screen cleaner established by these manufacturer instructions. Mercedes-Benz specifies a suitable TFT/LCD display-care product for the cited EQS display and says not to use other agents. Renault allows different methods depending on EASY LINK screen type and warns against alcohol-based products, household or chemical cleaners, and direct application of liquid. Ford warns against detergent and solvent on the cited Transit touchscreen and against pouring or spraying alcohol onto it. Those differences are exactly why a generic “screen-safe” label or a product used in another car should not override the manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For piano-black trim

Use a soft cloth and the trim-specific instructions. Mercedes-Benz says the piano-lacquer-look trim in the cited EQS manual can be cleaned with a damp cloth and soapy water. Its interior-care guidance also warns against solvent-based cleaners, polishes, and waxes for genuine wood and trim elements. These are model-specific directions; confirm what applies to your vehicle’s finish before using soapy water or another cleaner.

Do not treat piano-black trim as if it were the touchscreen simply because both surfaces are glossy. The EQS example allows a damp cloth and soapy water for the cited piano-lacquer-look trim, while its screen calls for a suitable TFT/LCD display-care product. Conversely, do not assume the trim’s permitted soapy water is appropriate for a nearby screen. Verify both surfaces separately.

The same caution applies to terms such as “piano lacquer,” “glossy trim,” and “genuine wood.” The named guidance covers particular materials and vehicles. If you are unsure what a panel is made of or which manual section applies, do not experiment with solvents, polish, wax, or household cleaner. Identify the finish and follow its own care instructions first.

Step-by-step: clean a touchscreen

  1. Check the vehicle manual. Look for the instructions for the particular display rather than relying on general advice for car interiors. Note whether the screen should be cleaned dry or whether a specified cloth or product is permitted. If the vehicle has more than one display, make sure the directions apply to the one you are cleaning.
  2. Activate a cleaning mode if the manual directs you to. Volvo’s EX30 support guidance says to activate display cleaning mode before cleaning. The feature and its instructions are vehicle-specific. Do not assume another car has the same mode or that you should use a control sequence from a different model.
  3. Switch the display off and let it cool if instructed. The June 2026 US EQS Sedan manual says to switch off the cited display and allow it to cool before cleaning. Do not treat that instruction as universal; follow your own manual. Where your vehicle’s instructions give a preparation step, complete it before wiping.
  4. Remove loose dust gently. Volvo recommends removing loose dirt before wiping glossy surfaces so it is not dragged across them. Use the method your manual recommends, such as dusting or vacuuming around the area. The aim is to avoid wiping loose debris across the surface; do not scrape at it or use a rough brush.
  5. Start with the manual’s approved method. If it says dry, use a dry microfiber cloth. If it permits a damp cloth or a display-care product, use only what it specifies. For a permitted damp method, lightly dampen the cloth rather than wetting the display. Renault expressly says not to pour or spray cleaning product on the screen.
  6. Wipe with light pressure. Use gentle strokes; Volvo’s EX30 directions specify gentle circular motions for the surfaces covered by that guidance. Do not scrape, scrub, or press hard to remove a mark. Ford’s 2025 Transit instructions also describe using a microfiber cloth in a circular motion for dust and fingerprints, but that method is specific to the cited Transit guidance.
  7. Allow the surface to dry as directed. Volvo says to let the cited glossy surfaces dry fully before use. Follow the instructions for your own display. Do not add a second product or polish as a finishing step unless the manual calls for it.

When the manual permits a damp cloth, “lightly dampened” is different from wetting the screen. Dampen the cloth only as directed, and keep liquid off the display itself. Do not spray from a bottle, pour from a container, or assume that a small amount of an unapproved cleaner is acceptable. Renault and Ford both explicitly warn against direct application of liquid to the cited displays; Ford specifically warns not to pour or spray alcohol onto the touchscreen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a dry-only screen, keep the process dry even if another manufacturer’s instructions permit water. Renault’s EASY LINK guidance illustrates why: the cleaning method varies by screen type within that system. If the manual identifies a suitable product, use the specified category and follow the display-specific instructions. The EQS example calls for a suitable TFT/LCD display-care product, not a general interior cleaner, and says not to use other agents.

Do not try to remove a stubborn mark by escalating pressure or switching to a more aggressive household product. The reviewed guidance supports gentle wiping and warns against abrasive agents, scraping, solvents, detergent, alcohol-based products, and other cleaners for the displays it covers. If the manual does not explain how to handle a particular mark, consult the automaker’s recommended care instructions rather than improvising.

Volvo Cars UK’s EX30 glass and glossy-surface instructions phrase the method this way: “Use a clean microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water and clean the area with gentle circular motions.” That is useful guidance for the cited EX30 surfaces, including its display-cleaning procedure, but it is not a universal touchscreen rule. Another vehicle’s manual may require a dry cloth or a specified product instead.

Step-by-step: clean piano-black trim

  1. Confirm the finish and its care instructions. Piano-black or piano-lacquer-look trim is not automatically covered by the screen’s instructions. Check the trim section of the vehicle manual. If the manual distinguishes between trim materials, follow the directions for the actual finish you are cleaning.
  2. Remove loose dust first. Use a clean, soft cloth and gentle handling; do not use a rough cloth or brush that could abrade the glossy surface. Volvo’s guidance for glossy surfaces advises removing loose dirt before wiping, a useful reminder to avoid rubbing debris across the finish.
  3. Use only a method the manual permits. For the piano-lacquer-look trim covered by the cited EQS manual, Mercedes-Benz specifies a damp cloth and soapy water. Do not apply that instruction to another vehicle unless its manual allows it. The instructions for the display beside the trim do not replace the trim’s own directions.
  4. Wipe gently and let the surface dry. Avoid polishing or waxing unless the manual explicitly recommends it. Mercedes-Benz’s cited interior-care guidance warns against solvent-based cleaners, polishes, and waxes for genuine wood and trim elements. Volvo’s EX30 guidance says to let the glossy surfaces it covers dry fully before use.

Keep the cleaning method modest: a clean cloth, light handling, and only the moisture or product the vehicle maker allows. The cited EQS manual is a clear example of a trim-specific allowance—damp cloth and soapy water for its black piano-lacquer-look trim—but it should not be generalized to every glossy panel. Where the manual does not authorize a cleaner, do not assume that polish, wax, solvent-based products, or a cleaner intended for another material will be suitable.

How manufacturer instructions differ

These examples show why there is no single cleaner or liquid that can safely be recommended for every car screen and glossy trim panel. Use each source only for the vehicle and surface it covers. In particular, screen directions and trim directions are not interchangeable, and a method described for one model is not a guarantee for another model from the same brand.

Vehicle or guidance Screen instructions Trim or surface instructions Scope
Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan, June 2026 V297 MBUX manual Switch the cited display off and let it cool; carefully use a microfiber cloth and a suitable TFT/LCD display-care product. Do not use other agents. For black piano-lacquer-look trim, use a damp cloth and soapy water. US manual; applies to the cited EQS display and trim.
Renault EASY LINK The method depends on screen type: some types are dry-only; others permit a slightly moistened microfiber cloth with soapy water. Do not use alcohol-based products or spray or pour liquid on the screen; the guidance also warns against household or chemical cleaners. Not specified in the cited screen-cleaning guidance. Check the applicable manual to identify the screen category.
Ford 2025 Transit Owner’s Manual Use a microfiber cloth in a circular motion for dust or fingerprints. Do not pour or spray alcohol onto the touchscreen; do not use detergent or solvent on it. Not specified in the cited display-cleaning guidance. Applies to the cited 2025 Transit instructions.
Volvo EX30 support guidance Activate display cleaning mode, remove loose dirt, then use a clean microfiber cloth lightly dampened with water and gentle circular motions; let the surface dry fully. The same page covers glass and glossy surfaces and says not to scrape or use abrasive cleaning agents on displays, mirrors, or touch buttons. Volvo Cars UK guidance for the EX30; do not generalize it to other vehicles.

The table shows meaningful differences rather than contradictions to resolve by choosing the most permissive method. Renault makes the method depend on screen type. Ford gives a cloth-and-motion instruction while prohibiting particular substances and direct alcohol application. Volvo’s EX30 support guidance describes a lightly dampened water method and display-cleaning mode for that vehicle. Mercedes-Benz specifies a suitable display-care product for the cited EQS display, while its piano-lacquer-look trim instruction is different. The right instruction is the one that matches your vehicle and surface.

These documents also illustrate what they do not establish. The Ford and Renault screen-cleaning excerpts do not set out piano-black trim care, so they should not be cited as trim instructions. The Mercedes-Benz EQS trim direction does not establish screen care for other Mercedes models, and Volvo’s EX30 method does not establish a universal water rule. If a manual section covers only one surface, use it only for that surface.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using one cleaner on every surface: The allowed method varies by display type and trim finish. Check both sections of the manual.
  • Spraying the screen directly: Renault and Ford explicitly warn against applying liquid that way to the cited displays. If moisture is allowed, use the manual’s cloth method.
  • Assuming alcohol or glass cleaner is harmless: Ford warns against alcohol, detergent, and solvents for the cited touchscreen; Renault warns against alcohol-based products and household or chemical cleaners for EASY LINK screens. Do not extrapolate permission from another vehicle.
  • Using a dry, dusty, or abrasive cloth: Remove loose dirt first and use a clean, soft microfiber cloth. Avoid rough materials, brushes, scraping, and hard pressure.
  • Polishing piano-black trim to remove marks: Mercedes-Benz’s cited interior-care guidance warns against polishes and waxes for genuine wood and trim elements. Follow your own trim instructions instead of treating glossy trim like household glass or furniture.
  • Assuming “microfiber” means every method is acceptable: A microfiber cloth is the basic tool, but the manual still determines whether to use it dry, lightly dampened, or with a specified display-care product.
  • Borrowing instructions from a different model: The examples here are specific to the named manuals and support guidance. Even within one manufacturer, do not transfer an instruction to a different display or finish unless that vehicle’s manual says it applies.
  • Scrubbing harder when a mark remains: The guidance emphasizes gentle wiping and warns against scraping, abrasives, and excessive pressure. Do not trade a stubborn mark for an unapproved cleaning method.

A display-care product is a conditional purchase, not a universal recommendation. The cited EQS manual specifies a suitable TFT/LCD display-care product for that display, while other manufacturers give different instructions. Mercedes-Benz also refers owners to recommended care products in some cases. No single cleaner, merchant, or general price is established here; check your vehicle maker’s current guidance if it calls for a product. Do not buy household glass cleaner, alcohol, polish, or wax on the assumption that it will work across both surfaces.

There is no supported cleaning-frequency figure or numerical cost estimate to apply to every owner. The useful cost decision is whether your manual calls for anything beyond a reusable microfiber cloth. If it does, use the product category it specifies and confirm it is intended for the exact display or finish.

If you are unsure which method applies

Find the owner’s manual for the exact model and year, then check both the display-cleaning and interior-trim sections. Identify whether the manual names a display type, finish, or cleaning mode; the same vehicle may give separate directions for different surfaces. If the manual does not authorize a liquid or product, stick to a clean, soft microfiber cloth and avoid experimenting with household cleaners.

Use this simple decision order: first identify the surface, then find the instruction that matches it, then prepare and clean it exactly as directed. For the screen, look for dry-only language, permission for a lightly dampened cloth, or a specified display-care product. For piano-black trim, find the trim-specific care instruction and confirm whether moisture or soapy water is allowed. Check for preparation steps such as switching off and cooling the display or activating display cleaning mode. If the method remains unclear, the conservative choice is not to introduce an unapproved liquid or chemical.

Keep the vehicle and market context in mind when using online manuals. The examples in this article include a US EQS Sedan manual dated June 2026, a 2025 Ford Transit manual, Renault EASY LINK guidance, and Volvo Cars UK support for the EX30. They demonstrate manufacturer-specific differences; they do not replace the manual for your own vehicle’s model year, display, trim, and market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use glass cleaner on my car touchscreen?

Do not assume it is safe. The cited Renault EASY LINK guidance warns against household or chemical cleaners, and Ford warns against detergent and solvents on the cited Transit touchscreen. Check your exact vehicle manual and use glass cleaner only if it explicitly permits it.

Can I use alcohol or disinfectant wipes on a car screen?

Not unless the manual for that exact display specifically allows it. Renault warns against alcohol-based products for EASY LINK screens, and Ford says not to pour or spray alcohol onto the cited touchscreen. The guidance does not establish disinfectant wipes as a universal option.

Should I spray cleaner directly onto the screen?

No. Renault warns against pouring or spraying cleaning product on the screen, and Ford warns against pouring or spraying alcohol onto the touchscreen. If your manual allows moisture, use its cloth-based method instead.

Can I clean piano-black trim with soapy water?

Only if your vehicle’s trim instructions allow it. Mercedes-Benz specifies a damp cloth and soapy water for the piano-lacquer-look trim covered by the cited EQS manual, but that is not a universal rule for other vehicles or finishes.

Should the touchscreen be on or off while I clean it?

Follow the vehicle manual. The cited June 2026 Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan manual says to switch off its display and allow it to cool first. Volvo’s EX30 guidance says to activate display cleaning mode before cleaning. Those steps are model-specific.

What is the safest basic tool for cleaning car screens and glossy trim?

A clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth is the basic tool supported by the cited manufacturer instructions. The manual still determines whether to use it dry, lightly dampened, or with a specified display-care product.

How often should I clean a car touchscreen?

The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal cleaning schedule. Follow your owner’s manual and clean as needed using the method it specifies; do not use a numerical frequency as a substitute for the surface-specific instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth, but let the exact vehicle manual decide whether its touchscreen should be cleaned dry, with a lightly dampened cloth, or with a specified display-care product. Keep liquid off the screen, treat piano-black trim separately, and avoid unapproved alcohol, household cleaners, abrasives, polishes, and waxes.
