Jerseys, gloves, helmets, boots, armor and goggles do not share one safe cleaning method. If instructions are missing, use manufacturer fallback guidance cautiously—especially for gloves, where brands’ instructions can conflict.
How Can I Wash Motocross Gear Without Ruining It?
Start with the item’s own care label or manual, not a general rule for “riding gear.” A jersey may be washable while its gloves are not; a removable helmet pad may have different instructions from the helmet shell. Care guidance from BTO Sports, Alpinestars and Troy Lee Designs gives useful examples, but each manufacturer’s directions apply to its own products. Do not assume another brand’s method is safe for yours.

- Sort the kit by component. Separate washable textiles from gloves, helmet parts, boots, armor and goggles. Identify removable parts and check their care instructions separately.
- Read the label or manual. Follow the specified temperature, cycle, detergent and drying method. If the instructions are absent, use a fallback only when a manufacturer provides one for that component; do not treat it as universal.
- Remove loose mud and grit. Clear heavy dirt before laundering textiles. Close hook-and-loop fasteners if the garment instructions permit it, which can help reduce snagging.
- Wash only as directed. For washable jerseys and pants, maker guidance commonly calls for cold or gentle washing, mild detergent and turning the garment inside out. That does not mean every jersey or pant is machine washable.
- Dry according to the same instructions. Air drying is common guidance for racewear and gloves. Avoid high heat when the maker says to, and do not apply one item’s dryer instructions to the rest of the kit.
- Inspect as you clean. Check relevant straps, buckles, pivots and protective components, and follow the maker’s safety instructions for any damage or impact-related replacement decision.
Skip bleach, fabric softener, harsh chemicals and pressure washing wherever the product maker prohibits them. Cleaning is maintenance, not proof that protective equipment remains safe after damage or a significant impact.

The safest approach is to make a separate decision for each piece instead of putting the whole kit into one wash load. A quick sorting pass prevents a permitted jersey wash from becoming an unapproved glove or liner wash. If the label is still attached, use it as the first authority; if the item’s manual or product page gives more specific instructions, follow those. When details are missing, avoid treating a general guide for another brand as permission.

What cleaning method fits each part of the kit?
Use this as a sorting guide, then defer to the specific product’s label or manual. “Common guidance” below is not permission to override a more restrictive instruction.
| Component | Supported approach | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Jerseys and pants | Remove heavy dirt; where directed, close fasteners and turn garments inside out. Use a cold or gentle cycle with mild detergent; air dry. | Machine washing, temperature, and cycle depend on the garment. Avoid bleach, softener and high heat if its maker prohibits them. |
| Gloves | Follow the model’s label. Troy Lee Designs gives cold hand washing with mild detergent and hang drying as a fallback when a label is unavailable. | Instructions conflict by brand: REV’IT! says not to machine wash its gloves and warns against high-pressure devices. No universal glove rule is safe. |
| Helmet shell | Gently wipe dirt with a damp or wet cloth; Troy Lee Designs also says mud can be hosed off without a pressure washer, then air dried. | Avoid pressure washing and harsh chemicals. Do not infer that shell-care advice applies to liners or pads. |
| Removable helmet pads | Follow the pads’ own instructions. BTO Sports describes a mesh bag and gentle cycle for pads when that method is approved. | Machine washing is not universal; the pad’s instructions control. |
| Boots and armor | Hand clean boots; brush or rinse away dirt and use compatible products. Wipe armor with mild soap where compatible, then dry fully. | Do not use an unapproved cleaner or inappropriate heat. Inspect parts as appropriate to the model. |
| Goggles and lenses | Use the goggle maker’s care instructions and a lens-safe method. | Detailed motocross-lens steps are not established here; do not assume a solvent, paper towel or aggressive wiping is safe. |
| Water-resistant technical apparel | Use the exact garment’s wash and drying directions; some named Mosko Moto garments have a specific DWR-rejuvenation method. | That method is product-specific, not a setting for ordinary racewear or all technical shells. |
When choosing supplies, keep the decision just as specific as the cleaning method. Mild detergent is not automatically suitable for every material; check compatibility with the care instructions. A soft brush can help remove dirt during hand cleaning, but use one that reaches seams without abrasive scrubbing. A mesh laundry bag is only a handling aid for removable pads that are already approved for machine washing—it does not make an unapproved wash safe.
How should I wash jerseys, pants and other washable textiles?
Racewear is often the easiest part of a kit to launder, but “textile” does not automatically mean machine washable. BTO Sports and Alpinestars offer broadly similar care advice for their gear; Troy Lee Designs emphasizes checking the content label first and treats hand washing as a fallback. Use the instructions for your garment if they differ.
Before washing
- Knock or brush off loose mud and grit first rather than sending a heavily soiled garment straight into a wash.
- Close hook-and-loop fasteners only if the care instructions allow it. This can reduce snagging on other fabric.
- Turn the garment inside out when the manufacturer recommends it.
- Separate clothing with different care requirements. Do not include gloves or protective components simply because they are dirty too.
During washing and drying
For garments whose makers approve laundering, the common recommendation is a cold or gentle cycle with mild detergent. Do not substitute bleach or fabric softener when the manufacturer advises against them. Air drying is a cautious default where the garment instructions allow it; avoid high heat if the label prohibits it. If the label specifies hand washing, a machine cycle is not an equivalent shortcut.
Do not read “cold or gentle” as a universal setting for every garment: it is common guidance for washable jerseys and pants, not a replacement for the item’s temperature and cycle instructions. Likewise, “mild detergent” does not justify a product the garment maker excludes. Where directions do not permit machine washing, hand wash only if the maker provides or allows that method; otherwise, consult the manufacturer rather than guessing.
There is no evidence-based universal wash schedule for off-road gear. How often to clean it depends on visible soil, sweat, the garment’s materials and its care instructions. Let the care label—not a fixed calendar—decide whether the item can be washed and how.
After washing, keep the drying method tied to the same garment’s instructions. Air drying is commonly recommended for washable racewear, but don’t treat that as a rule for every component. In particular, a drying recommendation for a jersey does not answer how a helmet pad, technical shell or glove should be dried. Avoid high heat when the maker prohibits it, and do not substitute heat to speed up a process without checking the label.

Why do glove-washing instructions differ?
Gloves are a case where brand-specific instructions matter more than a convenient general laundry rule. Troy Lee Designs’ fallback, when the label is unavailable, is to hand wash in cold water with mild detergent and hang dry. REV’IT! warns that its gloves should not be machine washed or exposed to high-pressure devices. Those directions are not interchangeable.
Check the exact model’s label or manual before washing. If it is missing, do not treat another manufacturer’s instructions as confirmation that your gloves tolerate the same method. In particular, do not assume that gloves can go in a machine with a jersey, or that a pressure rinse is safe because it removes mud quickly.
This is why a care label matters even when two pairs of gloves look similar. One maker’s conservative hand-wash fallback is specific to that maker’s guidance; it cannot override another brand’s explicit warning. If your glove maker’s instructions are unavailable and do not offer a fallback, avoid escalating to machine washing, a high-pressure device or an unverified cleaner. Seek the exact model’s care guidance instead.
How do I clean a helmet and its liner?
Clean the exterior gently. Troy Lee Designs advises hosing off mud without a pressure washer, wiping the shell with a wet rag and letting it air dry. It also cautions against harsh chemicals. Use a damp cloth rather than forceful washing, and follow the helmet maker’s directions for products and drying.

Handle removable pads separately
First check whether a pad is removable and read its own cleaning instructions. BTO Sports describes placing approved removable pads in a mesh laundry bag and using a gentle cycle, but that is not a universal helmet-liner rule. If the pad’s instructions do not approve machine washing, do not infer permission from a guide for another product.
Cleaning does not restore a helmet after an impact. If a helmet has been involved in a significant impact or shows damage, follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance about inspection and replacement rather than relying on its appearance after cleaning.
Keep shell cleaning and liner care as two different tasks. The shell method described by Troy Lee Designs—remove mud without pressure, wipe with a wet rag and air dry—does not establish a wash method for the pads. Conversely, a mesh bag and gentle cycle described for approved removable pads does not mean the helmet shell belongs in a washing machine. Do not use a pressure washer as a shortcut: it is specifically cautioned against for helmet cleaning.

How should I clean boots and armor?
Brush or rinse dirt from boots, then clean them by hand with products compatible with their materials. Let them air dry naturally instead of applying inappropriate heat. Use the cleaning time to inspect buckles, straps and pivots for issues that matter to the particular model.
For armor, wipe surfaces with mild soap only where compatible with the product’s instructions, and let parts dry fully. Alpinestars’ category guidance recommends inspecting boots and wiping armor; it is not a substitute for a model-specific manual. Check the maker’s safety instructions if a protective part is damaged or has taken a significant impact, and follow its replacement guidance.
Clean these components by hand rather than assuming they can be treated as laundry. For boots, dirt removal and cleaning should be followed by natural drying, not an improvised high-heat method. While cleaning, inspect the hardware the product uses—such as buckles, straps and pivots—and look to its own instructions for what to do if a part appears damaged. The same principle applies to armor: a wipe-down can remove dirt, but it cannot establish that a protective component remains safe after damage or a significant impact.
What should I use on goggles and lenses?
Treat goggles and eyewear as a separate care category, not as another piece of textile or hard armor. Use the goggle manufacturer’s instructions and a method identified as safe for that lens. Manufacturer care pages, including POC’s, separate goggles and eyewear from other equipment, but they do not establish one universal cleaning liquid or wiping material for motocross lenses.
Do not assume that a household solvent, paper towel or aggressive rubbing is safe just because it removes visible dirt. If instructions are missing, avoid improvising with an unverified chemical or abrasive method; consult the product maker’s guidance.

If the product instructions are unclear, do not escalate to a solvent or aggressive wiping based only on appearance of the dirt.
When is water-resistant apparel different?
Technical shells with durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment should not automatically be washed like ordinary racewear. Mosko Moto’s guide, updated September 9, 2026, recommends washing certain named garments warm at 110°F / 40°C with a high-performance cleaner and tumble drying on low to rejuvenate DWR. That temperature and drying instruction applies only to the product types named in that guide.

For any other shell, check its garment page or tag before choosing water temperature, detergent or dryer settings. Do not spread a technical wash product, DWR treatment or tumble-dry recommendation across every item in a riding kit. Care instructions for one water-resistant garment do not establish a method for gloves, helmets or ordinary racewear.
The 110°F / 40°C setting is therefore not a general recommendation for off-road kit. It is a manufacturer instruction limited to the garment categories Mosko Moto names, paired with a high-performance cleaner and low tumble drying for DWR rejuvenation. If your garment is not one of those products, or its tag gives different directions, use its own wash and drying instructions instead. Do not apply a DWR treatment or specialized cleaner to other gear simply because it is water-resistant or has been exposed to mud.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich supplies are useful—and what should I avoid?
The supported cleaning kit is modest: mild detergent suited to the garment, a soft brush for hand-cleaning, and a mesh laundry bag only for removable pads whose instructions approve machine washing. Choose supplies by material compatibility and the care label, not by claims that a cleaner will restore protective performance.
- Mild detergent: Use only if compatible with the specific item; avoid bleach and softener when prohibited.
- Soft brush: Useful for hand-cleaning dirt, provided it can reach seams without abrasive scrubbing.
- Mesh laundry bag: Appropriate for pads only when their maker permits machine washing; it does not make an otherwise unapproved wash safe.
- Pressure washer: Do not use on helmets; Troy Lee Designs cautions against it. REV’IT! also warns against high-pressure devices for its gloves.
Do not use a cleaning product as evidence that a worn or impact-affected component is still protective. Keep inspection and replacement decisions tied to the product maker’s safety instructions.
There is no general product comparison that makes one cleaner suitable for the whole kit. The practical comparison is compatibility: match detergent to the garment’s material and care instructions; choose a soft brush for hand cleaning that avoids abrasive scrubbing; and use a mesh bag only when a removable pad is already approved for machine washing. No particular cleaner, brush or bag can turn a prohibited washing method into an approved one, and cleaning products do not restore protective performance.
How should I maintain gear between washes?
Maintenance means cleaning when soil or sweat calls for it, drying components according to their directions and inspecting the parts relevant to each item. The maker instructions do not establish a universal schedule, storage procedure or guaranteed lifespan extension, so avoid fixed intervals and broad promises. At each cleaning, note visible damage and check hardware such as boot buckles, straps and pivots; use the model’s safety guidance for decisions about protective parts.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Washing the full kit together: Textiles, gloves, helmet parts, boots, armor and goggles need separate care decisions. Sort them before cleaning.
- Assuming machine washing is harmless: Some garments and approved removable pads may be machine washable, but that permission does not extend to every textile, pad or glove.
- Using pressure to save time: Troy Lee Designs cautions against pressure washing helmets, and REV’IT! warns against high-pressure devices for its gloves.
- Using one brand’s advice on another brand’s item: Troy Lee Designs’ glove fallback and Mosko Moto’s DWR instructions have narrow, product-specific scope.
- Adding heat or chemicals to speed things up: Avoid high heat, bleach, softener and harsh chemicals where the maker prohibits them. Follow the item’s own drying and cleaner instructions.
- Judging safety by cleanliness: Cleaning does not restore a helmet after an impact or prove that damaged protective gear is safe.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Wash My Gear?
Sort it by component, read each item’s label or manual, remove loose mud and grit, and use only the washing and drying method approved for that item. Washable jerseys and pants commonly use a cold or gentle cycle with mild detergent and air drying when their maker approves it. Gloves, helmet parts, boots, armor and goggles need their own instructions.
Can I machine wash all motocross gear?
No. Some washable jerseys and pants, and some removable helmet pads, may be machine washed if their instructions permit it. Glove instructions vary by brand, and REV’IT! warns against machine washing its gloves. Check each product’s label or manual before using a machine.
What should I do if my gear has no care label?
Use a manufacturer-provided fallback only for the component and brand it covers. Troy Lee Designs, for example, gives cold hand washing with mild detergent and hang drying as a glove fallback when the label is unavailable. Do not apply that advice to another brand or component.
Can I use a pressure washer to remove mud?
Do not pressure wash a helmet. Troy Lee Designs recommends removing helmet mud without a pressure washer, and REV’IT! warns against high-pressure devices for its gloves. Follow the instructions for other items rather than assuming high pressure is safe.
Can I use the same wash setting for a DWR shell and racewear?
Not automatically. Mosko Moto’s updated guide, dated September 9, 2026, specifies 110°F / 40°C, a high-performance cleaner and low tumble drying for certain named garments to rejuvenate DWR. That instruction is product-specific; check the tag or product page for other shells.
Does cleaning mean my helmet or armor is safe after an impact?
No. Cleaning is not proof that protective equipment remains safe after damage or a significant impact. Follow the product maker’s safety instructions for inspection and replacement decisions.
The Bottom Line
Clean off-road motorcycle gear by component, not as one load: check each label or manual, remove loose dirt, and use only the washing and drying method approved for that item. Keep brand-specific advice—especially glove care and DWR-shell settings—within its stated scope. Cleanliness alone does not establish that damaged or impact-affected protection is safe.
