To check whether your router or a device supports Wi-Fi 8, find its exact model and hardware revision, then look for an explicit “Wi-Fi 8” or “IEEE 802.11bn” statement in the manufacturer’s specifications. Check the router and every phone, computer, or other client separately: both ends of a connection need Wi-Fi 8 capability. As of October 9, 2026, IEEE 802.11bn was still an in-process draft, so distinguish a manufacturer’s Wi-Fi 8 claim from formal certification.
What Wi-Fi 8 support means
Wi-Fi 8 is the common name associated with IEEE 802.11bn, an amendment project focused on ultra-high reliability. The Wireless Broadband Alliance describes goals that include reliability and coordination, with real-time applications such as industrial automation and autonomous systems among the use cases. These are project aims, not a guarantee that every Wi-Fi 8 product will deliver a particular speed or reliability improvement.

As of October 9, 2026, IEEE’s project timeline listed P802.11bn as in process at draft D2.0. The timeline showed an approval process predicted to extend into 2028. Qualcomm likewise said final IEEE approval was expected in 2028 and projected Wi-Fi Alliance certification around January 2028. Those dates are forecasts and may change; they do not establish that certification is already available or that any particular device has earned it.

That makes the exact wording in a product listing important. A vendor may announce hardware as Wi-Fi 8 based on the draft, while formal certification is a separate status to verify. A product-family name, a Wi-Fi 7 feature, or a chipset announcement alone does not prove that a particular finished product supports Wi-Fi 8.

It also helps to separate three questions that are often mixed together: whether a manufacturer says a model supports 802.11bn, whether that exact product has a Wi-Fi Alliance certification entry, and whether the product will perform well in your own network. A specification can answer the first question, a certification database can address the second once the relevant program is available, and neither one alone predicts the third. Reliability and throughput depend on the router, client, configuration, and conditions in which they communicate.
How to check a router and its clients
- Record the exact identity. Note the manufacturer, full model number, hardware revision, and sales region. For a router, check its product label or administration interface. For a phone or computer, use its system model information. Do not rely on a broad family name if the manufacturer sells different versions under similar names.
- Open the official specification for that exact model. Search the manufacturer’s product page or documentation for an explicit “Wi-Fi 8” or “IEEE 802.11bn” entry. Confirm that the statement applies to the specific model and revision you own or plan to buy. If the documentation only lists Wi-Fi 7 or earlier standards, or names a chipset without identifying the finished product’s wireless support, Wi-Fi 8 support is not established.
- Check the router and each client independently. Verify the access point’s specifications, then repeat the check for every phone, laptop, tablet, or other client whose Wi-Fi 8 capability matters. A Wi-Fi 8 router does not upgrade an older device’s radio.
- Separate a vendor claim from certification. Treat an explicit manufacturer specification as evidence of what the manufacturer claims for that model, not by itself as proof of Wi-Fi Alliance certification. When certification is available for the relevant program, check the Wi-Fi Alliance certification database for the exact product entry rather than relying only on packaging or a retailer description.
- Confirm the version sold in your region. Compare the local manufacturer page, model identifier, revision, and stated configuration. Product names and specifications can differ by region, and manufacturers may change plans or specifications.
For a useful record, write down the router’s full identity and the model identities of the clients you care about, then keep the manufacturer pages or documents that state their wireless standards. That prevents a common mix-up: confirming one item from a product family and assuming that the rest of the family, or all devices on the network, share its radio capabilities. If a support page is ambiguous, ask the manufacturer about the exact model and hardware revision rather than interpreting a broad product announcement as a specification.
Does my router support Wi-Fi 8?
Start with the label or administration interface to identify the router’s full model number and hardware revision. Then find the manufacturer’s official specification for that identity. Look for “Wi-Fi 8” or “IEEE 802.11bn” as a stated wireless standard. If neither appears, do not infer support from the router’s name, a new feature list, or a general announcement about the manufacturer’s Wi-Fi 8 plans.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the sales region as well as the model. The same product family may have region-specific specifications or availability. If an official page uses Wi-Fi 8 wording but does not clarify the hardware revision or certification status, treat those as unresolved details and ask the manufacturer to confirm them for the unit you have.
When buying, compare the exact local listing with the manufacturer’s page rather than searching only by a short product name. Retail pages may summarize capabilities, while the manufacturer’s documentation is the better place to confirm which standard applies to a model or revision. If the model number on a retailer page differs from the one in the official documentation, do not assume the two are interchangeable. Confirm the identity before treating specifications or reviews as relevant to the unit being sold.
A router specification also does not answer every practical buying question. Check its wired connectivity against your existing network needs, and consider whether the clients you use can take advantage of Wi-Fi 8. The Archer 8 Ultra example below has manufacturer-stated 10 Gbps wired connectivity, but that is a specification for that product, not a general requirement for Wi-Fi 8 routers or a promise that a household internet connection will reach that rate.

Does my phone, laptop, or other device support Wi-Fi 8?
Use the device’s system information to identify the exact model, then check that model’s manufacturer specifications for an explicit Wi-Fi 8 or IEEE 802.11bn statement. A phone’s marketing name may cover multiple configurations, so use the full model identity rather than assuming every variant has the same wireless hardware.

Qualcomm describes Wi-Fi 8 as intended to be backward compatible with earlier Wi-Fi generations: an older device can continue to connect using the capabilities it supports, but it does not become a Wi-Fi 8 client simply by joining a newer network. Check both ends of the link before expecting Wi-Fi 8 operation.
Apply the same check to each type of client you want to use: a laptop specification does not establish a phone’s capability, and a phone’s capability says nothing about a tablet or smart-home device. If you need to know whether a particular device will connect using Wi-Fi 8, look for the standard in that device’s own documentation. If no explicit statement is available, mark its support as unconfirmed rather than assuming it from the router’s name or age.
Backward compatibility is useful when replacing a router because older Wi-Fi devices can continue connecting using the generations they support. It is not a feature upgrade for those devices. The router and client negotiate a connection using the capabilities available at both ends, so a network containing a newer access point and older client should not be described as a Wi-Fi 8 client connection merely because the router supports the standard.
What an early Wi-Fi 8 product claim does—and does not—prove
One announced example is TP-Link’s Archer 8 Ultra, also identified as Archer BN800. Its product page listed it as a tri-band Wi-Fi 8 router, with manufacturer-stated aggregate wireless speed of 19 Gbps and wired connectivity of 10 Gbps. These are the manufacturer’s specifications, not independent test results. Aggregate wireless capacity is not a promise that one client will achieve 19 Gbps; a client’s capabilities and the network conditions also matter.
TP-Link announced preorders beginning September 30, 2026, in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Canada, and other select markets. It said local availability and pricing vary and that rollout details could change. The announcement therefore does not establish universal availability, and the product claim should not be confused with completion of the IEEE standard or proof of Wi-Fi Alliance certification.

TP-Link also reported up to 33% more throughput at mid-to-long range and up to 24% more consistent throughput under interference compared with its Wi-Fi 7 hardware. The company said those figures came from internal testing under controlled conditions and that actual performance varies. They are vendor-reported results, not independent or universal measurements. Do not use them to predict what another router, client, home, or interference environment will achieve.
TP-Link’s September 30, 2026 announcement quoted Senior Vice President of R&D Jim Poder describing the Archer 8 Ultra’s “Wi-Fi 8 StabilityEngine,” intelligent antenna technology, and AI-powered optimization. That is the company’s description of its product and positioning, not independent evidence that a particular feature produces a measurable result in every home. Treat named technologies and performance figures as vendor claims unless there is independent testing of the exact model and conditions relevant to your use.
The example is most useful as a reminder of what to verify when an early product appears: the exact model and regional version, the manufacturer’s stated standard, the certification status, the actual availability and local price, and whether your clients can use the claimed generation. A headline number or preorder notice is not a substitute for those checks. No price was established across the markets named by TP-Link, so compare current local listings rather than assuming one price applies everywhere.
| What you are checking | What to look for | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Router or client specification | An explicit Wi-Fi 8 or IEEE 802.11bn statement tied to the exact model and revision | The manufacturer’s stated support for that product; it does not by itself establish Wi-Fi Alliance certification. |
| Certification status | An exact product entry in the Wi-Fi Alliance certification database, when the relevant program is available | Whether the listed product has the certification shown in that database. |
| Router-to-client compatibility | Separate Wi-Fi 8 support statements for the access point and the client | Whether both ends are specified for Wi-Fi 8; one capable device cannot confer support on the other. |
| Retail claim or chipset announcement | A claim that does not identify the finished product, revision, or certification | Not enough on its own to confirm support for the exact unit. |
How to compare early Wi-Fi 8 products
Early products are not a like-for-like purchase just because they use the Wi-Fi 8 name. Compare the exact region-specific model and its stated specifications, then check whether it has the certification status you want. If the standard is still in development and certification is only projected for a later date, make that uncertainty part of the comparison rather than treating draft-based marketing as equivalent to a completed certification program.
Next, consider the devices that will connect to the router. If your current phones, computers, and other clients do not have documented Wi-Fi 8 support, buying a Wi-Fi 8 router alone will not make those devices use the new generation. That does not mean a newer router cannot serve older clients; backward compatibility is intended to let those devices connect using their existing capabilities. It does mean that the reason for upgrading should match what your devices can use.
Compare wired ports with your network requirements as well. For the Archer 8 Ultra, TP-Link lists 10 Gbps wired connectivity; another product’s port configuration must be checked on its own specification page. Likewise, a stated 19 Gbps aggregate wireless figure is a vendor specification for the Archer 8 Ultra, not a comparison result against all other routers or an expected single-device speed. Look for independent results before drawing conclusions about relative performance, and account for the fact that performance varies with the client and conditions.

Finally, check whether the product is actually sold in your market and what it costs there. TP-Link announced selected-market preorders, said prices and local availability vary, and noted that rollout details can change. Those facts support checking a current local retailer and official regional product page; they do not support quoting one universal price or assuming a product is available in every country. If the retailer’s listing and manufacturer page disagree, resolve the exact model and specification before comparing offers.

- The product page says only “Wi-Fi 8-ready.” Look for a specific standard and the exact model or revision to which the wording applies. If the page does not say, ask the manufacturer what the term means for that unit rather than treating it as confirmed 802.11bn support.
- The chipset is described as Wi-Fi 8 capable. Verify the finished router or client model. A component announcement does not establish how a manufacturer configured or marketed every product using that component.
- The router supports Wi-Fi 8 but the device specification does not mention it. The device’s Wi-Fi 8 capability is unconfirmed. Do not assume the router will add it through an update unless the manufacturer explicitly documents that for the exact device.
- The model number differs from the one in a review or listing. Recheck the regional product page and hardware revision. Similar names are not proof of identical radios or specifications.
- A box or retailer page claims certification. Verify the exact product entry in the Wi-Fi Alliance database when the certification program is available; a label or retailer description alone is not the database check.
Keep the distinction between “not confirmed” and “does not support it.” If the documentation is silent, you do not have enough evidence to confirm Wi-Fi 8 support for that exact product. Contact the manufacturer with the model number, revision, and region, and ask whether the specific unit supports IEEE 802.11bn and whether any certification applies. Avoid inferring an answer from a similar model or a promise about future products.
What to expect from a Wi-Fi 8 upgrade
Compatibility and performance are separate questions. A confirmed Wi-Fi 8 router and Wi-Fi 8 client establish that both ends are specified for the new generation; they do not guarantee a particular throughput or reliability improvement in a specific home. Qualcomm describes backward compatibility, so devices using earlier Wi-Fi generations can continue to connect with the capabilities they support, but they will not gain Wi-Fi 8 features merely because the access point is newer.
Before choosing hardware, verify the client devices that need the new standard, the router’s exact regional specification, its wired ports against your network needs, and the product’s certification status. Treat schedule and availability details as time-sensitive: the IEEE and Qualcomm timelines cited above were current projections as of October 9, 2026, while TP-Link’s preorder announcement was dated September 30, 2026.
For anyone deciding whether to upgrade now, the key practical questions are therefore specific: is the exact router explicitly listed for Wi-Fi 8, do the clients you care about have their own Wi-Fi 8 specification, and can you verify the certification status you require? Then assess regional availability, wired connectivity, and local cost. If one of those answers is missing, keep it as an open question instead of converting a vendor headline into a guarantee about your network.

Does my router support Wi-Fi 8 if it says Wi-Fi 8-ready?
Not necessarily. “Wi-Fi 8-ready” does not establish what standard the exact router supports unless the manufacturer ties the wording to that model and revision. Look for an explicit Wi-Fi 8 or IEEE 802.11bn specification, or ask the manufacturer to clarify.
Does a Wi-Fi 8 router make my phone Wi-Fi 8 compatible?
No. The router and phone each need their own Wi-Fi 8 capability for a Wi-Fi 8 connection. An older phone can continue connecting to a backward-compatible router using the Wi-Fi capabilities it already supports, but it does not gain Wi-Fi 8 features from the router.
Is Wi-Fi 8 certified yet?
As of October 9, 2026, IEEE listed P802.11bn as an in-process project at draft D2.0. Qualcomm projected Wi-Fi Alliance certification around January 2028, but that is a forecast and may change. Check the Wi-Fi Alliance certification database for an exact product entry when the relevant program is available.

Is the TP-Link Archer 8 Ultra a Wi-Fi 8 router?
TP-Link’s product page lists the Archer 8 Ultra, also identified as Archer BN800, as a tri-band Wi-Fi 8 router. TP-Link states 19 Gbps aggregate wireless speed and 10 Gbps wired connectivity; these are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Verify current regional availability, the exact model, and certification status separately.
How much does a Wi-Fi 8 router cost, and is it available everywhere?
The cited TP-Link announcement said pricing and local availability vary and described preorders beginning September 30, 2026, in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Canada, and other select markets. It did not establish one universal price or worldwide availability. Check current local retailer listings and the manufacturer’s regional page.
Will a Wi-Fi 8 router make my network faster or more reliable?
A Wi-Fi 8 label alone does not guarantee a particular speed or reliability improvement in your home. TP-Link reported performance figures for its Archer 8 Ultra versus its own Wi-Fi 7 hardware under controlled internal testing, and said actual results vary. Those figures are not independent or universal results.
The Bottom Line
Check the exact router and client models separately for an explicit Wi-Fi 8 or IEEE 802.11bn specification, then verify certification in the Wi-Fi Alliance database when the relevant program is available. As of October 9, 2026, 802.11bn remained in draft, and early product claims should be weighed against regional availability, actual client support, and the limits of vendor performance claims.
