Choose a Subaru by passenger count first, then test how much of your family’s regular cargo fits with those passengers aboard. For six to eight people, start with the three-row Ascent. For five, compare the Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, and electric Solterra by cargo shape, cabin layout, and the gear you actually carry—not just their maximum cargo figures. All specifications below are for U.S. 2026 models and come from Subaru; they are not independent measurements.
How do I choose the right Subaru SUV size for my family and cargo?
- Count the people who need seats. Include the maximum number who regularly ride together, not just the usual weekday load. The Ascent seats seven with second-row captain’s chairs or eight with a bench. The Forester and Outback are five-seat vehicles; Subaru’s sources describe the Crosstrek and Solterra as five-seat vehicles too. - Write down your real cargo load. Note the number and type of child seats and your three bulkiest routine items—for example, a stroller, pet crate, sports bag, or suitcase. Keep passenger seats in the positions you will use; folding seats to reach a maximum volume is not a useful comparison if you need those seats occupied.
- Compare only vehicles that meet the passenger need. A five-seat model’s larger cargo bay does not replace a third row. For an Ascent, evaluate the cargo area behind the third row when everyone is riding.
- Check shape and access, not only volume. Consider cargo-bay length and height, opening size and height, passenger legroom and headroom, how easily people climb in, parking footprint, and whether the load can be secured without blocking the driver’s view.
- Try the actual fit in person. Load your child seats, stroller, crate, or equipment into the exact model and trim you are considering, with seats adjusted as your family needs them. Published cubic feet cannot confirm that a particular object or child seat will fit.
Subaru itself cautions that buyers should not choose solely from cargo and passenger-volume figures. Subaru’s Outback and Forester comparison makes the point directly.
Which Subaru has the most cargo space?
Among the 2026 models in this comparison, the Outback has the largest published maximum: up to 80.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. That is a maximum configuration, not space available with all passengers seated. The figures below are Subaru-published specifications and comparisons; trim qualifications matter.

Which Subaru SUV has a third row?
Ascent: for families who need six to eight seats
The Ascent is the model here that addresses a regular need to carry more than five people. Choose between seven seats with second-row captain’s chairs and eight with a second-row bench. Its maximum cargo figure—75.6 cubic feet with seats folded—does not tell you how much room remains behind the third row while all seats are in use. Try the family’s normal bags and equipment in that configuration before deciding.
Which five-seat Subaru fits my family’s cargo best?
Outback: consider it when cargo length matters
The Outback pairs five seats with the group’s highest listed maximum cargo figure, up to 80.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Subaru points to its longer layout as an advantage for some oversized items, including a bicycle laid on its side. That is a layout example, not a guarantee that every bike or other long item will fit; test the specific object and account for passenger seating.

Forester: consider cabin height and an upright layout
The Forester seats five and offers up to 74.4 cubic feet on the Base trim or 69.1 cubic feet on the other trims shown in Subaru’s comparison. Subaru lists front headroom up to 41.2 inches there, and says the Forester has about an inch more front headroom than the Outback in that comparison. A roomier-feeling cabin and cargo height may matter more to your family than a folded-seat volume maximum.
Crosstrek: consider it when a smaller footprint is the priority
The five-seat Crosstrek has substantially less published maximum cargo volume than the Forester or Outback: up to 54.9 cubic feet in the relevant 2026 trim data. Subaru’s comparison page features a 54.7-cubic-foot figure, so check the exact trim and specification page rather than treating one number as applying to every Crosstrek. It may suit a family whose normal kit fits a smaller crossover, but the only reliable check for bulky gear is a physical loading test.

Solterra: consider it for a five-seat electric option
The five-seat Solterra is the electric choice in this group. Subaru’s 2026 brochure lists 23.8 cubic feet of cargo volume, or 63.5 cubic feet with the rear seatback folded. It also lists 42.1 inches of front legroom and 35.3 inches in the rear. Cargo capacity varies with cargo-floor height, so check the floor position and exact trim when comparing it with another model.
Is the Forester or Outback bigger inside?
There is no single answer that applies to every measure of “bigger.” For the 2026 specifications cited here, the Outback has the higher maximum cargo figure, while Subaru describes its layout as longer; the Forester offers a taller cabin and about an inch more front headroom in Subaru’s comparison. Cargo volume with seats folded does not settle passenger comfort, rear-seat fit, or whether a particular item will clear the opening. Compare the cabin and load in person with seats adjusted for your family.

Will a stroller, bike, or car seat fit?
Published maximum cargo volume cannot answer that for a specific family. A stroller’s folded shape, a bike’s wheelbase, a child seat’s installation and the front-seat position all affect fit. Bring the actual items to a Subaru retailer and check them in the exact vehicle and trim you are considering. Install child seats as directed by their manufacturers and verify that front and rear occupants can sit in their required positions. For a three-row Ascent, repeat the cargo check with the third row occupied if that is how the vehicle will normally be used.
If cabin space is insufficient, a roof carrier is a separate option—not a reason to assume every carrier or roof load is suitable. Subaru’s 2026 Solterra brochure lists a 176-pound dynamic roof-rail maximum and a 700-pound static maximum for the Solterra specifically. These are not general limits for other Subaru models. Confirm the exact vehicle’s documentation, rail and crossbar setup, carrier compatibility, and total loaded weight before buying or loading a carrier. 2026 Solterra brochure
