Choose transmission fluid by the exact specification in your vehicle’s owner’s manual—not by color, price, or a broad label such as “automatic transmission fluid.” First confirm whether your car has a conventional automatic, CVT, or DCT; their fluids are not automatically interchangeable. Without the car’s make, model, year, market, and transmission, there is no reliable universal product recommendation.
Start with the exact vehicle and transmission
Find the owner’s manual for your specific vehicle and market, then locate its transmission-fluid entry. Record the precise fluid name or specification and check for any relevant engine, drivetrain, or transmission variant. A general label such as “ATF” does not establish that a product meets the required specification.
Requirements vary even among vehicles from the same manufacturer. For example, a Ford owner’s manual specifies MERCON ULV fluid meeting WSS-M2C949-A for the application it covers and warns that other fluids could damage the transmission. A 2025 Hyundai LX2 owner’s manual lists SP4M-1 and allows alternatives only when they meet the stated specification and are approved by Hyundai Motor Co. Hyundai owner’s manuals These examples show why you need the entry for your own vehicle rather than a fluid chosen by brand or a similar model.

Identify the transmission type
Conventional automatic, continuously variable transmission (CVT), and dual-clutch transmission (DCT) fluids are distinct application categories. A fluid intended for one type should not be presumed suitable for another.
- Conventional automatic: Match the specification for the particular transmission; “automatic transmission fluid” alone is not enough.
- CVT: Check whether the manual calls for a dedicated CVT fluid and the exact specification.
- DCT: Check for the specified dual-clutch fluid. Do not substitute conventional ATF unless the vehicle documentation explicitly permits it.
Mercedes-Benz publishes separate operating-fluid approval sheets for different applications: sheet 236.22 covers an 8F DCT application, while sheet 236.14 covers an ATF application that includes CVT. Check whether an alternative fluid is genuinely permitted
Brand is secondary to documented fit. If the manual permits alternatives, compare each candidate against the exact specification and any approval condition in the manual. Product documentation should identify the required specification and clarify whether the fluid has the required approval—not merely state that it is “recommended for” or “suitable for” a range of vehicles.
Where a vehicle maker requires approval, verify the approval itself in the maker’s applicable fluid documentation. Do not treat a product maker’s suitability claim as equivalent to an approval unless the vehicle documentation says that is acceptable. Compare candidate fluids by fit, not appearance
If you have more than one candidate, compare the details that determine compatibility:
- Exact OEM specification required by the manual.
- Whether the manual requires formal approval, and whether the fluid has it.
- Transmission design: conventional automatic, CVT, or DCT.
- Coverage for the exact model year, market, and transmission.
- Whether the manual permits alternatives at all.
Do not infer compatibility from fluid color, viscosity alone, a similar vehicle, or a newer or older specification. Price may help distinguish products only after their fit has been established.

Follow this selection sequence
- Find the correct manual. Use the manual supplied with the vehicle or the maker’s official manual for the same model and market.
- Record the requirement. Find the transmission-fluid entry; note the exact name or specification, transmission type, and any relevant vehicle variant.
- Check the product documents. Match the exact requirement on the label and technical data sheet. Confirm any approval the manual requires.
- Verify vehicle coverage. Check the product’s documented coverage for your exact year, model, market, and transmission rather than relying on a similar model.
- Resolve missing or changed details. If the manual is unavailable, or the transmission has been replaced or modified, confirm the transmission code with the vehicle maker or a qualified transmission service professional before buying fluid.

What to do if you cannot confirm the specification
Do not guess or top up with a fluid selected by color or a broad “universal” claim. Check the vehicle documentation, then contact the maker or a qualified transmission service professional with the vehicle details and, if applicable, the transmission code. If the transmission has been changed, the original vehicle manual may not describe the installed unit; identify that transmission before selecting fluid.
