Yes—Mazda’s rotary engine has returned to production, but not as the engine in a new RX sports car. The MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV, which entered production in June 2023, uses an 8C rotary engine as a generator while an electric motor drives the wheels. In February 2024, Mazda restarted a dedicated rotary-engine development group to work on the technology’s next generation.
What Mazda’s 2024 rotary comeback actually means
There are two milestones behind the comeback story. First, Mazda brought a rotary engine back to series production in the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV in 2023. Then, on February 1, 2024, it restarted its RE Development Group to develop rotary engines for a new era.
Mazda said the group would work on applications including generators, compliance with regulations in major markets, and carbon-neutral fuels. The announcement is evidence of renewed engineering activity—not a production announcement for a new rotary sports car.
Mazda CTO Ichiro Hirose described the engine’s place in the company’s history: “In Mazda’s history, the rotary engine is a special symbol of our ‘challenger spirit.’” The statement appeared in Mazda’s February 1, 2024 announcement.

How the MX-30 rotary range extender works
The MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV is a series plug-in hybrid. Its electric motor provides propulsion and drives the wheels; the 8C rotary engine generates electricity. In other words, the rotary is not mechanically driving the car like the engine in a conventional RX-7 or RX-8.
A rotary engine produces power through the rotation of a triangular rotor. In the R-EV, that engine runs as an onboard generator, while the vehicle can also be charged from an external power source. This layout allows electric-motor driving with a gasoline-powered generator available for longer trips.

What changed in the 8C rotary engine
Mazda developed the 8C for generator duty, rather than simply reusing an earlier rotary design unchanged. Its 2023 technical review says the engine was developed about 11 years after the preceding rotary generation and describes several changes intended to improve combustion compared with the 13B:
- Higher compression.
- Direct fuel injection and cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).
- Revised combustion-chamber geometry.
- Displacement optimized for the generator application.
These are design and engineering details, not proof on their own of a particular real-world fuel economy, emissions result, or durability advantage. Mazda’s technical discussion is available in its 2023 Technical Review.

Specifications vary by source and market, so the figures below should be read in their original context rather than treated as a single, directly comparable range claim.

The 2023 specifications come from Mazda’s MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV European reveal. The later figures are in Mazda’s 2025 technical review. Neither set should be presented as a real-world driving test.

How the rotary returned to Mazda’s lineup
Mazda introduced its first rotary-powered car, the Cosmo Sport, in 1967. The RX-8 was the last rotary-powered Mazda model before the production pause; it ended production in 2012. Mazda restarted series production of a rotary engine in June 2023 for the MX-30 R-EV.
On October 30, 2023, Mazda announced that cumulative production of rotary-engine vehicles had exceeded two million. The milestone counts Mazda rotary-powered vehicles over time; it does not mean two million MX-30 R-EVs were produced. Is Mazda making a new RX-7 or RX-8?
Mazda’s February 2024 announcement did not confirm a new RX-7, RX-8, or any other rotary-powered sports car. It named future development work, including generator applications and regulation and fuel research, but gave no production timetable for another rotary vehicle.
Reports or concepts about a possible future rotary sports car should therefore be treated as speculation unless Mazda makes a specific announcement. The established comeback is the generator-powered MX-30 R-EV and renewed rotary-engine development—not a confirmed return to rotary-powered sports cars.
Where the MX-30 Rotary-EV is listed
Mazda’s Japan FAQ includes the MX-30 Rotary-EV among current-model questions and gives fuel and tank details associated with an October 2024 product update. That is evidence of Japan-specific product information, not proof that the vehicle is currently available to order worldwide.
