There is no single best extended car warranty for every vehicle. The right choice depends on what your car is already covered for, what the contract actually pays for, how claims work, and whether transferring repair costs is worth the price for as long as you plan to own the car. In the U.S., products marketed as “extended warranties” are often vehicle service contracts—not manufacturer warranties—so compare the written terms rather than the label.

What is an extended car warranty?

A manufacturer warranty generally comes with a new vehicle. An auto service contract is purchased separately. The Federal Trade Commission explains that an auto service contract or “extended warranty” is not a warranty as defined by federal law because it is sold separately from the car. The seller’s marketing name does not establish what the contract covers. See the FTC’s explanation of auto warranties and service contracts and the CFPB’s comparison of manufacturer warranties and service contracts.

How do I choose the best extended car warranty for my car?

Start with the contract, not a company ranking or a monthly payment. Compare offers using the same vehicle, coverage period, mileage limit, and deductible assumptions. A useful comparison includes the covered repairs, exclusions, total cost, claim and repair process, provider roles, and cancellation terms.

What to compare What to verify in writing
Coverage design Whether coverage lists specific components or is exclusionary; which failures qualify; and how pre-existing conditions are treated. Do not assume “bumper-to-bumper” means every repair is covered.
Term and mileage When coverage starts, how long it lasts, the mileage cap, whether it overlaps with remaining factory coverage, and whether it extends beyond your expected ownership period.
Total cost Upfront or financed price, fees, deductible per visit or repair, payout caps, and total cost over the contract period—not just the monthly payment.
Repair access Whether you can use your own repair shop, must use a particular dealer, or need approval before work begins; also check parts, labor, and diagnostic-charge limits.
Claims and payment Who handles claims, required records and deadlines, direct payment versus reimbursement, appeal steps, and how long reimbursement may take.
Extra benefits Whether towing, roadside assistance, rental car, or trip interruption is included, and the limits or separate caps for each benefit.
Provider and cancellation The seller, provider or obligor, and administrator; applicable financial backing or state protections; cancellation window, refund calculation and fees; and transfer rules.

The FTC’s guide to extended warranties and service contracts recommends weighing initial cost, fees, deductibles, term, and coverage. It also cautions that a contract may not fully cover towing or rental expenses.

What does an extended car warranty cover?

There is no standard coverage list: the written contract controls. Some plans name the components they cover; others describe covered repairs by listing exclusions. In either case, read the component definitions, failure conditions, exclusions, payout limits, and maintenance requirements. Ask for examples of repairs that would and would not qualify for your vehicle.

Check how the contract treats existing faults and damage, wear, improper fluids, overheating, neglect, abuse, and continued driving after a warning. These are examples of issues that may be addressed by exclusions or maintenance conditions, not a universal list of exclusions. California’s Department of Insurance discusses such examples in its guide to automobile service contracts and repair agreements; the actual contract and applicable state law determine what applies.

How do claims and repairs work?

A broad-sounding coverage promise is of limited value if the claim process is difficult or the repair shop cannot follow the contract’s rules. Before buying, establish who authorizes repairs, which shops are eligible, and whether the shop must get approval before starting work. The CFPB notes that some contracts require service at a particular dealer.

  • Ask whether the contract pays the repair facility directly or requires you to pay first and seek reimbursement.
  • Confirm whether diagnostics, teardown, parts, and labor are subject to limits or separate approval.
  • Find out which receipts, maintenance records, and claim forms are required, and when they must be submitted.
  • Review how to appeal a denial and whether the contract specifies a reimbursement timeline.

For a plain-language comparison of the coverage types, see the CFPB’s overview of manufacturer warranties and vehicle service contracts.

Is an extended car warranty worth it?

It may be worthwhile if the specific contract protects you against repairs you want to insure against, at a cost and with claim terms you can accept. It may not suit you if the covered repairs are narrow, exclusions undermine the protection you need, the contract overlaps substantially with existing coverage, or its price is more useful in a repair savings reserve.

There is no established universal break-even formula that can determine the right answer for every car and owner. Compare the contract’s total cost and limits with your vehicle’s existing coverage, how long you expect to keep it, and your ability to handle repair costs. The FTC suggests considering whether setting money aside for repairs makes more sense; the CFPB explains what an extended warranty or vehicle service contract is.

Should I buy an extended warranty from the dealer?

You can consider a dealer offer, but do not treat the point of sale as your only opportunity to decide. First check the manufacturer warranty and any certified pre-owned coverage, then compare the dealer’s written contract with other available options using the same term, mileage, deductible, and vehicle assumptions. Ask who the contract provider or obligor and administrator are; the dealer selling it may not be the entity handling claims.

For a used-car purchase, review the dealer’s written warranty information as well as any separate service contract. The FTC’s Buyers Guide provides information for used-car buyers.

How can I spot an auto warranty scam?

Be cautious of unsolicited calls, texts, or mail claiming your warranty is expiring or implying an affiliation with your automaker or dealer. Verify any claimed connection directly with the business using contact information you find independently. Do not let urgency replace time to read the contract.

The FTC describes these tactics in its alert about auto service contract and extended-warranty scams. If you are considering a real offer, independently check the seller, provider, and administrator and look for complaints through your state consumer protection office or relevant regulator.

How to compare offers before you buy

  1. Identify coverage you already have. Review the manufacturer warranty, any certified pre-owned coverage, and the vehicle’s current mileage and age. Ask for the written warranty and service-contract documents.
  2. Get the complete contract. Ask for the sample contract before paying. Have the seller identify the provider or obligor and administrator and point out exclusions, claim procedures, cancellation terms, and limits on labor, parts, towing, rental, and total payouts.
  3. Compare equivalent quotes. Use the same vehicle eligibility, coverage term, mileage cap, deductible, and assumptions. Calculate the contract-period total, including fees and financing cost where applicable.
  4. Check conditions against your car and habits. Ask what maintenance records are required and how the contract handles conditions such as improper fluids, overheating, neglect, or continued driving after a warning.
  5. Verify the provider independently. Search the provider’s name with “complaint” and check your state consumer protection office or relevant regulator. Confirm claimed automaker or dealer affiliations directly with that business.
  6. Compare with saving for repairs. Decide whether the price buys useful protection for the time you expect to own the vehicle or whether keeping the money available for repairs better fits your finances.

What state rules should I consider?

State treatment and regulation of service contracts vary, so do not assume one state’s rules apply nationwide. California’s Department of Insurance revised its guide to automobile service contracts, extended warranties, and other repair agreements on February 18, 2025. The guide helps explain provider roles and possible exclusions, but it is California-specific rather than a national rulebook. Check the relevant regulator for your state and read the contract for the vehicle and offer you are considering.
