Use the bike maker’s road-pressure recommendation; a race tire is not automatically an upgrade for street use.
Start with the motorcycle’s approved fitment
Before comparing brands or tire categories, check the owner’s manual or the motorcycle manufacturer’s fitment reference for the approved front and rear sizes and construction. Michelin advises starting with the specified size and whether the tire should be radial or bias. A tire’s sport-bike marketing label does not establish that it fits your motorcycle.

Confirm the requirements for the exact model and year, including the tire’s load and speed requirements where specified. Do not assume a size listed for a similar motorcycle, or for another year of the same model, is approved for yours. Bridgestone also advises following the motorcycle maker’s fitment guidance when replacing tires, including for radial fitment.

Once fitment is established, decide how the bike is used: commuting, spirited road rides, longer highway trips, or a mixture. Rank what matters most—wet-weather grip, tread life, cornering feel, and comfort—rather than expecting one tire to maximize every quality.

- Mostly distance or highway riding: touring-oriented tires emphasize tread life and stable highway behavior, according to Michelin’s category guidance.
- A mix of sport riding and distance: sport-touring tires are intended to balance grip and longevity. They are a category worth comparing for mixed use, not a guaranteed best choice for every rider.
- Wet or changeable conditions: include wet-weather grip and your usual riding environment in the comparison. The category descriptions alone do not establish that a particular model is best in the wet.
These labels describe broad priorities, not a universal ranking. The available manufacturer guidance does not support a quantified lifespan or a model-by-model winner, so compare current product information for tires that meet your bike’s fitment requirements.
Do not mistake a race tire for a street upgrade
Race tires are designed for different conditions from ordinary road riding. Bridgestone warns that they can be unstable under normal street riding conditions. Do not select a race tire on the assumption that a racing designation means better everyday road performance; choose a tire intended for your use and approved for your motorcycle.

Keep the front and rear working as a pair
Michelin recommends using the same brand and model at the front and rear where possible. Tire profiles, compounds, and handling characteristics are designed to work together, so treat the pair as a system rather than choosing each tire independently. Follow the motorcycle maker’s approved fitment and the tire maker’s pairing guidance when a matching pair is unavailable.

Set pressure for road use
For street riding, use the pressure recommended by the motorcycle manufacturer, rather than substituting a tire’s track-pressure advice. Michelin’s pressure guide says to return to the recommended cold road pressure before using the bike on the street after track riding. Check the owner’s manual or the vehicle maker’s pressure guidance for your motorcycle.

A practical selection sequence
- Look up fitment: in the motorcycle owner’s manual or manufacturer fitment reference, record the approved front and rear sizes and construction for your exact motorcycle.
- Define your use: identify whether the bike is mainly for commuting, spirited road riding, distance, or a combination.
- Rank priorities: decide how you weigh wet grip, tread life, cornering feel, and comfort.
- Compare suitable categories: consider touring priorities for distance-focused use and sport-touring for mixed sport and distance riding; then compare only options approved for the bike.
- Check the pair: where possible, choose a front and rear set designed to work together.
- Use road pressure: set cold tire pressure to the motorcycle maker’s road recommendation.
For example, riders may compare several named models for a particular motorcycle such as a Triumph Street Triple 765 R. That comparison is meaningful only after checking the exact bike’s year and approved fitment; a model name or another rider’s choice does not prove compatibility or establish a universal winner.
