For U.S. buyers, the comparison now centers on BMW’s upcoming 2027 electric i3 50 xDrive and the new-generation gasoline 330, 330 xDrive, and M350 xDrive—not automatically the i4. BMW announced the lineup on September 29, 2026, with U.S. launch scheduled to commence in Q1 2027. The i3 pairs a higher price than the 330 models with a preliminary range estimate of 446–468 miles; the right choice depends heavily on charging access, trip patterns, budget, and which performance level you want.
Which BMW models are being compared?
BMW has announced the electric i3 alongside gasoline versions of the eighth-generation 3 Series. All four are scheduled to begin U.S. launch in Q1 2027, so this is a comparison of announced models, not cars already supported by independent road tests or final EPA labels. The figures below are BMW-published specifications and estimates. Prices are U.S. base MSRPs before the required $1,350 destination and handling charge; options, taxes, dealer offers, and financing can change the transaction price. BMW’s September 29, 2026 announcement gives the announced specifications.

BMW lists a 155-mph electronically limited top speed for the 330 models when fitted with sport tires. The announcement does not establish specifications for unannounced packages or similarly equipped pricing.
How much more does the electric i3 cost?
Before destination and handling, the i3 50 xDrive’s $61,500 announced base MSRP is $11,600 above the rear-wheel-drive 330 and $9,600 above the 330 xDrive. It is $4,400 below the higher-performance M350 xDrive. Add $1,350 destination and handling to each model: that makes the announced starting figures $62,850 for the i3, $51,250 for the 330, $53,250 for the 330 xDrive, and $67,250 for the M350 xDrive, before options, taxes, and any dealer pricing differences.

These are starting prices, not matched-equipment comparisons or actual dealer offers. A fair quote should account for the options you want, financing, insurance, and any incentives for which you are eligible. Incentive programs and eligibility can change, so check current federal, state, and local rules rather than assuming a credit will apply.
What does the i3’s range estimate mean in everyday driving?
BMW’s preliminary 446–468-mile estimate for the i3 50 xDrive is based on BMW AG testing using EPA procedures. It is not an EPA-certified rating and is not a promise of the distance a particular driver will get. The announcement also gives no certified 2027 i3 energy-use rating or 2027 gasoline 3 Series fuel-economy figure; those comparisons will need final labels.

BMW says range can vary with vehicle configuration, wheels and tires, driving style, traffic, accessories, charging habits, and outside temperature. Cold weather can reduce range: low temperatures affect available battery capacity, while cabin heating uses energy. BMW recommends preconditioning the vehicle while it is plugged in. This is general BMW EV guidance, not a measured cold-weather result for the upcoming i3. BMW’s range guidance explains these factors.
The i3 announcement also specifies 800-volt technology and DC charging capability up to 400 kW. That is a stated maximum capability, not a guarantee that every charging stop will deliver that rate. Actual charging depends on the charger and conditions, and BMW’s announcement does not establish a charging time for a particular trip.

Can you charge it at home?
Home charging can make an EV convenient for drivers with a suitable parking space and electrical setup: routine charging can happen where the car is parked rather than at a gas station. Before choosing the i3, determine whether you have permission to install equipment, adequate electrical capacity, and a compatible charger. If installation is needed, have a qualified electrician assess the site and requirements.
BMW’s current i4 materials describe a flexible charger for 120V and 240V outlets, say 240V charging can take 10–12 hours depending on the model, and note that an i4 on a 240V, 40A circuit with a NEMA 14-50 adapter can charge at up to 9.6 kW. Those are i4-specific details; they do not establish the upcoming i3’s included equipment, connector, charging limit, or charge time. Will the electric BMW cost less to own?
There is not enough information in the announcement to declare a lifetime-cost winner or calculate model-specific cost per mile. BMW’s own guidance says the comparison depends on purchase price, running costs, maintenance, and incentives. Local electricity and gasoline prices, charging location, insurance, financing, tires, depreciation, and how long you keep the car also matter.
To estimate energy expense, BMW suggests multiplying battery capacity in kilowatt-hours by the electricity price per kilowatt-hour for an approximate full-charge cost. Your real bill depends on how much energy you add, charging losses, time-of-use rates, and public charging fees. For a useful comparison, use your utility tariff and local gasoline price, then wait for the certified efficiency figures for these models. BMW’s EV cost guidance discusses these variables.

BMW also notes that EVs generally have fewer moving parts, do not need engine-oil changes, and may use their brakes less because regenerative braking recovers energy. These are general maintenance considerations, not evidence of a specific i3-versus-330 savings amount. Repairs, tire wear, insurance, and resale value can shift total cost in either direction.
Which model fits your priorities?
Choose the i3 50 xDrive if
- You can charge conveniently at home or work, or have a reliable public-charging plan.
- Your regular driving and longer trips fit the vehicle’s eventual certified range and the charging options on your routes.
- You want an electric all-wheel-drive sedan and are comfortable with the i3’s higher starting price than the 330 models.
- You are willing to reassess once final U.S. equipment details, EPA labels, and independent road tests are available.
Choose the 330 or 330 xDrive if
- A lower announced starting price matters more than electric power or the i3’s preliminary range estimate.
- You prefer gasoline refueling and do not want to plan around charging access or charging stops.
- You want the 330’s 2.0-liter inline-four; choose between rear-wheel drive in the 330 and all-wheel drive in the 330 xDrive.
Consider the M350 xDrive if
- You want the gasoline inline-six and the strongest acceleration figure among the announced models.
- You are comparing against the i3 on performance as well as powertrain: BMW claims 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds for the M350 xDrive versus 4.5 seconds for the i3 50 xDrive.
What to verify before placing an order
- Confirm timing and availability. BMW says the U.S. launch is scheduled to commence in Q1 2027; verify the order and delivery timing with a dealer.
- Compare actual configurations. Request written quotes that include destination, options, taxes, and financing terms for the specific trims you are considering.
- Check charging feasibility. Confirm parking, installation permission, electrical capacity, and the i3’s final connector and charging specifications before budgeting for equipment.
- Map your real driving. Consider your normal commute, longer routes, seasonal temperatures, and access to charging; do not treat the preliminary range estimate as guaranteed usable range.
- Build a local cost comparison. Use your electricity tariff, gasoline price, insurance quotes, expected ownership period, and confirmed incentives alongside final efficiency labels.
BMW describes the shared lineup as “distinct powertrain choices within one model family.” That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independent verdict on which car is better. The practical decision is whether the electric i3’s charging routine and announced specifications suit your life, or whether a gasoline 3 Series better matches your budget and refueling preferences.
