Choose based first on how often you use the rear seats and trunk. A luxury sport sedan is usually the more practical starting point if you regularly carry passengers or want easier entry and exit; a performance coupe may suit you better if its driving character, styling, or performance-focused equipment matters more and you can live with less convenient rear seating. Those are tendencies, not guarantees: compare the exact model year, trim, and powertrain.
Start with the people and things you carry
Rear-seat use is often the clearest dividing line. BMW describes its coupes as four-seat vehicles and advises shoppers who regularly carry multiple passengers to consider a roomier sedan, touring car, or SUV (BMW USA coupe overview). A sedan’s rear doors can also make loading passengers easier, especially when fitting a child seat or helping someone get in and out.

Seating capacity alone does not tell you whether a car will work for your household. Cadillac, for example, lists five seats for the CT4 and CT5 sedan examples on its lineup page, but that does not establish how comfortable a particular model is for the adults or children who will ride in it (Cadillac sedans). Sit in the back seat yourself, check access, and bring any child seat you use.

Published cargo volume is useful for narrowing a shortlist, but the opening shape and your usual load matter just as much. A trunk can have a respectable capacity and still be awkward for a stroller, bulky luggage, sports gear, or a pet carrier. Test the specific items you carry and consider whether you need the rear seats occupied while doing so.

Manufacturer examples show why body style alone does not settle the question. BMW lists 13.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity for 2 Series Coupe/M2 examples and 15.5 cubic feet for 4 Series Coupe/M4 examples in its coupe overview; confirm the exact model year and configuration before relying on a figure (BMW USA coupe overview). These published capacities do not establish which car will fit your particular cargo better.
Match performance to the exact trim
“Coupe” does not mean “faster than a sedan.” Performance depends on the engine, drivetrain, tires, chassis tuning, and equipment of the particular configuration. BMW identifies the M2 and M4 as high-performance coupes, but that is not evidence that every coupe will outperform every sport sedan.

For perspective, Cadillac lists the 2026 CT5-V as a five-seat sedan with 360 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque, and the CT5-V Blackwing with 668 hp and 659 lb-ft. Both figures are manufacturer-published lineup specifications, not independent test results; the Cadillac page has overlapping model-year headings, so verify the exact year and trim before comparing or purchasing (Cadillac sedans).

That page is titled for the 2024 model and also references 2027 capacity, so treat it as a model-specific example rather than a current-year lineup guarantee (BMW 4 Series Coupe specifications). For a fair comparison, line up the same model year and broadly comparable powertrain tiers, then confirm the exact specifications with the manufacturer or dealer.

Decide what kind of driving you actually want
A comfortable, quick commute, spirited road driving, and occasional track use can call for different priorities. Compare the actual trim’s engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, seats, and available driver-assistance features rather than assuming the body style supplies a particular experience. If you want all-wheel drive, check that it is offered on the exact configuration; do not assume it is available just because another version of the model has it.
Fuel economy is configuration-specific, too. Cadillac lists EPA-estimated fuel economy of 18/27 mpg city/highway for the 2026 CT5-V with rear-wheel drive and 13/20 mpg for the 2026 CT5-V Blackwing. These are manufacturer-listed EPA estimates for those named configurations, not guarantees of real-world consumption (Cadillac sedans). Compare the precise engine and drivetrain you are considering, and account for your local conditions and driving habits.
Consider a sportback or fastback as a middle ground
If you like coupe-inspired styling but need more versatile cargo access, include hatchback-style alternatives in your test-drive list. Audi positions the A6 around comfort and refinement and describes the A7 Sportback as pairing coupe-inspired styling with a versatile hatch cargo area (Audi sedan models). This does not make a sportback automatically more practical for every load, but it is a useful option to assess when a conventional sedan and a coupe both involve compromises.
Compare the cars against your routine
Before choosing, evaluate the shortlisted vehicles on the same model-year and powertrain basis wherever possible. Manufacturer specifications help you screen candidates, but they cannot tell you whether a seat, trunk opening, ride, or control layout works for you.
- Passengers: How often will adults or children ride in back? Try rear-seat entry and exit, not just the sitting position.
- Cargo: Does the opening admit your regular bags or equipment? Check space with the rear seats in the position you will actually use.
- Driving: Is your priority comfortable fast commuting, spirited road use, or occasional track driving? Confirm that the trim includes the hardware you want.
- Climate and traction: Decide whether rear-wheel drive suits your local conditions or whether an all-wheel-drive version is available and desirable on that exact model.
- Comfort and technology: Compare the specific seats, ride, cabin noise, driver assistance, and infotainment features, including which are standard and which are optional.
- Ownership cost: Get local transaction-price and insurance quotes, and compare fuel economy, tire costs, maintenance, and warranty coverage for the exact configurations. No comparable total-cost figures are established by the cited manufacturer pages.
A test drive should include the maneuvers and passengers that reflect your usual week. Try parking, getting into the back, loading your normal cargo, and driving on the roads you use most. The right choice is the car whose compromises fit your routine—not the body style with the more persuasive label.
