This guide covers motorcycle helmet visors: there is no evidence here to name one “best” model or claim that a particular tint or coating provides ultimate protection. Choose a visor that is approved for your jurisdiction, fits your exact helmet, suits the light conditions you ride in, and remains clean and scratch-free.
How do you choose a safe motorcycle helmet visor?
Start with compatibility and road-use approval, then consider visibility and care. A replacement visor is not universal: check the helmet manufacturer and exact model, and verify that the visor meets the approval rules where you ride. The UK Department for Transport’s motorcycle helmet and visor guidance says road-use visors must meet an appropriate approved standard.
- Match the helmet: Confirm the replacement is specified for your helmet’s make and exact model. Do not assume that a visor fitting a similar-looking helmet will fit or be approved for yours.
- Check local approval: Read the visor marking and compare it with the road-use requirements in your jurisdiction.
- Choose for the light: Consider where and when you ride. A tint that reduces glare in bright conditions may reduce visibility in poor light; do not choose a tint without checking local rules.
- Assess condition and care: Prioritize clear vision, and follow the helmet maker’s cleaning and replacement instructions for the visor and any coatings.
Official sources establish these checks, but do not provide comparative test results for particular visor products. They therefore do not support a tested product ranking or a claim that one visor offers “ultimate” protection.
What approval marks and tint rules apply in Great Britain?
For riders using roads in Great Britain, the Department for Transport guidance, updated 22 July 2025, lists UNECE Regulations 22.05 and 22.06 among the relevant standards. For a visor carrying a UNECE approval mark, it describes a UN “E” mark and an approval number whose first two digits are 05 or 06. Check that the actual visor carries an appropriate approval for road use; do not rely on a seller’s description alone.
#1 Best Overall
- High Definition Transmissivity
- Transmissivity not lower than 85% of visible light
- Left and Right horizon not lower than 105 degree
- Up horizon not lower than 7 degree
The same guidance says visors transmitting less than 50% of visible light do not fully comply with the listed standards and cannot legally be used on the road in Great Britain. It also warns that heavily tinted visors may be dangerous. This threshold is specific to the cited Great Britain guidance; it is not a universal rule for every country.
In the United States, NHTSA’s helmet guidance explains that a DOT mark represents the manufacturer’s certification to FMVSS No. 218, under a system in which manufacturers self-certify and NHTSA tests some helmets. That information concerns helmet labeling and does not establish all state-level visor or eye-protection rules. Check the requirements where you ride.

When should you replace a scratched visor?
Replace a scratched visor rather than continuing to ride with impaired visibility. SHARP, the UK Department for Transport helmet assessment programme, warns that a dirty visor can impair vision and that scratches can cause dazzle from vehicle headlights. Its helmet care guidance puts the instruction plainly: “If your visor becomes scratched, get it replaced!”
Check the visor regularly for scratches and dirt that obstruct your view. If cleaning does not restore clear visibility, or the visor is scratched, follow the helmet maker’s replacement guidance and obtain a compatible part. The cited sources do not specify a universal replacement interval.

How should you clean a motorcycle helmet visor?
Follow the cleaning instructions for your specific helmet and visor. Coatings and materials can differ, so avoid improvising with cleaners or methods that the manufacturer does not recommend.
- Check the helmet maker’s instructions for the visor, including any coating-specific cautions.
- Remove road dirt gently. SHARP describes wetting paper towels and letting them soften dirt before wiping, rather than rubbing dry dirt across the visor.
- Inspect the visor after cleaning. If scratches remain, replace it according to the maker’s instructions.
Do SHARP helmet stars rate visor safety?
No. SHARP’s one-to-five-star ratings indicate the level of protection a helmet can provide; they are not ratings of individual visor models. SHARP also says every helmet sold in the UK must meet at least one regulatory standard regardless of its SHARP rating. Use the SHARP testing information as a helmet-level resource, not as a visor ranking.
