Compare displacement alongside power and torque, sit on and test ride your shortlist, check each bike’s weight using the maker’s stated definition, and build a local ownership-cost estimate before deciding. Manufacturer figures for different countries and model years are useful starting points, but they are not a controlled head-to-head test.
Start with the kind of riding you will actually do
A retro roadster may appeal because of its looks, but the right choice depends on what it needs to do for you. A bike used mainly for slower urban trips presents different demands from one regularly ridden on faster roads, carrying a passenger or covering long distances. Before comparing specifications, write down where and how you expect to ride: typical speeds, trip length, traffic, hills, frequency of passenger or luggage use, and whether you need to manoeuvre or park the bike in a confined space.

This is not a formula for predicting performance. It is a way to decide which questions matter when you compare bikes. For instance, stated engine output and torque can help distinguish specifications, but they do not establish how quickly a bike accelerates in real conditions or how comfortable it will feel at your usual speed. Those questions require a ride on the particular bike, where available, and a check that its fit and controls work for you.

Set practical priorities before looking at numbers
- Roads and speed: note whether your routine is mostly stop-start, open roads, or a mix. Use this to frame questions about engine character and comfort rather than assuming a particular capacity will suit.
- Rider fit: consider reach to the bars and controls, knee and hip position, and whether you can manage stops and tight manoeuvres with confidence.
- Ownership budget: set a limit that includes more than the purchase price. Insurance, servicing, fuel, wear items, taxes, inspection and repairs may all contribute.
- Local availability: verify the exact model year, variant, equipment and price offered in your country. A specification page from another market is not a local quote.
Compare engine size with power and torque
Displacement, usually expressed in cubic centimetres (cc), describes engine capacity. It is useful for identifying and comparing engines, but it does not by itself tell you how much power or torque a bike produces, where those outputs occur in the rev range, or how the bike will feel on the road. Compare capacity alongside the manufacturer’s stated power and torque, including the rpm at which each figure is listed when that information is available.

For example, Royal Enfield India’s Classic 350 product page lists a 349cc engine, 20.2 bhp at 6,100 rpm and 27 Nm at 4,000 rpm, along with a five-speed transmission. Honda UK’s specifications for the 2025 GB350S list 348cc, 15.5 kW at 5,500 rpm and 29.0 Nm at 3,000 rpm. Triumph India’s Speed 400 specification page lists 32 Nm. These are market-specific manufacturer specifications—not measurements from the same test, and not enough to establish a real-world performance ranking.
How to read the figures
- Displacement: a useful identifier, not a verdict on acceleration, comfort or suitability.
- Power: note the unit (for example, bhp or kW) and the engine speed at which the maker states it. Do not compare numbers in different units as if they were identical.
- Torque: check both the value and listed rpm. Torque figures from different makers do not, by themselves, tell you which motorcycle will feel more responsive in your riding conditions.
- Transmission: note the listed gearbox information where available. The Classic 350 India page specifies five speeds; the figures cited here do not provide a comparable transmission detail for every model.
Use those figures to shortlist candidates and to ask informed questions, not to predict exactly how they will behave. Do not infer overtaking ability, comfortable cruising speed or real-world acceleration from capacity or a single output figure alone. A test ride is the practical way to assess how the engine and controls suit your use, subject to local availability and licensing requirements.
Check riding position and control reach in person
Ergonomics are personal: the same seat, handlebar and foot-control layout can feel different to riders with different proportions, flexibility and preferences. Honda describes the GB350S as having an upright riding position, wide handlebars, a low seat and a low centre of gravity. Those are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not independent ergonomic measurements or proof that the bike will fit every rider.

Whenever possible, sit on each shortlisted bike and arrange a test ride. A brief showroom sit can reveal obvious reach or contact issues; a ride adds a chance to assess how the motorcycle feels in motion. Check the whole riding position rather than judging by seat height alone.
Use a repeatable fit check
- Settle into your normal riding posture. Do not force yourself into a pose simply because a bike looks traditional or a manufacturer describes its position as upright.
- Check your hands and upper body. Notice whether you can reach the bars and controls naturally, and whether your wrists and shoulders feel strained or relaxed.
- Check your legs and hips. Assess knee and hip comfort in the position you will actually use. A static sit is only an initial check; a ride may reveal discomfort that takes time to notice.
- Assess stopping confidence. At a standstill, consider whether you feel secure managing the bike and making stops. Do not treat one seat-height number as a guarantee of ground contact for every rider.
- Try low-speed manoeuvres on a test ride where possible. Pay attention to balance and confidence in tight turns and at walking pace. These practical impressions cannot be read directly from a specification sheet.
Honda UK lists an 800 mm seat height for the GB350S 2025 model. Treat that as a published measurement for that specific model and market, not as a universal fit rule. If you are comparing seat heights, make sure you are comparing the same type of measurement and the correct year and variant; then confirm the result by sitting on the bike.
Read weight figures carefully, then assess the bike at low speed
Weight can be a useful first screen when narrowing a shortlist, especially if you are concerned about moving or parking a motorcycle. But a published figure is only meaningful when you know what the manufacturer calls it. Honda UK lists 178 kg kerb weight for the 2025 GB350S; Triumph India lists 179 kg wet weight for the Speed 400. The markets, model years and weight labels differ. Unless the manufacturers establish a common convention, do not treat those numbers as a like-for-like measurement or conclude that the motorcycles weigh virtually the same under identical conditions.

Even comparable specification figures cannot answer how easy a particular bike will be for you to manoeuvre. If you can, assess how it feels when upright, when balanced at a stop and while making slow turns during a test ride or other permitted demonstration. Consider your usual parking situation and whether you may need to move the bike by hand. Your own confidence and control matter more than a small paper difference whose measurement basis is unclear.
Make weight comparisons useful
- Record the maker’s exact term—such as kerb or wet weight—and avoid silently treating different labels as equivalent.
- Match the model year and market before comparing figures. Variants and regional specifications can differ.
- Ask what is included in the stated weight if the manufacturer’s information does not make it clear.
- Use the number to focus your shortlist, then make a hands-on assessment rather than assuming it predicts low-speed handling.
Compare real-world ownership costs, not just the list price
There is no universal figure for what a retro roadster costs to run. Your location, insurance profile, mileage, fuel price, maintenance schedule and the bike’s condition all affect the total. Build an estimate using quotes and rules that apply to you instead of relying on a general claim that one engine class or styling category is “cheap to run.”
Build a local cost estimate
- Purchase and finance: record the price for the exact local model, year and variant. If financing, include the relevant financing cost in your own budget rather than comparing only advertised cash prices.
- Insurance: request a personal quote for each serious candidate. A general estimate cannot establish your premium.
- Fuel: estimate your expected use with a local fuel price and your own likely mileage. Keep manufacturer test-cycle figures separate from actual-use expectations.
- Scheduled servicing: find the service schedule for the precise model year and variant, then ask local dealers or qualified service providers for applicable prices.
- Consumables and wear items: account for the items and replacement work relevant to your use. Do not assume all motorcycles have the same replacement intervals or costs.
- Repairs, tax and inspections: allow for repairs and check the rules and fees where the bike will be registered. Requirements differ by jurisdiction.
One government-hosted motorcycle associations operating manual advises planned preventive maintenance in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations to optimise fuel consumption and operating costs. For a buyer, the practical implication is to use the service schedule for the exact motorcycle and year when budgeting. Do not substitute a generic interval or assume two retro-styled bikes have the same servicing needs.

Use fuel-economy claims with their test method attached
Honda UK’s GB350S 2025 specification lists fuel consumption of 2.5 L/100 km, also expressed as 38 km/L, under WMTC mode. That is the manufacturer’s test-cycle figure for the listed model, not a promise of the economy an individual rider will achieve. Treat it as a published reference point, not a guaranteed household budget number. For a personal estimate, use your expected mileage and local fuel prices, and leave room for variation between the test-cycle result and your own use.

Specifications and listed prices are attached to a market and model year. Honda UK’s page for the 2025 GB350S lists a price of £3,999. That dated UK page figure is not a current dealer quote for every location, and it should not be applied to another market or model year. The cited Royal Enfield Classic 350 figures come from its India product page, while the cited Speed 400 torque and weight figures come from Triumph India. A UK Parliament written answer dated 8 June 2026 listed motorcycle Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates from £27 for zero-emission motorcycles and motorcycles up to 150cc to £125 for motorcycles of 600cc and above. These are the rates stated in that answer for the UK and its date, not a universal tax schedule or a substitute for checking current rules. The displacement bracket is one element of that specific UK tax information; it does not make engine capacity a sufficient basis for choosing a bike overall.
Compare a shortlist on equal terms
Once you have two or more candidates, put their specifications and local ownership figures side by side. Fill the comparison with the exact market and model year you can buy. If a value is unavailable or the makers use incompatible definitions, preserve that difference instead of inventing a common basis.
| Comparison point | What to record | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | Displacement, stated power and torque, units, and rpm where provided | Use the figures to understand specification differences; do not treat them as a controlled performance test. |
| Fit | Seat height where published, bar and control reach, leg position, stopping confidence | Use the published measurement for screening, then sit on and test ride the bike if possible. |
| Weight | Published value and the maker’s label, such as kerb or wet weight | Compare only with the definitions and conditions made clear; assess low-speed confidence in person. |
| Fuel economy | Claimed figure, unit and test method | Keep the test-cycle value distinct from your expected real-world use. |
| Purchase | Local price for the exact year and variant | Verify current availability and obtain a local quote. |
| Running costs | Personal insurance quote, service costs, expected fuel use, wear, tax and inspection costs | Use local costs and applicable rules rather than a universal estimate. |

| Triumph Speed 400, India | 32 Nm; 179 kg wet weight | Figures are from Triumph India’s specification page. Confirm local-market specification and price; wet weight is not labelled on the same basis as Honda’s kerb weight. |
The table is not a ranking. It puts published figures in view while keeping their market, measurement labels and limitations attached. It does not establish which motorcycle accelerates better, is more comfortable, or costs less to own in a particular country.
Make the final choice with a short decision sequence
- Choose your use case. Identify the roads, speeds, distance and manoeuvring demands that describe your routine.
- Screen specifications. Compare displacement, power, torque and seat height, while checking units, rpm, model year and market.
- Check fit. Sit on the bikes and assess control reach, upper-body comfort, legs, stopping confidence and low-speed manoeuvring.
- Compare weight honestly. Keep the maker’s weight definition with each figure and do not assume unlike labels are equivalent.
- Price ownership locally. Collect purchase, insurance, fuel, service, wear-item, tax, inspection and repair estimates relevant to you.
- Choose the bike that works as a whole. Give greater weight to a confident fit and a credible local budget than to a single specification or styling detail.
If a candidate looks right but has not been tested in the way you will ride it, treat that uncertainty as unresolved rather than filling it with a specification-sheet guess. Published specifications help you narrow the field; the final decision depends on a fit you can manage and costs you can verify for your circumstances.
