The right choice depends on whether you mainly follow road directions, imported GPX routes or courses, or a rally roadbook—and on the exact KTM model year, fitment, and power setup.
First decide what kind of navigation you need
“Rally navigation” can mean different things. Before buying hardware, identify how you actually receive and follow a route:
- Road turn-by-turn: You want directions along roads. KTMconnect Turn-by-Turn+ is one option on supported models.
- Downloaded GPX tracks or courses: You want to follow a route you have imported. A phone app or a dedicated GPS may suit this, but confirm the chosen device and app handle your files as you expect.
- Rally roadbook navigation: You need to work through roadbook instructions, potentially with dedicated controls. The available product information does not establish a complete paperless roadbook workflow across these three setups; verify the specific app, controls, and compatibility before relying on one for competition.
These are not interchangeable workflows. KTM’s Turn-by-Turn+ claim is for navigation through its connected app; Garmin documents route, course, and activity functions on Montana devices. Neither fact alone proves support for every GPX file or a competition roadbook.
Compare the three setup paths

When KTMconnect on the TFT makes sense
KTM’s 2026 890 Adventure R Rally page specifies a 5-inch TFT that connects by Bluetooth to KTMconnect for Turn-by-Turn+ navigation, music, and calls. KTM describes it this way: “Bluetooth connectivity links to the KTMconnect app for Turn‑by‑Turn+ navigation, music, and calls, keeping your focus on the ride.” KTM’s product page
This is a straightforward choice if your exact bike supports the feature and road-style directions meet your needs. Do not assume that other Adventure model years or trims have the same capability, or that Turn-by-Turn+ replaces a GPX track or rally roadbook workflow. Check the owner’s manual and local app availability for your bike.

When a mounted smartphone makes sense
A phone setup suits riders who prefer a navigation app they already use and want it visible on the bike. The mount is not a generic fitment decision: KTM lists smartphone adapter A62412992020 with an SPC+ system and fitments for selected model years and variants. KTM smartphone adapter listing
KTM’s GPS-bracket catalog and fitment listings also specify particular 790 and 890 Adventure versions rather than establishing universal compatibility. - Plan for charging and battery use based on your phone and installation. The cited fitment information does not establish one universal power arrangement.
- Do not assume a particular phone weather or vibration rating from the mount listing. Check the phone maker’s guidance and decide whether your route and mounting position call for additional protection.
When a dedicated GPS makes sense
A dedicated unit is worth considering when you want a separate mapping device or need route/course functions beyond the factory TFT path. Garmin’s Montana documentation distinguishes activities, routes, and courses; saved courses can follow a direct path or roads and trails with recalculation, depending on the selected behavior. Montana: check mount, rating, and runtime together
Garmin describes the Montana 700i as having a glove-friendly 5-inch touchscreen and mapping, with vehicle mounts—including motorcycle mounts—available separately. That runtime is Garmin’s estimate, not a guaranteed motorcycle runtime; use, brightness, temperature, charging, and conditions can affect endurance. Tread: verify the generation and installation bundle
Garmin positions its Tread family for off-road use. Its cited Tread product page identifies a 5.5-inch touchscreen and IPX7 rating for that model; check the exact generation rather than applying those specifications to every Tread edition. - Identify the exact Adventure model, model year, trim, and market; use the VIN if a parts catalog offers VIN-based confirmation.
- Look up the KTM GPS-bracket part number for that bike rather than assuming a bracket for one 790 or 890 fits another.
- Confirm that the smartphone adapter or GPS mount matches that bracket and your selected device.
- Check whether the needed mounting and power parts are included, especially for a dedicated GPS installation.
- Verify the current owner’s manual and regional app support if you plan to use the bike’s integrated navigation.

Make the choice by your route and cockpit
- Mostly road directions, supported bike: Start with KTMconnect Turn-by-Turn+ if your bike and region support it.
- Familiar app and flexible phone use: Choose a smartphone setup after confirming the bike bracket, adapter, phone fit, and power plan.
- Standalone mapping or device-specific route/course behavior: Compare dedicated GPS models and verify mount, power, route handling, and included hardware.
- Rally roadbook competition: Treat roadbook support as a separate requirement. Confirm the actual software and controls; the cited product information does not establish a complete paperless workflow for every option.
