Shortlist vehicles that fit those needs, verify the exact model year and trim for safety and operating details, then test-drive them on roads and in conditions like your everyday driving.
Start with the drives and tasks the car must handle
Before comparing models, write down what a normal week looks like. A sedan that feels ideal on a quiet test route may be frustrating in stop-and-go traffic, a tight garage, or regular trips with adults in the back.
- Commute: Note typical distance, traffic, highway speeds, and how often you make short trips.
- Passengers: Consider who rides with you regularly, how much rear-seat room they need, and whether child seats must fit.
- Cargo: Identify what you carry often, such as luggage, a stroller, or work equipment. Trunk opening and shape matter as well as capacity.
- Parking and roads: Check garage and driveway dimensions, common parking spaces, pavement quality, and any need for seasonal traction.
- Charging: If considering a plug-in hybrid or EV, establish whether charging at home or work is practical and how often you take longer trips.
These constraints are more useful than a broad label such as “midsize” or “large.” They let you eliminate cars that do not fit before spending time on trim comparisons.
Choose a powertrain that suits your routine
Luxury sedans may offer gasoline, hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, or battery-electric powertrains, but availability varies by model and market. For a U.S.-market example, BMW lists gasoline, plug-in-hybrid, and all-electric 5 Series variants; Lexus presents hybrid and battery-electric versions of its 2026 ES. Check the current lineup for the exact model year rather than assuming every powertrain is offered in every trim.

- Gasoline: A conventional choice if you do not want charging to shape your routine. Compare fuel estimates for the precise engine, drivetrain, and wheel configuration; BMW cautions that actual mileage varies and some listed figures are preliminary.
- Hybrid: Consider it if you want an electrified option without relying on plug-in charging. Compare the available version’s fuel-use information and equipment with the non-hybrid alternatives.
- Plug-in hybrid: Make sure charging access and your usual trip pattern justify considering one. Check how the vehicle operates when its battery charge is depleted as well as its electric-driving claims.
- Battery electric: Assess charging at home or work, charging availability on regular longer routes, and how temperature and your driving conditions affect practical use. A manufacturer’s range estimate is not a guarantee of the distance you will achieve.
Lexus lists an EPA-estimated 307-mile range for the 2026 ES 350e and identifies that version as front-wheel drive. Lexus also describes a 10%–80% charge in approximately 30 minutes under ideal DC fast-charging conditions. Treat both figures as manufacturer information for that vehicle, not a promise for every trip or charging session; confirm final specifications and the exact trim at the Lexus ES specifications page and review the 2026 ES announcement.
Check safety by model year, test, and equipment
Do not assume two luxury sedans—or two model years of the same sedan—have interchangeable safety results. Review crashworthiness and crash-avoidance information for the exact vehicle you are shopping for, and distinguish standard equipment from optional features.

What the current examples show
For the U.S.-market 2025 BMW 5 Series, IIHS reports Good ratings for small-overlap front and updated side crash tests, Good headlights, and Good standard pedestrian front-crash prevention. Its page lists standard blind-spot detection and lane-departure warning and identifies the vehicle as a 2025 Top Safety Pick. For the U.S.-market 2025 Lexus ES 350, IIHS reports Good small-overlap front, Marginal updated moderate-overlap front, Acceptable updated side, Good headlights, and Good standard pedestrian front-crash prevention. The page also lists standard blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning/prevention, and rear automatic braking. IIHS’s 2025 Top Safety Pick criteria require specified crash-test results, acceptable-or-good standard headlights, and acceptable-or-good pedestrian front-crash prevention. An award can help screen candidates, but it does not replace checking the test results and equipment on the exact model year and trim. The IIHS 2025 award criteria explain the requirements.
Verify cabin fit, trunk usability, and parking dimensions
Try the space with the people and items you actually carry. Sit in the front and rear seats, check access and headroom, and test child-seat installation if needed. Put representative cargo in the trunk and examine the opening and shape; a published volume figure alone does not tell you whether bulky items will fit conveniently.

Dimensions are useful for screening, but do not substitute for parking the car at home. BMW lists the 5 Series at 199.2 inches long. Lexus says the redesigned 2026 ES is 6.5 inches longer overall and has a 3.1-inch longer wheelbase than its predecessor, with increased rear space. Test-drive in conditions that resemble your week
- Set up the driving position. Adjust the seat and steering wheel, then check support, visibility, and whether frequently used controls are easy to reach without distraction.
- Drive a representative route. Include the kind of traffic and road surface you encounter, plus highway speed if it is part of your commute. Pay attention to ride, noise, and acceleration response.
- Test passenger space. Bring regular passengers or have someone of similar size try the rear seat. Confirm child-seat installation if relevant.
- Try your cargo. Bring typical items or measure them, and check the trunk opening and usable shape.
- Test parking and maneuvering. If possible, park in your garage or a comparable space. Check visibility, turning and parking aids, and clearance with the mirrors included.
- Check electrified-car logistics. For a hybrid or EV, consider your commute’s energy needs, home or workplace charging, longer-trip charging stops, and temperature conditions.
- Confirm the exact equipment. Match the safety features and specifications to the model year and trim on the vehicle you would buy.
Get real ownership numbers for your location
Before choosing, request purchase, financing, insurance, service, and tire costs for the specific car and trim in your area. These costs can differ by location and configuration, so national or generic comparisons cannot establish what your ownership costs will be. For fuel economy, range, dimensions, and curb weight, use the manufacturer’s current specifications for the exact configuration and verify applicable fuel-economy information through the official government label.
