No feature guarantees that a camera will capture every incident or preserve every useful detail.
What to verify before choosing a camera
Compare the functions that matter to you rather than relying on labels such as “GPS,” “G-sensor,” or “parking mode.” Manufacturer controls and compatibility vary by model. The manuals cited here document particular products, not a universal standard or an independent reliability ranking.
- Speed data: Does the camera store GPS-derived speed with the clip, display it on video, or make it available in playback? Can you enable GPS recording and select your preferred units?
- Driving-event protection: What detects an impact, how is sensitivity adjusted, and what happens to the resulting clip?
- Manual locking: Can you protect footage yourself, and where does the camera store it? Is there a limit, and can protected footage eventually be overwritten?
- Parking recording: Does it record on motion, on impact, at intervals, continuously, or from a pre-event buffer?
- Power and battery protection: What accessory does the camera need while the vehicle is off, and can you set a voltage or time cutoff?
- Coverage and detail: Does the camera’s view and footage detail suit the driving conditions you care about? The sources available here do not compare image quality between models.
- Storage and retrieval: Which cards are compatible, how are ordinary and protected clips handled, and how do you export and check a recording?
Confirm that GPS records speed with the video
GPS on a feature list does not by itself establish that speed is saved in a useful way. Check the exact model’s manual for whether GPS-derived speed is stored as a video overlay, is available as playback data, or both. Also confirm that GPS recording is enabled and that you can choose the units you want.
BlackVue’s DR970X Plus Series II app guide documents GPS tracking for vehicle location and speed, a setting to display speed on video, and a control to turn GPS location recording off for privacy. It also documents speed-unit selection. Those controls are specific to the cited camera series; check your own model’s manual rather than assuming another manufacturer handles GPS the same way. After installation, review a sample clip or playback to confirm the data appears as expected. A live speed display alone is not proof that speed is saved with recorded footage.
Check both event detection and file preservation
Incident recording has two distinct jobs: recognizing an event and keeping the resulting footage available. A G-sensor or similar trigger can flag a clip, but protection depends on how the camera handles that file. Check both behaviors in the manual.

Set event sensitivity for your vehicle and roads
Sensitivity that is too low may fail to trigger for some events; sensitivity that is too high can flag routine bumps and consume limited protected-file space. Manufacturers provide different controls, and there is no universal ideal setting established by the cited documentation. Use the model’s instructions and review how often ordinary driving is triggering protected clips.
Learn the manual lock control
A manual lock gives you another way to preserve footage when you recognize an event but the automatic trigger does not respond as expected. VIOFO describes locking with a camera button or optional Bluetooth remote; it says a voice notification or yellow mark indicates that a video is protected. Find out where locked clips are stored and whether the camera limits their number or eventually overwrites them. A lock is useful, but it is not a substitute for exporting footage you need to keep.
Choose a parking mode by what it captures
“Parking mode” can describe different recording methods. Each captures different material, and a mode that records only after a trigger may not preserve what happened immediately beforehand.

VIOFO’s guide to Advanced Buffered Parking Mode describes a 15-second pre-event and 30-second post-event sequence for supported cameras. It lists a 5-second buffer for the T130 and WM1, and excludes the A129 PLUS from its compatibility list. These are manufacturer-published details for the products listed on that page, not timings that apply to all dash cams. Confirm current compatibility and firmware documentation for the exact camera. Recording while the car is off may require a separate, compatible power accessory. Do not assume the camera’s ordinary USB power cable enables every parking mode.

Garmin’s Dash Cam 46/56/66W manual says the cited parked-recording feature requires its parking-mode cable accessory. It describes the setting as one that “Allows the camera to record video while the vehicle is parked and turned off, and sets the amount of time the camera remains active while parked.” The manual also notes regional availability and user responsibility concerning privacy. For any candidate, verify that the power kit fits both the camera and your vehicle, and understand how its cutoff works before relying on parked recording. Installation requirements differ by vehicle and accessory.
Understand storage, overwriting, and retrieval
Storage policy affects whether footage remains available after a drive or event. Garmin’s cited manual describes deleting the oldest unsaved video when the card is full and warns that formatting deletes all files. Those rules are specific to the documented models; consult the manual for the camera you are buying to learn what happens to ordinary clips, event clips, and manually locked files.
- Check the camera maker’s card compatibility and capacity requirements; there is no universal card size established for all dash cams.
- Learn which footage is loop-recorded, which is protected, and whether either category can be overwritten.
- Locate the export or playback workflow before you need it. After an important event, export the clip promptly and verify it on another device.
- Do not format a card until you understand that formatting can erase its contents.
A practical selection and setup checklist
- Read the exact model’s manual. Confirm that GPS-derived speed is stored with the clip or available in playback, not merely shown live.
- Set GPS preferences. Enable GPS recording if desired, select the speed units you use, and review a sample clip or playback after installation.
- Review event settings. Find the G-sensor or other trigger and choose a sensitivity that does not routinely lock ordinary bumps while remaining suitable for your driving conditions.
- Test manual locking. Locate the button or remote, learn the confirmation cue, and check where the protected file appears.
- Match parking mode to the footage you need. Identify whether it records on motion, impact, at intervals, continuously, or from a pre-event buffer; verify exact buffer timings and model compatibility.
- Confirm the power setup. Check whether parked recording needs a separate cable or hardwire kit, whether it is compatible with the camera and vehicle, and how voltage and timer cutoffs behave.
- Verify storage and retrieval. Use a compatible card, learn overwrite and formatting behavior, and practice exporting a clip.
Parking recording can raise privacy issues, and rules vary by location. Garmin’s manual flags regional availability and user responsibility; check applicable local requirements before enabling a mode that records while parked.
