Check the VIN, not just the model and year
A search by model year, make and model can show general recall information, but it cannot establish whether a particular vehicle has an open recall. Use the VIN-specific search at NHTSA’s recall lookup to see recall information associated with that vehicle. NHTSA says the VIN is visible at the lower-left corner of the windshield; it may also be listed on the vehicle’s registration or insurance documents.

For the headlamp campaign described below, ask about Ford 24C04 / NHTSA 24E023. If you are checking an Expedition, use its VIN too: the fact that the located headlamp notice does not list Expedition does not establish that the vehicle has no other open recall.

A model-level result answers a broad question such as whether recalls have been announced for a particular year and model. It is not a vehicle-specific determination. VIN lookup is the more relevant first step when the question is whether your truck or SUV has an unrepaired campaign recorded against it. The distinction matters especially for 24C04: Ford’s notice concerns certain Super Duty vehicles with a particular service history, not every vehicle in the named model years.

Do not infer eligibility from a trim, headlamp appearance, or a model-year search. The notice ties the concern to specified high-series LED service replacement headlamps previously installed on certain trucks. A VIN-specific result and a dealer’s check of the vehicle’s record are more useful than trying to decide from the headlamps’ appearance or from the model name alone.
Which vehicles the headlamp recall identifies
Ford’s April 2024 equipment recall notice identifies certain 2018–2019 Super Duty vehicles that had previously been repaired using specific high-series LED service replacement headlamps. The lamps were manufactured from May 5 through December 30, 2021. The notice does not make every 2018–2019 Super Duty eligible, and it does not identify Expedition as part of this headlamp recall. Eligibility depends on the vehicle-specific record and the replacement lamp involved—not simply the model name or year.
Ford lists these five service part numbers for the replacement headlamps associated with the recall:

These numbers identify parts in the recall notice; they are not a recommendation to buy replacement lamps. If you do not know whether qualifying service lamps were installed, ask a Ford dealer to check the VIN and repair history rather than trying to determine eligibility from the vehicle’s model year alone. What the service-part detail means for owners
The listed numbers are useful identifiers when discussing the campaign, but they do not mean an owner should inspect parts and make a repair decision independently. The recall turns on whether a vehicle received the specified service replacement equipment and whether the vehicle-specific record meets Ford’s criteria. If you have an invoice from a previous headlamp repair, keep it available when you call; it may help describe the vehicle’s service history. The dealer should confirm the record and determine whether an inspection is required.
Conversely, not knowing the part number does not prevent you from checking. You can begin with the VIN and ask the dealer whether its records show a previous replacement involving the lamps named in 24C04. If you bought the vehicle used or do not have its earlier service paperwork, avoid assuming either that the lamps were replaced or that they were not. Have Ford or the dealer check the vehicle-specific information.

How Expedition fits into this check
The identified April 2024 headlamp notice names certain 2018–2019 Super Duty vehicles; it does not list Expedition as part of that campaign. That is a narrow statement about this particular headlamp recall, not a guarantee that an Expedition has no recalls. Expedition owners should enter their own VIN in NHTSA’s lookup and contact Ford about any unrepaired recall that appears. Do not transfer Super Duty eligibility criteria to an Expedition or assume that the same lamp, model year, or campaign applies.

What the recall says about the risk and remedy
Ford says the replacement headlamps may not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 and may be too bright. The concern is that excessive brightness could affect other drivers’ vision and increase crash risk. This describes the specified replacement lamps covered by this equipment recall; it is not a claim that every headlamp on every Super Duty or Expedition has the problem.
Ford’s notice states: “Our records indicate that your vehicle was repaired using certain high series LED service replacement headlamps that may not comply with the requirements of FMVSS 108.” The wording points to a prior repair and specified replacement equipment. It is not a notice that every original-equipment headlamp, every LED lamp, or every vehicle in the model range fails the standard.
Ford authorized dealers to inspect the vehicle and, if needed, replace one or both high-series LED front headlamps at no charge. Call a Ford dealer, provide the VIN and ask whether the vehicle is included in 24C04 and how to arrange the inspection. Do not buy a lamp as a substitute for the recall remedy: the dealer’s inspection determines whether replacement is required.
The practical sequence is straightforward: verify the VIN, ask the dealer to check the campaign status, and arrange the authorized inspection if Ford’s record says it applies. The remedy is not a universal instruction to replace both lamps; Ford says inspection will determine whether one or both need replacement. The notice authorizes the inspection and any required replacement without charge. If a dealer confirms an open campaign, ask what appointment or service arrangements are needed rather than purchasing parts or arranging unrelated work as a substitute.

What the free remedy does—and does not—mean
“Free” refers to Ford’s authorized recall inspection and, if required, replacement of one or both affected front headlamps under this campaign. It does not mean every owner can request a new lamp regardless of eligibility, nor does the notice recommend buying a replacement part first. Eligibility and the need for work are determined through the vehicle’s record and dealer inspection.
If the dealer says the vehicle is not included, ask whether that conclusion is based on the VIN and campaign record. If you have paperwork showing that the specified service lamps may have been installed, mention it and ask Ford to review the history. Keep the conversation focused on 24C04 / 24E023 so the dealer can distinguish this headlamp issue from other recalls or ordinary repair concerns.
If NHTSA’s lookup shows no open recall
A clear result is not proof that a recall was never performed or that no newly announced recall could apply. NHTSA says its VIN lookup does not show recalls that have already been repaired, and a newly announced recall may not yet appear for every affected VIN while the manufacturer identifies the full set of vehicles. If you have reason to think specified replacement headlamps were installed on a 2018–2019 Super Duty, contact Ford or a dealer with the VIN even if the lookup does not show an open 24C04 entry.

It may mean the lookup does not show an unrepaired recall for that VIN; it does not tell you that the vehicle has never been recalled. A recall that has already been completed generally will not appear as open in the VIN lookup. In addition, NHTSA notes that some newly announced recall records may not yet include every VIN while the manufacturer is identifying the affected vehicles. If the vehicle’s prior repair history makes 24C04 relevant, use Ford or dealer channels to clarify rather than treating a clean lookup as conclusive.
NHTSA also says recalls do not expire, but its VIN lookup generally does not display recalls more than 15 years old unless the manufacturer offers more coverage. NHTSA puts it plainly: “Once a vehicle has been recalled, that recall never expires.” This is a distinction between a recall’s existence and what a particular online lookup displays. A display limit is not the same as a recall expiring, and the 15-year limit is unlikely to be the issue for the 2018–2019 vehicles named in this headlamp notice.

Use alerts and ask about a past repair
Get notified about recalls
NHTSA’s free SaferCar app can alert owners when it discovers a recall for a vehicle and VIN they entered. NHTSA recommends checking recalls regularly as well. An alert is a useful prompt to verify a recall, but the VIN-specific record and the manufacturer or dealer are the channels to use to confirm eligibility and arrange service.

Keep the vehicle and VIN information accurate when adding a vehicle, and treat a notification as a reason to read the campaign details and follow up. If a notice concerns a different campaign, do not assume the headlamp-specific remedy or driving statement for 24C04 applies to it.
If you already paid for a repair
Ford’s notice says an owner who previously paid for a repair addressing this issue may be eligible for reimbursement, subject to Ford’s requirements. Keep the original repair receipt and ask a Ford dealer or Ford’s Customer Relationship Center how to submit it and what documentation is currently required. Reimbursement is not automatic; Ford must determine whether the prior repair meets its eligibility rules.
This is a separate question from whether a current recall appears open. If you paid to address the same headlamp issue before learning about the campaign, keep the original receipt and explain the repair when you contact Ford. The notice describes submitting the receipt to a dealer or contacting Ford’s Customer Relationship Center, but reimbursement depends on the individual repair and Ford’s eligibility and documentation requirements. Confirm current instructions directly with Ford rather than assuming that any headlamp expense qualifies.
