How to Check Whether Your Car’s Infotainment System Has a Security Update

Check the version on your car’s infotainment screen, verify eligibility and release details through the automaker, and follow only the update route supported for your exact vehicle.

Check the software version on the vehicle’s infotainment screen, then verify its update eligibility and release information through the automaker’s official owner or update channel for your exact vehicle and market. A screen that says “up to date” does not, by itself, confirm that a particular security vulnerability has been fixed.

What checking for a security update can—and cannot—tell you

An infotainment system is software running in a vehicle, and an automaker may issue software updates for different reasons. Some releases add or change features; others may address security issues. The update screen or version number can help you identify what is installed, but it does not necessarily explain what a release changes or whether it addresses a particular vulnerability.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

NHTSA defines automotive cybersecurity as “the protection of automotive electronic systems, communication networks, control algorithms, software, users, and underlying data from malicious attacks, damage, unauthorized access, or manipulation.” That broad definition helps explain why a software update may matter, but it does not mean every infotainment update is a security patch—or that every security fix appears as a separate, clearly labeled update.

There is no single menu path or update schedule for all vehicles. The available route and the meaning of a displayed status depend on the make, model year, system generation, equipment, market, connectivity, and sometimes a connected-services subscription. Treat the instructions and update information for your own vehicle as authoritative.

It is also useful to separate three questions: what version is installed, whether a newer release is available for your vehicle, and whether that release addresses a particular security concern. The screen may answer the first and sometimes the second. Official release information or confirmation from the manufacturer or an authorized dealer may be needed for the third.

What to have ready before you check

Gather the vehicle details that the maker’s owner portal, update site, manual, or support team may need. If the vehicle has a built-in software-information screen, record the version exactly as displayed rather than relying on memory.

  • Make, model, and model year.
  • Country or market where the vehicle is registered or was sold. Eligibility and software releases can differ by market.
  • Infotainment or navigation system generation, if shown in the manual or on the vehicle’s information screen.
  • The displayed software version, update status, update history, and any error message.
  • The VIN, if the official owner channel or an authorized dealer needs to identify the vehicle’s configuration.

Menu names vary. Look in the owner’s manual for the exact system, or search the vehicle’s settings for wording such as “Software Info/Update,” “System info,” “What’s new,” or “Check for updates.” These are examples of labels used in manufacturer materials, not a universal menu path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the full version string, including punctuation or letters, if the screen provides one. Two versions with similar-looking numbers may not refer to the same system or release. Also note whether the vehicle identifies its navigation and infotainment software separately; do not assume that one version field describes every software component in the car.

Check the version on the vehicle

Start with the infotainment screen. The aim is to establish what software the vehicle reports as installed and whether it displays a pending update, a recent update, or an error. Do not assume that a version number alone identifies a security fix: you will need the official release information or confirmation from the maker or dealer to understand what applies.

  1. Open the system settings. Use the vehicle’s manual to locate the software, system-information, or update menu for that model and system generation.
  2. Record the installed version. Copy the full version string and any date or update-history details shown. If the screen displays an update message, note its wording.
  3. Check for a displayed update option or status. Follow the vehicle’s on-screen instructions only if you are ready to meet its stated connectivity, parking, and installation conditions.
  4. Keep the details for verification. The version, VIN, and exact message will help the official owner channel, manufacturer, or authorized dealer check eligibility and troubleshoot an unclear result.

For example, cited Hyundai materials show a path through Home > Settings > General > Software info/update for OTA progress, and System info > What’s new for update details. A cited Kia manual uses Setup > General > Software Info/Update and points to System Info > What’s New for update details. These are model-specific examples, not instructions for other vehicles; even within a make, labels and procedures can vary by system and market.

If you cannot find a matching label, avoid selecting an unfamiliar option or following a menu path meant for another model. Check the manual for the vehicle’s system generation, or use the maker’s support channel to ask where that vehicle displays its software information. The goal at this stage is to record status, not to force an update or reset the system.

Verify whether an update applies to your vehicle

Next, use the automaker’s official owner portal, app, or software-update site. Enter the vehicle details requested and confirm that the information is for the correct country or market. Check whether the vehicle is eligible, whether a current release or campaign applies to its model and installed version, and whether the maker identifies the release’s purpose or contents.

Automaker materials describe different availability rules. Volkswagen’s owner information, for example, describes wireless updates for eligible vehicles and directs owners to version information. That does not establish eligibility for every Volkswagen, or for vehicles in every market. Verify your own vehicle through its official channel rather than generalizing from another model’s instructions.

When comparing a release listing with the information on your screen, check that you are looking at the same model year, system, market, and version range. A page describing an update for another system generation—or for another market—may be useful background but does not confirm that the release applies to your vehicle. Where the official site offers a VIN-based check, use it; otherwise, ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to clarify applicability.

If you are checking because of a known or suspected security issue, ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer whether the applicable release addresses that issue. A version number, “up to date” message, or generic update notice is not proof that a specific vulnerability has been fixed. Release contents vary; look for official notes that identify the relevant change, or request clarification from the maker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also verify the authenticity of update notices. In a March 17, 2016 public-service announcement, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center advised consumers to verify that a manufacturer’s software-update notification is authentic and to take appropriate steps to ensure the vehicle system is up to date. A message or download that cannot be confirmed through the maker’s official channel should not be treated as trustworthy.

Use a link or contact route you can independently confirm as belonging to the automaker, such as its official owner website, app, manual, or support information. If an email, message, or pop-up urges you to download a file from an unfamiliar site, do not treat urgency or vehicle-specific language as proof that it is genuine. Confirm the notice through the manufacturer before acting.

Choose only an update route supported by the vehicle

Vehicles may offer an over-the-air update, an official USB installation, or both. Availability and requirements are vehicle-specific. Use the comparison below to decide what to verify—not to assume that a route is available for your car.

Route What to check Important qualification
Over the air (OTA) Whether the exact vehicle is eligible; required network access; any connected-services requirement; and the on-screen installation conditions. Eligibility can depend on equipment, connectivity, market, and subscription status. A connected-services requirement documented for one make or model must not be assumed for another.
Official USB update Whether the maker supports USB for the vehicle; the correct official update files; the prescribed drive, folder, data-port, and installation procedure. USB is an alternative for some vehicles, not a universal fallback. Use only files and instructions supplied through the automaker’s official update channel.
Manufacturer or authorized-dealer help Whether a release applies to the VIN and installed version; what it changes; and what to do if an update fails or the status is unclear. This is the appropriate escalation when the vehicle’s status cannot be confirmed or a security fix needs specific confirmation.

When more than one route is offered, compare the vehicle’s eligibility, any OTA network or subscription requirement, whether the manufacturer explicitly supports USB as an alternative, what the release notes say, and which functions are unavailable while installing. These are practical differences, not a ranking: the route the maker supports for your vehicle is the one to follow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using an over-the-air update

If the manual or official update page confirms OTA support, follow the vehicle’s own prompts and connectivity requirements. The requirements can include network access and an active connected-services subscription, depending on the vehicle. For example, cited Hyundai guidance says its wireless update function requires network access and a Bluelink subscription; cited Kia guidance specifies Kia Connect where equipped. Those statements are specific to the described systems and do not establish requirements for other makes.

A subscription or connection requirement can affect whether an update check or installation is available, so verify it before concluding that no update exists. Conversely, an active subscription does not establish that every release is available for every vehicle. The automaker’s eligibility information and the vehicle’s prompts determine what applies.

If wireless updating is unavailable or fails, do not assume the vehicle can switch to USB. Confirm the supported alternative in the official instructions. Hyundai’s cited material describes USB as a fallback in certain cases, and Kia’s cited manual says a USB update may be needed if wireless updating fails. The maker’s guidance for the exact vehicle determines what to do.

Using a USB update

Some manufacturers document USB as an official installation route. Honda recommends wireless updating and provides USB as an alternative when the vehicle cannot establish a wireless connection. Hyundai documents an official Navigation Updater workflow for supported USB updates. Neither example means that every model from either make—or any other make—supports USB updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm USB support for the exact vehicle. Check the official update site and vehicle-specific instructions before preparing a drive.
  2. Get the files from the manufacturer’s official update channel. Do not substitute files from a forum, file-sharing platform, or third-party download site.
  3. Follow the vehicle’s stated preparation instructions. Use the specified vehicle-created folder, data port, drive requirements, and file-preparation steps where the maker calls for them. Do not infer a drive capacity or format from another vehicle’s procedure.
  4. Install as directed by the vehicle. Observe the vehicle’s parking, power, and other on-screen conditions. Do not disconnect the drive or interrupt the process unless the maker’s instructions tell you to do so.
  5. Verify the result. After the procedure is complete, check the displayed version or status and compare it with the official release information.

A USB flash drive is useful only if the manufacturer supports that route and specifies compatible requirements. Confirm those requirements before buying or formatting a drive.

USB procedures can involve more than copying a downloaded file. The automaker may require its own update utility, a particular folder structure, a specified data port, or other preparation steps. Follow the instructions for the exact vehicle, and do not assume that a drive that worked on another car will be suitable. If the update site does not clearly identify your vehicle or the correct files, contact the maker rather than guessing.

Follow the installation safety prompts

Before starting any update, read the vehicle’s prompt and manual carefully. Some installations temporarily disable infotainment or other functions, require the vehicle to remain parked, or make remote functions unavailable. Do not plan around a generic estimate of installation time: the cited instructions provide model-specific conditions, not a universal duration.

Restrictions can be substantial. Hyundai’s cited 2026 manual says the vehicle cannot be used during the update, remote functions can be unavailable, and the update cannot be canceled after it starts. Kia warns drivers not to drive until the update completes. These are examples for the cited systems; follow the exact prompt and manual for your vehicle.

  • Start only when you can meet the stated parking and other conditions for the entire procedure.
  • Make sure you understand which vehicle or remote functions may be unavailable during installation.
  • Do not interrupt an update when the vehicle’s instructions say not to.
  • If the prompt is unclear or the vehicle reports a problem, stop and contact the maker or an authorized dealer rather than trying an improvised recovery.

Do not start an installation simply because an update notification appears while you are about to drive. Read the prompt first and wait until the vehicle can remain in the required condition. If the instructions say the update cannot be canceled after starting, treat that as an important planning constraint and begin only when you can comply.

What to do when the answer is unclear or an update fails

If the system reports that it is current but you still need to confirm a particular security fix, contact the automaker or an authorized dealer. Provide the VIN, the full displayed software version, the market, and any update message or error. Ask whether a release applies to that vehicle and whether its official release information confirms that it addresses the concern.

If installation fails, use the manufacturer’s support path. Do not attempt recovery with unofficial files or instructions intended for a different vehicle. The IC3 advises owners to check manufacturer update information, verify update notices, and contact the dealer or manufacturer for help. Hyundai’s cited guidance also directs owners to authorized support for certain failures.

An authorized dealer software check is a reasonable next step when the official online status is unclear, an installation has failed, or you need confirmation tied to the VIN. Have the same details ready that you collected for the online check. Ask what update applies and what it covers; a general assurance that the system is current may not answer a question about a particular security change.

Common situations and the next useful check

What you see What it establishes Next step
The screen shows a software version but no clear update status. You have an installed-version reference, but not confirmation that a newer release applies. Check the official owner or update channel using the exact vehicle and market.
The screen says “up to date.” The displayed status does not, by itself, prove that a particular vulnerability was fixed. Review official release details or ask the manufacturer or dealer about the specific issue.
The official page lists a release, but you cannot tell whether it applies. A general release listing may not establish eligibility for your vehicle configuration or market. Use the VIN and installed version with the maker or an authorized dealer to confirm applicability.
OTA is unavailable or fails. It does not automatically mean USB is supported. Check the official vehicle-specific procedure for a supported alternative and any subscription or connectivity requirements.
A download prompt or file comes from an unfamiliar source. Its authenticity has not been established. Do not install it; verify the notice and download through the automaker’s official channel.
The installation stops, errors, or leaves status uncertain. The software outcome is not confirmed. Record the error and version, then contact the manufacturer or authorized dealer for recovery instructions.

How to make the check repeatable

Keep a short record of the version shown, the date you checked, the official page or support channel consulted, and any update outcome. If you later contact a dealer or the manufacturer, this gives them a precise starting point. Recheck through the official channel when the maker announces an applicable release or when you need to verify a specific security change; there is no single cross-brand schedule or universal menu that can answer that question for every vehicle.

A useful record can be as simple as the vehicle’s model year and market, the software version, the date, whether the official channel listed an applicable release, and the result of any installation. Keep any error wording as displayed. If you speak with support, note the instructions they give and whether they confirm the release applies to the VIN. This reduces confusion if you need to follow up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my car’s infotainment software version?

Open the vehicle’s settings and look for its software-update, software-information, or system-information screen. Menu labels vary by make and system generation; consult the owner’s manual and record the full version and any displayed status or error.

Does “up to date” mean a security vulnerability has been fixed?

Not necessarily. The status may indicate that no update is currently offered through that screen, but it does not prove that a specific vulnerability has been addressed. Check the automaker’s official release details or ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer about the specific issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a USB drive if an over-the-air update is unavailable?

Only if the manufacturer supports USB updates for your exact vehicle. Honda and Hyundai document USB procedures for some vehicles, but that is not a universal fallback. Use only official files and follow the vehicle-specific instructions for the drive, folder, port, and installation.

Why can’t my car find an over-the-air update?

OTA availability can depend on the vehicle’s model, equipment, market, network access, and sometimes an active connected-services subscription. Verify eligibility and requirements through the automaker’s official channel; a requirement documented for one make or model may not apply to another.

What should I do if an infotainment update fails?

Record the error message and displayed software version, then contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer for the supported recovery procedure. Do not try unofficial files, third-party downloads, or instructions intended for another vehicle.

Can I keep driving while the update installs?

That depends on the vehicle and the update. Read its on-screen prompt and manual before starting. Some procedures require the vehicle to remain parked or prohibit driving until installation completes; follow the exact instructions rather than assuming a general rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Record the infotainment version, then check update eligibility and release details through the automaker’s official channel for your exact vehicle and market. Use only a supported OTA or official USB procedure, follow the vehicle’s safety prompts, and contact the maker or an authorized dealer if you need confirmation that a release fixes a specific security issue.
