How to Check Whether Your Car’s Connected Services Depend on 4G LTE

The dependable way to check is through your automaker’s VIN lookup or support team. Verify the network for each feature, because one car may use different systems for different services.

Use your carmaker’s official connected-services page or owner account to check the vehicle by VIN, then verify the exact feature you care about. If the result does not identify its cellular network, ask the automaker or an authorized dealer whether that feature on your vehicle’s configuration uses LTE, 5G, or an older network. An in-car LTE indicator is useful only when the manufacturer documents it for your model; a model year by itself is not a reliable answer.

This matters because one car may use different systems for emergency calling, remote lock and unlock, vehicle status, location, navigation data, and app access. A connected service can also be unavailable because of subscription or service status even when the vehicle has LTE capability. Check the vehicle, feature, and service status separately.

What to check before looking up your car

Start with the particular feature, not the general question of whether the car is “connected.” Write down what you want to keep using: emergency calling (eCall), remote lock or unlock, vehicle location, vehicle-health reports, navigation data, or another app function. Connected features on the same vehicle may depend on different systems, so a general “LTE capable” answer may not tell you whether the function you need will continue working.

Find the vehicle identification number (VIN), usually available in the owner paperwork or through the car’s own information screens. Use the VIN for the official lookup whenever possible. A model name and year can help narrow the question, but they do not establish the network for every trim, market, production date, or equipment configuration. Ford, for example, says available connected services vary by year, model, and trim and can be viewed for a specific VIN in its app or owner account: Ford Connected Services.

  • Record the exact feature and how you use it—for example, “remote door unlock in the phone app,” rather than “connected services.”
  • Have the VIN and, if available, the vehicle’s country of sale and production details ready.
  • Keep service eligibility separate from cellular capability: ask whether the feature is supported on the vehicle, whether it is active, and whether a subscription or other account condition applies.

Use the manufacturer’s VIN lookup or owner account

  1. Open the automaker’s official connected-services page or owner account. Look for service availability, vehicle compatibility, network sunset, or VIN-check information. Avoid relying on a general search result for a similar model; the result needs to apply to your vehicle.
  2. Enter the VIN or select the vehicle in the signed-in account. Confirm that the page identifies the correct car before interpreting its service list.
  3. Find the exact feature. Check whether the entry describes emergency calling, remote access, location, vehicle status, or another service you use. Do not assume that a general list of connected features shares one modem or one network dependency.
  4. Look for the network generation and region. The result should distinguish LTE/4G, 5G, or a 2G/3G dependency and should apply to the country where the car operates. Some manufacturer pages provide a VIN check without stating the generation; if yours does, move to direct support rather than guessing.
  5. Save the result and its scope. Note the VIN or configuration it covers, the country, the feature, and any conditions such as a software update, subscription, or end date. If the page is unclear, ask support to confirm those details in writing.

Škoda provides a VIN-check entry point on its 2G/3G Sunset page. Its guidance also shows why a VIN-specific answer matters: it says certain services—including Breakdown Call, Vehicle Health Report, Parking Position, and Vehicle Status—still rely on 2G/3G in some models, and recommends an available over-the-air software update before the network sunset for cars equipped to receive one. The page’s shutdown timing is for its European context, not a universal schedule.

Ask the automaker or dealer a precise question

If the lookup does not spell out the network, contact the automaker’s support team or an authorized dealer with the VIN. Ask about the individual feature, not just whether the vehicle is “4G.” Manufacturer guidance can depend on country, model, and equipment: Renault Group says it assesses impacts by brand, model, and country, while Porsche directs owners to customer service to identify affected vehicles.

A useful question is: “For VIN [enter VIN], does [name the feature] use LTE/4G, 5G, or 2G/3G in [country]? Does the answer depend on the vehicle’s trim, production date, or installed equipment? Is the service currently active, and is any update or retrofit required or available?” Provide the VIN directly to the manufacturer or dealer; do not publish it in a public forum.

Ask for separate answers to these points:

  • Network: Which generation does this feature use on this exact vehicle?
  • Configuration: Does the answer vary by market, trim, production date, or optional equipment?
  • Service status: Is the feature still supported and enabled, or has the service ended for another reason?
  • Required action: Is there a software update, account step, subscription, or vehicle-specific retrofit?
  • Timing: What is the relevant date for the vehicle’s country and carrier?

Renault Group’s 2G/3G shutdown information says connected services on Renault vehicles with easy link and openR link use 4G. It separately warns that some services, including eCall where provided over 2G/3G, may be affected. That distinction is important: a statement about one connected-service platform should not be generalized to every feature on every Renault vehicle.

When an in-car LTE indicator helps—and when it does not

Some vehicles display cellular information that can help confirm a connection, but only use it as a network check if the manufacturer documents that interpretation for your model. Tesla says an LTE label beside the connectivity icon indicates LTE capability when it appears with stable cellular connectivity. This is a Tesla-specific check, not a universal rule for other makes or vehicles.

An indicator may not answer whether a particular service uses the same cellular connection, whether the service is active, or whether it will remain supported in your region. If the indicator is absent, that alone does not establish that the car lacks an LTE modem; the display may be showing current connectivity rather than a complete equipment record. Confirm with the VIN-specific information or manufacturer support.

Tesla’s 3G Cellular Network Retirement guidance describes the affected group for the cited AT&T 3G retirement as Model S vehicles built before June 2015 without an LTE-capable modem or Infotainment Upgrade. It also describes an installed LTE modem upgrade for eligible vehicles. Owners should confirm current eligibility and terms with Tesla rather than assume that every older Model S is affected or eligible.

How to interpret the answer

If the exact feature is confirmed as LTE or 5G

That establishes the network generation identified for the feature and configuration—not that the feature is active or guaranteed to remain available indefinitely. Check account or subscription status, software requirements, and the automaker’s support notice separately. Ask whether a network or service change is planned in your country if continuity is important.

If the feature uses 2G or 3G

Ask when the relevant network is being retired where the car is used and what the manufacturer says will happen to that feature. Dates differ by country and operator, and one manufacturer’s schedule does not set the schedule for another. A software update may help some vehicles, but it is not a universal conversion method; confirm availability and installation requirements for the VIN.

If the lookup says only “connected” or “compatible”

Treat that as an incomplete network answer. It may establish that a service is available for the vehicle without naming the cellular generation. Ask support specifically about the network used by the feature and whether the answer covers your country and equipment configuration.

If the feature has already ended

Find out whether only the named connected function stopped or whether other services are affected. A cellular shutdown does not automatically mean the vehicle itself stops working, nor does it prove that every connected feature or offline function has ended. Toyota’s notice, for example, says built-in navigation continues on the vehicles covered even though specified connected services ended.

Škoda, 2G/3G Sunset Some services, including Breakdown Call, Vehicle Health Report, Parking Position, and Vehicle Status, still rely on 2G/3G in some models. Common checks that can mislead you

Assuming every service shares the same modem

A car’s navigation, emergency calling, app features, and remote controls may not have identical network dependencies. Ask about the feature by name. A general answer that the vehicle has LTE is less useful than confirmation that the exact service uses LTE in the relevant configuration.

Using only the model year

Model year can narrow the question, but it does not settle it. Ford says availability varies by year, model, and trim; Mercedes-Benz USA notes exceptions within its model-year guidance. Country, production date, trim, and installed equipment may also matter, so use the VIN as the starting point.

Confusing a subscription or service end with a network sunset

A service can stop because its provider ended the service or because an account or subscription is inactive; that is distinct from whether the vehicle has LTE hardware. Mercedes-Benz USA’s mbrace notice is a concrete example: it says the mbrace service ended January 1, 2026, separately from older guidance about which vehicles were affected by a 3G sunset. Ask which issue applies to the service you are investigating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating an aftermarket OBD device as proof of factory capability

A device plugged into the diagnostic port does not verify the factory modem or the automaker’s connected services. A Volkswagen technical announcement hosted by NHTSA describes Motion by Mojio as an OBD-port-connected service and distinguishes it from factory Volkswagen Car-Net services. The document is useful for understanding that distinction, not as evidence that an aftermarket device can test whether a factory feature uses LTE: Volkswagen 3G Sunset technical announcement (PDF).

Assuming the same shutdown date applies everywhere

Network retirement is geographically specific. Škoda’s page gives different staged dates within Europe, while Porsche’s linked guidance is for Switzerland. Confirm the local date with the carmaker and, when relevant, the cellular operator; do not apply a date from another country to your vehicle.

What to do after you confirm the network

  • For a supported LTE/5G feature: confirm it is active in the account and check for any required software update or subscription condition.
  • For a feature that still relies on 2G/3G: ask the manufacturer for the local end date, whether an update can change the dependency, and whether a retrofit is offered for your VIN.
  • For an unclear or conflicting result: contact official support with the VIN, country, feature name, and the wording of the page or display you saw. Request a vehicle-specific answer rather than extrapolating from another trim or model year.
  • For a service already discontinued: ask which functions ended and which remain, including offline features such as built-in navigation. A retrofit is not guaranteed; Toyota says none is available for the services covered in its 3G notice, whereas Tesla describes an LTE upgrade for a limited eligible group.
