To check whether an estate car will fit, compare the exact car’s length, body width, mirror-to-mirror width and height with the usable dimensions of your parking space or garage. In a garage, measure the entrance separately from the interior: a car can fit once inside yet be difficult to get through the door. Then allow practical room to manoeuvre, open the doors and access the boot.
1. Find dimensions for the exact estate car
“Estate car” is a body style, not a standard size. Dimensions vary by make, model, model year, generation, trim and fitted equipment. Use the manufacturer’s specifications or the owner’s manual for the version you are considering, and record these measurements:
- Overall length: compare this with the usable length of the space.
- Width excluding mirrors: the car’s body width, useful for checking the space between walls or other obstacles.
- Width including mirrors: important when checking a garage opening or other narrow access point.
- Height: check whether the published figure includes an antenna or roof rails, and account for any fitted equipment that adds height.
Check the measurement definitions rather than treating every published width as interchangeable. Ford’s UK owner-manual specifications, for example, distinguish width with and without exterior mirrors and note that figures can vary by version. Ford also says its online manual view may contain newer information than the printed manual, so consult the manual supplied with your particular car as well as the relevant Ford owner-manual information.
Examples show why the exact version matters. Ford lists a Focus Wagon excluding Active/ST at 4,671 mm long, 1,825 mm wide excluding mirrors and 1,979 mm wide including mirrors; its height including antenna is 1,494–1,499 mm. Ford’s Focus Wagon/Active specification instead lists a length of 4,693 mm and height including roof rails of 1,521–1,545 mm, with the same 1,979 mm mirror-inclusive width. Peugeot UK lists the 308 SW at 4,635 mm long and 1,850 mm wide excluding wing mirrors. That body-width figure alone does not establish whether it will clear a garage entrance. 2. Measure the usable space, not just its nominal size
For a garage
Measure the clear internal length and width at the level where the car will sit. Also measure the garage door’s clear opening width and height separately, including any lintel or other low point. A long tape measure or another suitably accurate measuring tool can help. Note anything that reduces usable space, such as shelves, pipes, columns, stored items or kerbs. Check the height where the vehicle’s highest fitted point will pass.
For an outdoor parking space
Measure the marked or otherwise usable boundaries, rather than assuming the space matches a standard drawing. Check for kerbs, posts, adjacent walls or other features that affect the space available to park or open a door.

3. Check the approach and entrance separately
Compare the car’s mirror-inclusive width and height with the garage opening, not just with the interior dimensions. A vehicle may fit between the garage walls once parked but be awkward or impossible to drive through a narrower opening. Consider the space needed to line up with the entrance and turn into it, too. Where mirror clearance is tight, check the vehicle’s actual mirror position and whether the mirrors can be folded safely; do not assume the folded width is the same as the published width.
If the approach is constrained, a simple dimension comparison cannot establish that the manoeuvre will be straightforward. Assess the actual route and alignment before relying on a close fit.

4. Decide whether the fit is practical
A car that can technically be parked in a space may still leave too little room for everyday use. After comparing the vehicle and space dimensions, consider whether you can get in and out, open the doors, walk past the car, reach the boot and use any garage storage or doors as needed. Havant Borough Council’s residential parking guidance says space should also be provided for car doors to open and for boot or garage-door access.

Local planning guidance can offer a rough point of comparison, but it does not certify that a particular vehicle will fit comfortably in an existing garage or parking bay. Epsom and Ewell Borough Council planning material surfaced in 2025 lists 2.4 m × 4.8 m as a minimum reference size for a car parking space and 3 m × 6 m internally for a single garage or car port. Havant Borough Council guidance also gives 2.4 m × 4.8 m for an individual parking space and 3 m × 6 m internally for a single garage or car port. These are figures from those councils’ guidance, not universal requirements for every location or building.

Canterbury City Council’s 2022 housing garage strategy describes an approximate medium garage as 5,400 mm long × 2,700 mm wide. Its illustrative comparison uses an estate-car reference of 4,710 mm long × 1,830 mm wide, leaving arithmetic differences of 690 mm in length and 870 mm in width. The strategy warns that garage-door openings can be narrower than the structure and that drivers may have little room to enter or exit. These approximate local comparison figures are not a guarantee for any specific car or a current national average.

Measurement checklist
- Identify the car’s make, model, model year or generation, trim and relevant fitted equipment.
- Record the manufacturer’s overall length, width excluding mirrors, width including mirrors and height, checking what each figure includes.
- Measure the space’s clear usable length and width, noting obstacles.
- For a garage, measure the clear entrance width and height, including low points, separately from the interior.
- Compare the car and space in the same units, then assess the approach, turning room, door access and boot access.
